Methadone-fluconazole formulations provide superior clinical efficacy compared to buprenorphine injection in dogs undergoing soft tissue surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the perioperative efficacy and safety of methadone-fluconazole injection followed by oral methadone-fluconazole-naltrexone (methadone-fluconazole) compared to IM buprenorphine followed by oral codeine (buprenorphine). METHODS: Healthy dogs undergoing elective ovariohysterectomy or castration from October 2019 through December 2019 were blocked to treatment by week. The methadone-fluconazole group treatment included methadone-fluconazole (0.5 and 2.5 mg/kg, SC) preoperatively and once postoperatively; methadone-fluconazole-naltrexone (0.5, 2.5, and 0.125 mg/kg, PO, q 12

Perioperative anaesthetic complications in healthy cats undergoing anaesthesia for neutering in first opinion practice.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to identify the incidence of common perioperative anaesthetic complications in cats undergoing anaesthesia for neutering in three UK first opinion practices. METHODS: A retrospective anaesthetic record analysis was performed on cats anaesthetised for neutering at practices 1 and 2 between 9 December 2017 and 2 February 2021 and practice 3 between 9 March 2020 and 7 January 2021. A search of the practice management system identified all cats that had undergone neutering in the selected timeframe. Data from 1019 cats were included in the study. Infor

Comparison of hemodynamic effects of propofol or alfaxalone during induction in dogs.

This randomized prospective clinical study aimed to compare the hemodynamic effects of propofol and alfaxalone for the induction of anesthesia in dogs. Thirty-one healthy dogs undergoing various procedures in a private referral center were premedicated with intramuscular acepromazine (0.015 mg/kg) and methadone (0.15 mg/kg). They then received 5 mg/kg of propofol over 30 s for induction, followed by a maintenance dose of 25 mg/kg/h (Group P), or 2 mg/kg of alfaxalone over 30 s for induction, followed by a continuous rate infusion of 10 mg/kg/h (Group A). Heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure

A multidisciplinary study of pain in cats undergoing dental extractions: A prospective, blinded, clinical trial.

This study aimed to evaluate pain scores, analgesic requirements, food intake and serum inflammatory cytokines in cats before and after clinically recommended dental treatment. Twenty-four cats were included in a prospective, blinded clinical trial. Cats were equally divided into minimal (minimal dental treatment) or severe (multiple dental extractions) oral disease groups. They were admitted (day 0) and underwent oral examination/radiographs/treatment under general anesthesia (day 1; acepromazine-hydromorphone-propofol-isoflurane-meloxicam-local anesthetic blocks). Serum inflammatory cytokine

Effect of predosing versus slow administration of propofol on the dose required for anaesthetic induction and on physiologic variables in healthy dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of the timing of propofol administration on the dose required for induction of anaesthesia and commonly measured physiological effects. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized, investigator-blinded clinical study. ANIMALS: A group of 32 healthy dogs aged 6-144 months and weighing 3.5-47.2 kg. METHODS: Premedication was intramuscular acepromazine (0.025 mg kg-1) and methadone (0.25 mg kg-1). After 30 minutes, one of three treatments was administered to the dogs: propofol (0.5 mg kg-1; group PP), an equivalent volume of saline (group CP) or a propofol infusion (1.3 mg k

Fatalities within seven days after equine standing sedation: A prospective, multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: Information regarding mortality associated with standing procedures in horses is sparse. OBJECTIVES: To report data from >12,000 standing sedations. STUDY DESIGN: Confidential, observational, prospective, multicentre, cohort study. METHODS: We collected records of horses/ponies undergoing standing sedation for surgery or advanced diagnostic imaging using at least one top-up or controlled rate infusion (CRI). Procedures were either NON-COLIC or COLIC. Outcome at seven days was recorded as (i) ALIVE, (ii) EUTHANASIA or (iii) DEAD. Data were collected with a portable document forma

Comparison of Detomidine or Romifidine in Combination with Morphine for Standing Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Horses.

The aim of this study was to determine the most appropriate sedation protocol for a standing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination in horses, comparing continuous rate infusions (CRIs) of detomidine and romifidine combined with a single bolus of morphine. Sixteen horses referred for standing low-field open-magnet MRI were randomly assigned to one of two sedation protocols. The horses were premedicated with 0.03 mg/kg of intramuscular acepromazine, and those animals belonging to Group D received an intravenous (IV) loading dose of detomidine (0.01 mg/kg) 30 min later, while those of Grou

Heated intravenous fluids alone fail to prevent hypothermia in cats under general anaesthesia.

Objectives The objective was to evaluate the clinical efficiacy of a constant rate infusion of heated fluid as the sole means of preventing intraoperative hypothermia in cats. Methods This randomised, prospective, clinical study was conducted at a university teaching veterinary hospital. Female cats (American Society of Anesthesiologists [ASA] grade I) undergoing elective surgery by laparotomy under general anaesthesia (acepromazine 0.05 mg/kg SC; morphine 0.2 mg/kg IV; propofol IV titrated, isoflurane 2% in 100% oxygen) were randomised in two groups. Both groups were infused with fluid (NaCl

All the sloths were in good condition with a body weight > 2 kg, and were anesthetized for a variety of minor clinical procedures. Intramuscular anesthetic combinations included 0.1 mg/kg acepromazine + 10 mg/kg ketamine (A/K, n = 30), 1 mg/kg xylazine + 10 mg/kg ketamine (X/K, n = 89), 10 mg/kg tiletamine/zolazepam (T/Z, n = 37), and 0.04 mg/kg medetomidine + 3 mg/kg ketamine (M/K, n = 46) antagonized by 0.2 mg/kg atipamezole. The effects of nitrous oxide on recovery from isoflurane anaesthesia in dogs.

OBJECTIVES: To assess rate and quality of recovery from anaesthesia where isoflurane was delivered in oxygen or oxygen/nitrous oxide. METHODS: Dogs anaesthetised with propofol were randomly allocated to receive isoflurane maintenance in either 100 per cent oxygen (group 1) or 66 per cent nitrous oxide (N(2)O)/34 per cent oxygen (group 2). Time from end of anaesthesia to achieving sternal recumbency was recorded. Incidence of adverse behaviours (vocalisation, uncontrolled head movement and restlessness) were assessed.
