The effect of fluoride on enamel and dentin formation in the uremic rat incisor.

Renal impairment in children is associated with tooth defects that include enamel pitting and hypoplasia. However, the specific effects of uremia on tooth formation are not known. In this study, we used rat mandibular incisors, which continuously erupt and contain all stages of tooth formation, to characterize the effects of uremia on tooth formation. We also tested the hypothesis that uremia aggravates the fluoride (F)-induced changes in developing teeth. Rats were subjected to a two-stage 5/6 nephrectomy or sham operation and then exposed to 0 (control) or 50 ppm NaF in drinking water for 14

Clinical evaluation of a novel dental whitening lamp and light-catalyzed peroxide gel.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether an ultraviolet light enhanced the whitening efficacy of a peroxide gel containing a photo-Fenton activator. METHODOLOGY: Fifty subjects were enrolled into the trial at two geographically separate sites. As directed by the randomization keys, teeth of half of the study subjects were concurrently exposed to the whitening lamp, while the gel was on their teeth, for a total light exposure of 45 minutes. The other half of the subjects received no light treatment. At each examination, clinical data were collected on the gingival index, shade score, and self-as

Bioactivity of diopside ceramic in human parotid saliva.

Diopside ceramic pellets with a nominal composition of 55.5 wt % SiO(2)-25.9 wt % CaO-18.0 wt % MgO were soaked in human parotid saliva (HPS) over different time intervals, to investigate the behavior of the material in a natural medium of high protein content. The results showed the formation of a hydroxyapatite (HA)-like layer on the surface of the ceramic, and suggested that the mechanism of HA-like layer formation in saliva was similar to that showed in vitro test by other silica-based materials. The HA-like layer formed at the interface was found to be compact, continuous, and composed of

Stannous fluoride dentifrice with sodium hexametaphosphate: review of laboratory, clinical and practice-based data.

Dentifrice was originally used to promote oral hygiene by cleaning teeth. However, with advances in product formulation, it has become a valuable vehicle for the delivery of agents offering health and cosmetic benefits. Stannous fluoride, introduced in 1955 in dentifrice, is one of the longest established of such agents. The well-known anti-caries efficacy of stannous fluoride is based on its impact on the tooth surfaces and on its antibacterial activity. More recently, the demand for tooth whitening products has increased, and sodium hexametaphosphate has been shown to be helpful in whitening

Hypergravity reduces F-actin accumulation in osteoclasts, with attenuated bone resorption.

Bone loss occurs in astronauts during prolonged spaceflight, thus indicating the sensitivity of skeletal homeostasis to altered gravitational environments. Previous studies have shown that microgravity affects osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption, which suggests that osteoclasts possess mechanisms to sense and respond to gravity-generated mechanical forces. For testing of the related mechanisms, hypergravity can be experimentally reproduced with use of a centrifuge. In the present study, osteoclasts derived from mouse bone marrow were subjected to hypergravity under three conditions:

Comparative evaluation of vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access and coronally advanced flap in adjunction with platelet-rich fibrin for maxillary gingival recession - A randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession requires root coverage to address esthetics and dentinal hypersensitivity, prevent root caries and abrasion, and improve plaque control. The coronally advanced flap (CAF) with subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) is a widely accepted gold standard but is technique sensitive and less predictable. The vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access (VISTA) technique is a minimally invasive alternative that yields more predictable results and better patient compliance. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) as a membrane for covering defects is less technique sensitive

Conservative aesthetic techniques for discoloured teeth: 1. The use of bleaching.

UNLABELLED: There is an increasing move towards more minimally invasive techniques in restorative dentistry. This series of two articles discusses conservative techniques for the treatment of discoloured teeth. A step-wise approach to treatment is promoted to encourage the most conservative solution to achieve satisfactory aesthetics. The first of these two articles will describe the use of bleaching, whilst part two will go on to describe microabrasion and the use of direct composite resin. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Discoloured teeth are a common dental problem. Bleaching provides a simple conserv

Effectiveness of a calculus scaling gel.

This study evaluated the effect of a calculus scaling gel (SofScale) on time and ease of the scaling procedure in a double-blind, split-mouth clinical study of 32 subjects. The Volpe-Manhold calculus index was used to quantify the distribution and amount of calculus deposition on the lingual aspect of the mandibular 6 anterior teeth at baseline. The gel was applied directly to the calculus and subgingivally to the area to be scaled. Pre- and post-treatment gingival and stain indices were taken. Operator and subject questionnaires were completed immediately after treatment to determine ease of

The Use of Silver Fluoride for Oral Health and Well-Being in Aged Care Residents: Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Older adults living in residential aged care facilities (RACFs), particularly in regional and rural areas, experience a high burden of untreated dental caries, tooth sensitivity, and oral pain. Workforce shortages, limited access to dental services, and competing health priorities make the delivery of timely oral health care challenging in these settings. Poor oral health contributes to pain, impaired nutrition, reduced quality of life, and increased health service use. There is an urgent need for context-appropriate, accessible, and cost-effective interventions for RACF residents.
