The development of drug-resistant bacteria and the necessity for unique antimicrobial agents, directed to the search of new habitats to screen the production of anti-infective substances. Culture-dependent studies of heterotrophic bacteria from the intertidal macroalgae thriving along the Southern coast of India resulted in the isolation of 148 strains, which were assayed for antibacterial activities against wide spectrum of pathogens including drug-resistant pathogens, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE). Two of the most acti

Olfactory function is a key sense for human well-being and health, with olfactory dysfunction having been linked to serious diseases. As the microbiome is involved in normal olfactory epithelium development, we explored the relationship between olfactory function (odor threshold, discrimination, identification) and nasal microbiome in 67 healthy volunteers. Twenty-eight subjects were found to have normal olfactory function, 29 had a particularly good sense of smell ("good normosmics") and 10 were hyposmic. Microbial community composition differed significantly between the three olfactory group

Intestinal microbiotas contain beneficial microorganisms that protect against pathogen colonization; treatment with antibiotics disrupts the microbiota and compromises colonization resistance. Here, we determine the impact of exchanging microorganisms between hosts on resilience to the colonization of invaders after antibiotic-induced dysbiosis. We assess the functional consequences of dysbiosis using a mouse model of colonization resistance against Escherichia coli. Antibiotics caused stochastic loss of members of the microbiota, but the microbiotas of co-housed mice remained more similar to

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, besides exerting detrimental effects on the upper digestive tract, can also damage the small and large intestine. Although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, there is evidence that enteric bacteria play a pivotal role. The present study examined the enteroprotective effects of a delayed-release formulation of rifaximin-EIR (R-EIR, 50mg/kg BID, i.g.), a poorly absorbed antibiotic with a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity, in a rat model of enteropathy induced by indomethacin (IND, 1.5mg/kg BID for 14 days) administration. R-EIR was administered

Solobacterium moorei is an anaerobic gram-positive bacillus that rarely causes bacteremia. Herein, we report a case of S. moorei bacteremia associated with acute cholangitis in a patient without malignancy. The patient had a history of chronic pancreatitis with pancreaticogastrostomy and presented with fever and abdominal pain. Computed tomography scans showed acute cholangitis and S. moorei identified in blood cultures were confirmed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry and 16S rRNA sequencing. The patient was successfully treated with endoscopic ret

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) are significant health burdens worldwide with a substantial rise in prevalence. Both can progress to liver cirrhosis. Recent studies have shown that the gut microbiome was associated with NAFLD/AFLD development and progression. The present review focuses on the characteristics of bacteria in NAFLD, AFLD and liver cirrhosis. The similarities and differences of intestinal bacteria are discussed. This study reviews the existing literatures on the microbiota, fatty liver disease, and liver cirrhosis based on Pubmed

In vitro studies were conducted in a series to investigate if the ruminal microbes are capable of degrading chlorpyrifos. This in vitro study presents the results from three experiments: Exp. I was conducted without feed, while Exp II and III were conducted with feed, either with or without methanol for dissolving chlorpyrifos, respectively. A basal diet comprising finger millet straw and concentrate was prepared. Incubation medium with feed but without chlorpyrifos served as the control. A total of six replicates each of control and chlorpyrifos spiked were used for the incubation. The pestic

BACKGROUND: Ureibacillus massiliensis (U. massiliensis), a Gram-positive bacterium belonging to the phylum Bacillota, has undergone two significant taxonomic revisions before being classified under the Ureibacillus. Although previous studies have highlighted its promising applications in industrial production and environmental remediation, the lack of genomic information has limited the research on its functional mechanisms and industrial development.
RESULT: This study successfully isolated and identified a novel strain of U. massiliensis through whole-genome sequencing, constructing a compl

Sex hormones play a crucial role in shaping gut microbiome composition and metabolism, with significant implications for mental health. This study investigated the effects of sex hormones and the psychotropic drug aripiprazole on the gut microbiome, using a novel in vitro colonic fermentation model adapted from the PolyFermS system. Fecal samples from four male and female donors were used to develop sexually divergent models, with the female model subjected to hormonal treatments mimicking different phases of the menstrual cycle. Microbiome composition and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) metabol

BACKGROUND: Parvimonas micra (P. micra) is a gram-positive anaerobic coccus that is detected widely on the skin, in the oral mucosa and in the gastrointestinal tract. In certain circumstances, P. micra can cause abdominal abscesses, bacteraemia and other infections. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no case reports describing the biological characteristics of P. micra-related pneumonia. These bacteria do not always multiply in an aerobic organ, such as the lung, and they could be easily overlooked because of the clinical mindset.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old pregnant woman was

Short-chain halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons (e.g. perchloroethene, trichloroethene) are among the most toxic environmental pollutants. Perchloroethene and trichloroethene can be dechlorinated to non-toxic ethene through reductive dechlorination by Dehalococcoides sp. Bioaugmentation, applying cultures containing organohalide-respiring microorganisms, is a possible technique to remediate sites contaminated with chlorinated ethenes. Application of site specific inocula is an efficient alternative solution. Our aim was to develop site specific dechlorinating microbial inocula by enriching micr

This study aimed to investigate the antidiabetic activity of water-ethanol extract of green macroalgae Enteromorpha prolifera (EPW) and its flavonoid-rich fraction less than 3 kDa (EPW3) in type 2 diabetic mice induced by streptozotocin and a high-sucrose/high-fat diet. The major active compounds were identified using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time-of-flight-tandem mass spectrometry. Quantitative gene expression analysis of the insulin signaling pathway was performed. The effects of EPW3 on gut microflora in diabetic mice were analyzed by high-throughput 1

Bacteria harbored in the male reproductive system may influence reproductive function and health of the male and result in developmental origins of adult health and disease (DOHaD) effects in his offspring. Such effects could be due to the seminal fluid, which is slightly basic and enriched with carbohydrates; thereby, creating an ideal habitat for microbes or a potential seminal fluid microbiome (SFM). Using wild-type (WT) and estrogen receptor-alpha (ESR1) knockout (KO) male mice, we describe a unique SFM whose inhabitants differ from gut microbes. The bacterial composition of the SFM is inf

OBJECTIVE: The relevance of the microbe-gut-brain axis to psychopathology is of interest in anorexia nervosa (AN), as the intestinal microbiota plays a critical role in metabolic function and weight regulation.
METHODS: We characterized the composition and diversity of the intestinal microbiota in AN, using stool samples collected at inpatient admission (T1; n = 16) and discharge (T2; n = 10). At T1, participants completed the Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories and the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire. Patients with AN were compared with healthy individuals who participated in a

The intestinal mucus layer protects the host from invading pathogens and is essential for maintaining a healthy mucosal microbial community. Alterations in the mucus layer and composition of mucus-residing microbiota in people diagnosed with autism may contribute to dysbiosis and gastrointestinal dysfunction. Although microbial dysbiosis based on sequencing data is frequently reported in autism, spatial profiling of microbes adjacent to the mucosa is needed to identify changes in bacterial subtypes in close contact with host tissues. Here, we analysed the spatial distribution of the mucin-2 pr
