Comparative morphological study of the lingual papillae and their connective tissue cores of the koala.

The stereo structure of each lingual papilla of the koala has a similar structure to that of various other animal species: the koala has a lingual prominence (intermolar prominence) with larger filiform papillae. (A lingual prominence is a characteristic in herbivorous animals.) The external form and connective tissue core (CTC) of the filiform papillae of koalas consist of one large main process and several smaller accessory processes. (These are similar to carnivorous animals.) Fungiform CTC have a thick dome-like structure, with several taste buds on the top. There are three vallate papilla

Extraneural organ involvement in human rabies.

Human rabies is a fatal encephalomyelitis. After the development of the central nervous system infection, there is centrifugal spread of the rabies virus to extraneural (systemic) organs. With histochemical staining and localization of rabies virus antigen (RVA) with immunoperoxidase staining, we have examined tissue sections of organs from 14 postmortem pediatric and adult cases of human rabies acquired in Mexico and the People's Republic of China. RVA was found in nerve plexuses in multiple organs, including the gastrointestinal tract. RVA was observed in muscle fibers of the heart, tongue,

Chemoreception in crocodilians: anatomy, natural history, and empirical results.

Anatomical and behavioral aspects of chemoreception in crocodilians are reviewed. Extant crocodilians possess valvular nostrils regulated by smooth muscles; paired nasal cavities, each with three conchae; and flaps closing the rear of the buccopharyngeal passage to channel inspired air through the nasopharyngeal duct. Olfaction is enhanced by gular pumping, whereby the floor of the pharynx is alternately lowered and raised to pulse air through the nasal cavity. Taste buds occur on the tongue, palate, and pharyngeal walls. Crocodilians in nature or in semi-natural enclosures locate distant carr

Structure of the soft palate and composition of the oral mucous membrane in monkeys.

The soft palate of monkeys (M. irus, mulatta, fasciculata; 2.3 +/- 0.4 kg in weight) was studied morphologically and stereologically. After fixation by perfusion, the tissue was disected free, divided in halves and the halves into 5 segments each, and processed for light, transmission- and scanning electron microscopy. Morphometric techniques and a newly developed computer program for automatic data processing (Mumana) were employed in order to estimate, at the light microscopic level, the volumetric composition of the oral soft palate mucosa. The latter showed a different composition in anter

Patients with hypogeusia show changes in expression of T2R taste receptor genes in their tongues.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Taste receptor genes associated with bitterness belong to the T2R gene family. In this study, we compared the expression of genes of the T2R family in the tongues of patients with hypogeusia to those in healthy subjects and examined the possibility that T2R genes are involved in the pathogenesis of hypogeusia. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical and basic study. METHODS: The control group consisted of 24 healthy people. The patient group consisted of 40 subjects with hypogeusia who were confirmed to have abnormally elevated taste thresholds including that of bitter tast

Processing-induced changes in sensory quality, anthocyanins and non-volatile metabolites of bud green tea from the purple-leaf cultivar 'Zijuan'.

We investigated how processing modulates bud green tea quality in the purple-leaf cultivar 'Zijuan' using sensory evaluation with targeted and untargeted metabolomics. Liquor color shifted from pale yellow-green to purplish yellow by final drying (JFT), while taste profiling indicated a fuller body and reduced bitterness. These changes paralleled the chemistry, with total polyphenols and pigments declining during heating, galloyl hydrolysis increasing gallic acid and implying reduced catechin galloylation, and several free amino acids peaking around fixation. Untargeted metabolomics identified

Calcitonin-gene-related-peptide-immunoreactive innervation of the rat head with emphasis on specialized sensory structures.

The distribution of calcitonin-gene-related peptide-like immunoreactivity (CGRP-IR) was studied in sections of decalcified rat head and selected whole-mount preparations in order to address the complex peptidergic innervation patterns in peripheral cephalic specialized zones and to examine neuronal ganglia in situ. Labeled neuron somata in trigeminal, glossopharyngeal, and vagal ganglia comprised a large proportion of small to medium size type B ganglion cells. Parasympathetic ganglia (ciliary, otic, sphenopalatine, submandibular) revealed a small population of labeled somata and numerous peri

Neutrophil responses are substantially prolonged and robust following early postnatal chorda tympani or lingual nerve transection.

