The hindgut microbiota of coconut rhinoceros beetles (Oryctes rhinoceros) in relation to their geographical populations.

The coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB, Oryctes rhinoceros) is a palm tree pest capable of rapidly expanding its population in new territories. Previous studies identified a digestive symbiosis between CRB and its gut microbes. However, no research compared the genetic variation of CRBs with their hindgut microbiota on a global scale. This study aims to investigate the genetic divergence of CRB and the compositional variation of CRB's microbiota across different geographical locations, and explore the association between them and their predicted functional profiles and environmental data. The rese

Improved chromium tolerance of Medicago sativa by plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR).

BACKGROUND: Soil pollution by heavy metals increases the bioavailability of metals like hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)), subsequently limiting plant growth and reducing the efficiency of phytoremediation. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have substantial potential to enhance plant growth as well as plant tolerance to metal stress. The aim of this research was to investigate Cr (VI) phytoremediation enhancement by PGPR. RESULTS: The results showed that the 27 rhizobacterial isolates studied were confirmed as Cr (VI)-resistant PGPR, by using classical biochemical tests (phosphate solub

Smart textiles in wound care: functionalization of cotton/PET blends with antimicrobial nanocapsules.

Management of infected wounds is one of the most costly procedures in the health care sector. Burn wounds are of significant importance due to the high infection risk that can possibly lead to severe consequences such as sepsis. Because antibiotic wound treatments have caused increasing antibiotic resistance in bacteria, there is currently a strong need for alternative strategies. Therefore, we developed new antimicrobial wound dressings consisting of pH-responsive human serum albumin/silk fibroin nanocapsules immobilized onto cotton/polyethylene terephthalate (PET) blends loaded with eugenol,

Expression of tomato salicylic acid (SA)-responsive pathogenesis-related genes in Mi-1-mediated and SA-induced resistance to root-knot nematodes.

The expression pattern of pathogenesis-related genes PR-1, PR-2 and PR-5, considered as markers for salicylic acid (SA)-dependent systemic acquired resistance (SAR), was examined in the roots and shoots of tomato plants pre-treated with SA and subsequently infected with root-knot nematodes (RKNs) (Meloidogyne incognita). PR-1 was up-regulated in both roots and shoots of SA-treated plants, whereas the expression of PR-5 was enhanced only in roots. The over-expression of PR-1 in the whole plant occurred as soon as 1 day after SA treatment. Up-regulation of the PR-1 gene was considered to be the

Fe3+-Mediated Interfacial Polyphenol Coatings on Hair Fibers Using an Aronia melanocarpa Extract.

Aronia melanocarpa contains abundant phenolic compounds, including procyanidins, flavonols, flavan-3-ols, and phenolic acids, but its pronounced astringency limits its broader use in food applications. Catechol and other oxygen-donor motifs in plant phenolics are known to associate with Fe3+ and can support metal-phenolic assembly. In this study, ultrasound-assisted cellulase-pectinase extraction was used to recover an A. melanocarpa polyphenol extract, which was subsequently combined with Fe3+ to construct a plant-derived hair dye coating on keratin fibers. Under optimized extraction conditio

Harnessing the power of native biocontrol agents against wilt disease of Pigeonpea incited by Fusarium udum.

Fusarium wilt, caused by (Fusarium udum Butler), is a significant threat to pigeonpea crops worldwide, leading to substantial yield losses. Traditional approaches like fungicides and resistant cultivars are not practical due to the persistent and evolving nature of the pathogen. Therefore, native biocontrol agents are considered to be more sustainable solution, as they adapt well to local soil and climatic conditions. In this study, five isolates of F. udum infecting pigeonpea were isolated from various cultivars and characterized morphologically and molecularly. The isolate from the ICP 8858

In Vitro Evaluation of Some Endophytic Bacillus to Potentially Inhibit Grape and Grapevine Fungal Pathogens.

Romania has a long history of grapevine culturing and winemaking. However, like any agricultural sector, viticulture faces devastating biological threats. Fungi responsible for grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs) and grape spoilage lead to considerable yield losses and a decline in grapevine quality. In the actual context, many countries, including Romania, have reoriented their approaches to minimize chemical inputs, which have been proven to be toxic and to have negative impacts on the environment, and to replace them with sustainable biocontrol strategies for the wine-growing sector. Within bio

Exploring biocontrol and growth-promoting potential of multifaceted PGPR isolated from natural suppressive soil against the causal agent of chickpea wilt.

Chickpea is an important nutritive food crop both for humans and animals. Chickpea wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. ciceris (Foc) results in huge yield losses every year. Chickpea being a food crop requires the development of an eco-friendly bio-pesticide to effectively control the chickpea wilt disease. In this study, more than 50 bacterial stains isolated from the rhizosphere of healthy plants growing in wilt sick soil were examined for their Foc antagonist activities. Out of these, 17 strains showing > 90% growth inhibition of Foc were then characterized for their plant growth-promot
