Effect of calcium in model plaque on the anticaries activity of fluoride in vitro.

The uptake of calcium by a polysaccharide (agarose) gel used as a model for plaque from a two-step treatment (consisting of a calcium rinse followed by a fluoride treatment) and the effect of the deposited calcium in model plaque on caries lesion formation in enamel were determined. Calcium uptake was measured by treatment of the model plaques with [45Ca]-CaCl2 solutions with or without NaF. A two-step treatment consisting of calcium followed by fluoride produced a 100% increase in calcium content of model plaque, presumably due to the formation of CaF2, compared with a treatment with artifici

Size-controllable synthesis of hydroxyapatite nanorods via fluorine modulation: applications in dental adhesives for enhanced enamel remineralization.

BACKGROUND: There has been little application of fluorine-substituted hydroxyapatites (FHAs) in dental adhesives. Previous studies primarily focused on the effect of fluoride content on enamel remineralization, neglecting the role of FHA particle size. This study aimed to synthesize uniform FHA nanorods of varying sizes by adjusting the fluorine doping levels, and to investigate the synergistic effects of the fluorine content and nanorod size on enamel remineralization by incorporating the FHA nanorods into adhesives. METHODS: FHA nanorods with varying fluorine doping levels and sizes were sy

In vivo remineralization by a monofluorophosphate dentifrice as determined with a thin-section sandwich method.

Artificial caries lesions were formed in thin sections of subsurface enamel sandwiched between protective sheets of plastic. Six lesions were placed into the buccal surfaces of lower partial dentures of seven subjects, covered with a stainless steel mesh to provide a plaque cover, and brushed with either a sodium monofluorophosphate or placebo dentifrice for four weeks, by means of a double-blind random cross-over design. Analysis of the lesions by quantitative microradiography revealed that significant remineralization (21%) occurred in the monofluorophosphate group and significant further de

Influence of 8DSS peptide on nano-mechanical behavior of human enamel.

Aspartate-serine-serine (DSS) repeats are abundant in naturally occurring proteins that are critical for tooth formation. We recently developed octuplet repeats of aspartate-serine-serine (8DSS) peptides to promote the nucleation of calcium phosphate carbonate from free ions. In this paper, we report a possible role of 8DSS in promoting mineral deposition onto human enamel. Human enamel specimens were demineralized, exposed briefly to 8DSS solution, and then exposed to simulated body fluid that favors mineral deposition. At various stages of treatment, nano-mechanical behaviors, namely, hardne

Comparative Evaluation of Longevity of Fluoride Release from Three Different Fluoride Varnishes: An Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: The cycles of demineralization and remineralization result in a dynamic process of caries development. Caries are prevented by the shift in the balance from demineralization to remineralization at the tooth-oral fluid interface with the help of salivary fluoride levels (in parts per million). The advantages of fluoride varnish application over other substitutes like dentifrices, mouthrinses, gels, or foams are that varnishes are well tolerated by infants, young children, or children with special healthcare needs and have prolonged therapeutic effects. This study was formulated to

The effectiveness of Bio-Min toothpaste in the management of white spot lesions: a randomised control trial.

BACKGROUND: White spot lesions (WSL) are common side effects of orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances, in which the surface layer of enamel is demineralised. Thus, remineralisation, that is a partial or complete reversal, of these lesions can occur as they affect the surface enamel. Remineralisation with low-dose fluoride, in addition to optimal oral hygiene and diet, has been recommended to manage WSL. The aim of the planned trial is to assess the effectiveness of a fluoride-containing bioactive glass toothpaste (BioMin™) in its ability to remineralise post-orthodontic demineralised WSL
