Japanese encephalitis (JE) part II: 14 years' follow-up of survivors.

Japanese encephalitis, the commonest Arbovirus encephalitis, has been endemic in many parts of Asia, the Pacific Islands, and India; also, there have been many epidemics. Most of the post JE cases have been associated with neurological and neuropsychiatric deficits but have not been properly classified and followed. Practically all the previous studies were in children or young adults. The aim of this study, involving only adult cases, the largest ever being reported, has been to follow the 688/1,199 survivors of JE patients out of 1,282 of acute cases admitted during four epidemics for a peri

Surgical results and complications in a series of 71 consecutive cervical spondylotic corpectomies.

BACKGROUND: Cervical corpectomy is a common procedure in spondylosis. It is normally a well-tolerated surgery and clinical improvement is widely described. However, it is associated with potential risky complications (subsidence, clinical deterioration, vertebral artery injury...); thus, a judicious surgical indication and a good technique are required. METHODS: We revised retrospectively the clinical evolution and complications of 71 spondylotic corpectomies in a series of 100 consecutive patients operated on due to different ethiological causes from January 2001 to September 2007 at our hos

Detection of Pathological Voice Using Cepstrum Vectors: A Deep Learning Approach.

OBJECTIVES: Computerized detection of voice disorders has attracted considerable academic and clinical interest in the hope of providing an effective screening method for voice diseases before endoscopic confirmation. This study proposes a deep-learning-based approach to detect pathological voice and examines its performance and utility compared with other automatic classification algorithms. METHODS: This study retrospectively collected 60 normal voice samples and 402 pathological voice samples of 8 common clinical voice disorders in a voice clinic of a tertiary teaching hospital. We extract

Simultaneous High-Speed Video Laryngoscopy and Acoustic Aerodynamic Recordings during Vocal Onset of Variable Sound Pressure Level: A Preliminary Study.

UNLABELLED: Voicing: requires frequent starts and stops at various sound pressure levels (SPL) and frequencies. Prior investigations using rigid laryngoscopy with oral endoscopy have shown variations in the duration of the vibration delay between normal and abnormal subjects. However, these studies were not physiological because the larynx was viewed using rigid endoscopes. We adapted a method to perform to perform simultaneous high-speed naso-endoscopic video while simultaneously acquiring the sound pressure, fundamental frequency, airflow rate, and subglottic pressure. This study aimed to in

What are the Symptoms that Characterize the Clinical Condition of Vocal Fatigue? A Scoping Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Vocal fatigue is a clinical manifestation associated with a perception of negative vocal adjustment. It is related to the increase in the sensation of excessive effort when speaking and the lack of conditioning of the muscles and structures that involve vocal production. Because it has a complex and multifactorial diagnosis, there is still no consensus on the symptoms most commonly found in this clinical condition. OBJECTIVE: To review and analyze the symptoms that characterize the clinical condition of vocal fatigue. METHODS: This study consists of a scoping review carried out

Management of patients with cervical myelopathy and normal pressure hydrocephalus: Epidemiology, medical and surgical complications.

OBJECTIVE: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) can each lead to gait dysfunction and urinary incontinence and may occur concurrently in some patients. In patients presenting with NPH and DCM, there is a paucity of literature describing the medical and surgical complications of treatment and the potential consequences of the sequence of surgical procedures. The aim of this study is to evaluate patients with DCM, NPH, and dual pathology to determine epidemiology and how the order of surgical intervention for both conditions may impact complications and

Effect of Vitamin B12 Injection on the Vocal Performance of Professional Singers: A Randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-Controlled, Crossover Trial.

IMPORTANCE: One-third of singers and vocal professionals report experiencing a benefit from empirical vitamin B12 injections for improvement of mild singing-related symptoms (eg, reduced stamina, vocal fatigue, and effort). However, there is no objective evidence to support or refute these claims. OBJECTIVE: To assess the presence and magnitude of the effect of empirical vitamin B12 injection on the vocal performance of singers. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial was conducted from November 7, 2017, to November 30, 2018, at an a

Homologous collagen substances for vocal fold augmentation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Dysphonia resulting from failure of glottic closure during voicing is a difficult clinical problem. Recently developed homologous collagen compounds may be beneficial in treating this problem. The objectives of this thesis are to: 1) evaluate the potential site(s) of collagen graft placement in the human vocal fold, quantify the amount of graft material that can be injected into these sites, and determine how these sites are accessed by the currently available surgical tools for injection; 2) determine the effects of the superficial vocal fold implant on laryngeal vibrat

Treatment of autonomous thyroid nodules: value of percutaneous ethanol injection.

OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous injection of alcohol was recently proposed as an alternative to surgical and radioiodine treatments of autonomous thyroid nodules. The purpose of this study was to determine the value of this procedure and to define its limitations and indications when used for this purpose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-one patients with autonomous thyroid nodules underwent a cycle of treatment with percutaneous injection of ethanol in multiple sessions (three to seven) on alternate days depending on the diffusion of the ethanol in the nodule. Fifteen patients were hyperthyroid, and 1

KMT2B-related disorders: expansion of the phenotypic spectrum and long-term efficacy of deep brain stimulation.

Heterozygous mutations in KMT2B are associated with an early-onset, progressive and often complex dystonia (DYT28). Key characteristics of typical disease include focal motor features at disease presentation, evolving through a caudocranial pattern into generalized dystonia, with prominent oromandibular, laryngeal and cervical involvement. Although KMT2B-related disease is emerging as one of the most common causes of early-onset genetic dystonia, much remains to be understood about the full spectrum of the disease. We describe a cohort of 53 patients with KMT2B mutations, with detailed delinea

Prolonged impairment of deglutition in supratentorial ischaemic stroke: the predictive value of Parramatta Hospitals' Assessment of Dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Up to 50% of ischaemic stroke patients show initial dysphagia, which may persist for months. Guidelines recommend switching nasogastric (NG) to percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube feeding at the second week after the stroke if impaired deglutition is expected for another 4 weeks. Precise prognostic criteria are lacking. We hypothesised that the Parramatta Hospitals' Assessment of Dysphagia (PAHD) performed 8 to 10 days after the stroke predicts impaired deglutition for another 4 weeks. METHODS: After a first dysphagia assessment (buccolingual motor function, liquid and

Postoperative laryngeal symptoms in a general surgery setting. Clinical study.

INTRODUCTION: Vocal cord injuries (VI), postoperative hoarseness (PH), dysphonia (DN), dysphagia (DG) and sore throat (ST) are common complications after general anesthesia; there is actually a lack of consensus to support the proper timing for post-operative laryngoscopy that is reliable to support the diagnosis of laryngeal or vocal fold lesions after surgery and there are no valid studies about the entity of laryngeal trauma in oro-tracheal intubation. Aim of our study is to evaluate the statistical relation between anatomic, anesthesiological and surgical variables in the case of PH, DG or

Optimal Acoustic Parameter Subsets for Dimension-Specific Voice Quality Prediction.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the minimal set of acoustic parameters that optimally predicts each major perceptual voice quality dimension and to quantify the redundancy among commonly measured acoustic voice parameters. STUDY DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a publicly available voice database. METHODS: Fourteen acoustic parameters were extracted from sustained vowels of 284 speakers in the Perceptual Voice Qualities Database (PVQD). Four right-skewed parameters (jitter, shimmer, shimmer dB, and period standard deviation) were log-transformed to linearize their relationship with perceptual ratings.