While the mature gustatory and trigeminal systems are capable of regeneration following surgical nerve transection, transections occurring early in life result in permanent effects on innervated tissues. Converging evidence suggests that facilitators of the innate immune response, such as neutrophils, may contribute to these developmental differences in injury recovery. In the current study, Sprague-Dawley rats underwent transection of the trigeminal lingual nerve (LX) or gustatory chorda tympani nerve (CTX) at either 10, 25, or 65 days of age. Tongues were extracted 12, 24, or 48 h post-surge

Purinergic Signaling in Swallowing Reflex Initiation: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Implications for Oropharyngeal Dysphagia-A Narrative Review.

The swallowing reflex is a highly coordinated process that is essential for safe bolus transit and airway protection. Although its neurophysiological framework has been extensively studied, the molecular mechanisms underlying reflex initiation remain incompletely understood, limiting targeted therapies for oropharyngeal dysphagia. Recent evidence implicates purinergic signaling as a key mediator of swallowing initiation, particularly through ATP release from taste buds and neuroendocrine cells in the hypopharyngeal and laryngeal mucosa. Experimental studies in mice demonstrate that water, acid

Organoid in dentistry: Models for oral biology and disease.

Cell lines and animal models have long been used as essential tools in studies targeting the oral cavity, offering valuable insights into various oral diseases. Each of these research models provides its advantages, such as ease of manipulation in cell lines and the ability to replicate whole-organ interactions in animal models. However, conventional models often have limited native phenotypic features, which do not fully capture the complexity of the human oral cavity. In response to these limitations, organoid technologies have recently been developed and emerged as a promising alternative.

Detailed morphological study of the tongue of forest dragon (Gonocephalus chamaeleontinus) by scanning electron and light microscopy.

BACKGROUND: The forest dragon (Gonocephalus chamaeleontinus) is a reptile of the Agamidae family, and its distribution includes Indonesia and Malaysia. The forest dragon uses its tongue to catch insects and invertebrates. In terms of morphology, the tongue of the Agamidae family is different from other reptiles. The study of morphology in the tongues of Agamidae is crucial for understanding their feeding behavior, prey capture mechanisms, and evolutionary relationships. AIM: This research attempts to analyze the morphology of the dorsal surface of the tongue of G. chamaeleontinus by using the

Distinct and Overlapping Expression Patterns of the Homer Family of Scaffolding Proteins and Their Encoding Genes in Developing Murine Cephalic Tissues.

In mammals Homer1, Homer2 and Homer3 constitute a family of scaffolding proteins with key roles in Ca2+ signaling and Ca2+ transport. In rodents, Homer proteins and mRNAs have been shown to be expressed in various postnatal tissues and to be enriched in brain. However, whether the Homers are expressed in developing tissues is hitherto largely unknown. In this work, we used immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization to analyze the expression patterns of Homer1, Homer2 and Homer3 in developing cephalic structures. Our study revealed that the three Homer proteins and their encoding genes are

CALHM1-Mediated ATP Release and Ciliary Beat Frequency Modulation in Nasal Epithelial Cells.

Mechanical stimulation of airway epithelial cells causes apical release of ATP, which increases ciliary beat frequency (CBF) and speeds up mucociliary clearance. The mechanisms responsible for this ATP release are poorly understood. CALHM1, a transmembrane protein with shared structural features to connexins and pannexins, has been implicated in ATP release from taste buds, but it has not been evaluated for a functional role in the airway. In the present study, Calhm1 knockout, Panx1 knockout, and wild-type mouse nasal septal epithelial cells were grown at an air-liquid interface (ALI) and sub

Histomorphological Description of the Digestive System of Pebbly Fish, Alestes baremoze (Joannis, 1835).

Histomorphological studies of the digestive system of Alestes baremoze captured from Lake Albert, Uganda, were done using standard procedures. These revealed that A. baremoze has a fleshy-lipped terminal small mouth, large molar, short oesophagus, a three-lobed liver, pouch-like stomach, a nine-fingered caeca, and a long tubular intestine. A stratified squamous epithelium with numerous mucus-secreting cells lined the lips with no taste buds. Stratified squamous epithelia lined the oesophagus in the anterior portion which turned into a columnar epithelium towards the stomach. The lamina propria

Calcium-activated potassium channel SK1 is widely expressed in the peripheral nervous system and sensory organs of adult zebrafish.

Sensory cells contain ion channels involved in the organ-specific transduction mechanisms that convert different types of stimuli into electric energy. Here we focus on small-conductance calcium-activated potassium channel 1 (SK1) which plays an important role in all excitable cells acting as feedback regulators in after-hyperpolarization. This study was undertaken to analyze the pattern of expression of SK1 in the zebrafish peripheral nervous system and sensory organs using RT-PRC, Westernblot and immunohistochemistry. Expression of SK1 mRNA was observed at all developmental stages analyzed (
