Spatial neglect, Balint-Homes' and Gerstmann's syndrome, and other spatial disorders.

Brain-damaged patients with lesion or dysfunction involving the parietal cortex may show a variety of neuropsychological impairments involving spatial cognition. The more frequent and disabling deficit is the syndrome of unilateral spatial neglect that, in a nutshell, consists in a bias of spatial representation and attention ipsilateral to of extrapersonal, personal (ie, the body) space, or both, toward the side of the hemispheric lesion. The deficit is more frequent and severe after damage to the right hemisphere, involving particularly the posterior-inferior parietal cortex at the temporo-p

Intact verbal description of letters with diminished awareness of their forms.

Visual processing and its conscious awareness can be dissociated. To examine the extent of dissociation between ability to read characters or words and to be consciously aware of their forms, reading ability and conscious awareness for characters were examined using a tachistoscope in an alexic patient. A right handed woman with 14 years of education presented with incomplete right hemianopia, alexia with kanji (ideogram) agraphia, anomia, and amnesia. Brain MRI disclosed cerebral infarction limited to the left lower bank of the calcarine fissure, lingual and parahippocampal gyri, and an old i

[Cerebrovascular disorder and the language areas].

Recent progress of imaging techniques has achieved precise descriptions of aphasic syndromes associated with cerebrovascular disorders. Infarction of the left anterior cerebral artery brings about transcortical motor aphasia. Occlusion of each branches of the left middle cerebral artery produces characteristic language symptoms. Recently, cases with infarction of the areas of prefrontal and precentral arteries were reported to manifest fluent aphasia indistinguishable from the classical transcortical sensory aphasia. Rare cases with lesions restricted to the Broca's area (territory of the prec

Postoperative Writing Impairment in Glioma Patients Undergoing Awake Craniotomy.

OBJECTIVE: Awake craniotomy is increasingly used as the criterion standard for glioma resection in the perisylvian region to preserve language function. Perioperative language assessment of patients with glioma who underwent awake surgery was conducted to examine the characteristics of language impairment, including written language. METHODS: The present study retrospectively analyzed cases of glioma involving language areas in patients who underwent awake craniotomy between April 2021 and December 2024. Background of the patients, surgical outcomes, and perioperative Japanese language functi

Motor functions of higher education students with dysgraphia.

This study examines the motor skills and motor-related daily functions of higher education students with and without dysgraphia, and their contribution in predicting handwriting performance. The sample included 82 higher education students aged 20-35 years old. Thirty-four were students without any known developmental disorder (NDD) and 48 students had dysgraphia. We individually administered a test battery evaluating handwriting performance, fine-motor skills, and visual-motor spatial-organization skills. Students also filled out a questionnaire relating to their fine- and gross-motor-related

Characteristics of dyslexia and dysgraphia in a Chinese patient with semantic dementia.

We describe a 44-year-old Chinese-speaking patient with semantic dementia (SD), who demonstrates dyslexia and dysgraphia. The man was administered a series of neuropsychological inspections, including general language tests and reading and writing examinations. The patient demonstrated surface dyslexia when reading single Chinese characters aloud. While most writing errors demonstrated by the patient were orthographically similar errors and noncharacter responses, such as pictograph, logographeme, and stroke errors, rather than phonologically plausible errors that were homophonous or different

Screening for motor dysgraphia in public schools.

OBJECTIVE: To screen for warning signs of dysgraphia in schoolchildren at the sixth grade of elementary school. METHOD: This was a descriptive, exploratory, cross-sectional cohort study performed with 630 schoolchildren assessed through the (adapted) Analytical Dysgraphia Inventory, which recognizes difficulties in writing through the tracing the graphics. RESULTS: A total of 22% (n=138) of the sample presented all indications of dysgraphia; the most prevalent indicator was ascending/descending/fluctuating lines (53.6%). When the indicators were correlated to gender, males showed a significa

Treatment of irregular word spelling in acquired dysgraphia: selective benefit from visual mnemonics.

In contrast to the numerous treatment studies of spoken language deficits, there have been relatively few studies concerned with the treatment of spelling disorders. Among these, there have been only a small number that have targeted specific components of the spelling process. We describe a successful single case treatment study for FME, a woman with acquired dysgraphia, which was conducted within a cognitive neuropsychological framework. Pre-treatment assessment revealed a semantic deficit, impaired access to output orthography and probable additional degradation of the actual representation

Jargonagraphia with severe aphasia due to a right hemisphere lesion: case report.

The authors report a case of a patient who developed jargonagraphia, severe aphasia, unilateral spatial neglect and apraxia due to a right hemisphere lesion. Jargonagraphia with severe aphasia, unilateral spatial neglect and apraxia is quite rare. The mechanisms of jargonagraphia remain unknown. A possible mechanism underlying this case of jargonagraphia is discussed.

Adult outcomes of verbal learning disability.

Although it is currently generally accepted that, in most cases, verbal learning disability (VLD) can persist into adulthood, adult outcomes of learning disability are still under much discussion. The adult outcomes of two types of VLD (dyslexia and dysgraphia) will be the focus of this article. The defining characteristics of VLD and what constitutes these types of VLD are provided in detail elsewhere in this issue (see Jones and Eberling). This article will focus on the current epidemiology, possible causative factors, neurocognitive profiles, and neurological correlates of such disability.

Instrument for locating students with suspected learning disabilities: a quantitative approach.

The instrument to locate students with learning disabilities was developed to create equality and uniformity, so that such difficulties could be spotted independently of socialization factors, teachers and parents to whom the student had been exposed. The instrument was developed on the basis of research that defines the reading rate of students with reading disabilities in words per minute, the minimum number of errors for locating writing disabilities, and the number of answers and lines a student uses to reconstruct the content of a passage adapted to his or her age level. The research carr

[Current status of aphasia therapy].

Aphasia therapy in adults has been established to a larger extent relatively lately in the history of aphasiology, i.e. after its social medical importance had been realized and one of the cardinal problems of neurology solved more satisfactorily--lesion localization by imaging techniques. In order to evaluate the efficiency of aphasia therapy--which is still not quite uncontradicted--it was necessary to acquire sufficient knowledge of the spontaneous recovery process. It takes place--e.g. after stroke--mainly during the first 3 months, coming, as a rule, to a halt during the first year. Longe

Recognition of Japanese kanji words in children with specific learning disorders: a preliminary study using magnetoencephalography.

INTRODUCTION: In Western countries, reading disorders are believed to be caused by phonological processing problems. Conversely, Japanese children with developmental dyslexia (DD) and developmental dysgraphia often have difficulty learning kanji that are ideographic characters. It is believed that kanji learning and alphabet learning have different pathologies, as the latter uses phonetic character. In this study, we aimed to clarify the characteristics of kanji word recognition in Japanese children with DD and developmental dysgraphia using magnetoencephalography with high spatial resolution.

Does surface dyslexia/dysgraphia relate to semantic deficits in the semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia?

The semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (sv-PPA) is a degenerative condition which causes surface dyslexia/dysgraphia, resulting in reading/writing errors of irregular words with non-transparent grapheme-to-phoneme correspondences (e.g., 'plaid') as opposed to regular words (e.g., 'cat'). According to connectionist models, most authors have attributed this deficit to semantic impairments, but this assumption is at odds with symbolic models, such as the DRC account, stating that the reading/writing of irregulars relies on the mental lexicon. Our study investigated whether sv-PPA aff

Is descriptive writing useful in the differential diagnosis of logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia, Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment?

Current classification of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) encompasses three variants: non-fluent (nfvPPA), semantic (svPPA) and logopenic (lvPPA). Previously lvPPA was regarded as aphasic form of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, not all patients with lvPPA phenotype present with AD pathology. Despite abundant literature on differentiation of lvPPA from svPPA and nfvPPA, studies comparing lvPPA with AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are scarce. This study aimed at analyzing written descriptive output in lvPPA, AD and MCI. Thirty-five patients participated in the study: 9 with lvPPA, 13

Pure somaesthetic alexia: somaesthetic-verbal disconnection for letters.

We studied a patient who manifested a bilateral reading disorder through the somaesthetic modality, without deficit of elementary tactile sensation or tactile object naming, due to a left parietal infarct. Detailed investigation established the following points. (i) The patient showed normal function on elementary somaesthetic examination, normal function on high level tactile perception, except for minimal impairment of the right hand on the two-point discrimination test, and normal latencies on the somatosensory evoked potential in both hands. (ii) The patient had difficulty in reading lette

Left and right corticobasal syndrome: comparison of cognitive profiles between metabolic imaging - matched groups.

BACKGROUND: Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) is typically asymmetric. Case reports suggest that left-hemisphere CBS (lhCBS) is associated with major language impairment, and right-hemisphere CBS (rhCBS) is associated with major visuospatial deficits, but no group study has ever verified these observations. In our study, we enrolled 49 patients with CBS, classified them as lhCBS or rhCBS based on asymmetry of hypometabolism on brain FDG-PET and compared their cognitive and behavioural profiles. METHODS: We defined asymmetry of hypometabolism upon visual inspection of qualitative PET images and conf
