Lichen amyloidosus (LA) is a chronic pruritic skin disorder characterized by the deposition of amyloid in the papillary dermis. The usual features are multiple, discrete hyperkeratotic papules, which may coalesce into plaques that typically occur on the legs, especially the shins. We report a case of LA accompanied by vesicles and dyschromia.

INTRODUCTION: Informing children of their own HIV status is an important aspect of long-term disease management, yet there is little evidence of how and when this type of disclosure takes place in resource-limited settings and its impact.
METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Databases were searched for the terms hiv AND disclos* AND (child* OR adolesc*). We reviewed 934 article citations and the references of relevant articles to find articles describing disclosure to children and adolescents in resource-limited settings. Data were extracted regarding prevalence of disclosure, factors influe

A number of light-induced pathologic changes in the skin of individuals with HIV infection have been reported in the dermatologic literature. The relationship between HIV and one of these more well-defined types of photosensitivity, PCT, while still uncertain seems definable and related to an infectious origin. The relationship of retrovirus infection and photosensitivities that are of idiopathic origin in HIV-infected individuals, as well as non-infected individuals, is much more conjectural. The association seems, however, to be more frequent than co-incidental, and the link probably resides

The existing information supports the use of this material as described in this safety assessment. Tetrahydro-6-(3-pentenyl)-2H-pyran-2-one was evaluated for genotoxicity, repeated dose toxicity, reproductive toxicity, local respiratory toxicity, phototoxicity/photoallergenicity, skin sensitization, and environmental safety. Data show that tetrahydro-6-(3-pentenyl)-2H-pyran-2-one is not genotoxic. The repeated dose, reproductive, and local respiratory toxicity endpoints were evaluated using the Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC) for a Cramer Class II material, and the exposure to tetrahy

BACKGROUND: Contact sensitization is frequent among patients with frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) (52%-76%).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequency of sensitization/photosensitization in an FFA population.
METHODS: A population of FFA patients were patch tested (Spanish Contact Dermatitis Research Group [GEIDAC] baseline; cosmetic and fragrance series), and photopatch tested (sunscreen series).
RESULTS: Thirty-six patients (mean age: 64.6 years; 35/36: women) were studied. A history of dermatitis was recorded in 69.4% (frequently involving the face). Overall, 80.5% patients showed positive p

BACKGROUND: Poikiloderma of the face and neck (Civatte) is a rather common, indolent, chronic dermatosis, most often affecting menopausal females. Cumulative excessive sun exposure, a phototoxic or a photoallergic reaction, hormonal changes of menopause and genetic factors have all been incriminated in its obscure aetiopathogenesis.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of contact sensitization and photosensitivity in the pathogenesis of poikiloderma of Civatte (PC).
METHODS: Thirty-two patients (24 females and eight males, age range 38-74 years) with PC were patch tested with the European standar

Photopatch test (PhPT) interpretation is difficult and clinical relevance is not always apparent. A positive PhPT may reflect photocontact allergy or phototoxicity. We hypothesized that it may also reflect the additive or synergistic effects of a suberythemal reaction to a contact irritant [e.g. sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)] or allergen (e.g. nickel) and suberythemal UV exposure. 10 nickel allergic volunteers had duplicate SLS and nickel series applied on either side of the back for 24 h and 48 h, respectively. After removal, one side was irradiated with 5 J/cm(2) UVA or the dose below the mini

BACKGROUND: Chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD) is a photoallergic skin disease with abnormal hyperplasia. At present, the mechanism of abnormal proliferation is not clear.
OBJECTIVE: To explore possible mechanism of CAD proliferative lesions.
METHODS: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay and small RNA sequencing were carried out. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis was performed to evaluate expression levels of hsa-miR-221-3p and FOS. The interaction between hsa-miR-221-3p and FOS was identified by dual-luciferase reporter assay. Expression of hsa-miR-221-3p also was detected by qRT-PCR

We have demonstrated previously in guinea pigs that the induction of photocontact sensitivity to piroxicam (PXM) also induces a state of cross-reactive contact hypersensitivity to two compounds having structurally related elements, thimerosal (TMS) and thiosalicylate (TOS). The present study was conducted to determine whether oral administration of TOS would desensitize guinea pigs previously photosensitized with PXM. At the same time, the spectrum of reactivities against these compounds and against tenoxicam (TXM) which resembles only piroxicam was assessed by appropriate sensitizing and elic

In order to establish a consensus recommendation for performing photopatch testing, a photopatch test taskforce group was established under the joint umbrella of the European Society for Contact Dermatitis and the European Society for Photodermatology in 2000. After proposing the most adequate methodology in 2004 and completing a European multicentre photopatch test study in 2011, this taskforce is recommending a list of photoallergens that should form part of a baseline series for photopatch testing in Europe. It contains mainly ultraviolet filters and drugs, mostly non-steroidal anti-inflamm

PURPOSE: Differentiation between photoallergenic and phototoxic reactions induced by low molecular weight compounds represents a current problem. The use of keratinocytes as a potential tool for the detection of photoallergens as opposed to photoirritants is considered an interesting strategy for developing in vitro methods. We have previously shown that IL-18 production in the human keratinocyte cell line NCTC 2455 is a good model for the in vitro identification of contact sensitizers. The purpose of this manuscript is to summarize data obtained in the NCTC 2544 assay as an in vitro model to

Ketoprofen (KP) is a widely used transdermal non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. However, increasing number of adverse effect case reports suggests that KP transdermal formulation can cause photoallergic reaction. The photoallergic potential of KP is attributable to the instability of KP under UV/visible light and subsequent formation of reactive degradation products. In this study, we investigated whether the inclusion of titanium dioxide (TiO(2)), a well-known mineral sunscreen agent, in the KP transdermal patch can prevent the photodegradation of KP and ultimately, can reduce photoallergi

Photodermatoses are a group of skin disorders induced by ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and, in some cases, visible light. To establish a diagnosis it is important to carefully take a history, physical examination and perform phototesting as well as other testing when appropriate (patch and photopatch tests, antinuclear antibodies, porphyrin profile). This article focuses on the photodermatoses that affect the elderly, which with the ageing of population, particularly in the industrialized societies, are becoming an increasingly important group for the healthcare systems. The most common photoder

Solar urticaria serves as a model to illustrate the photodiagnostic approach in rare photodermatoses and to demonstrate how patients can be effectively helped by prophylactic and therapeutic intervention. To accomplish these tasks, advanced knowledge and experience in photodermatology is required, along with equipment which is often available in specialized centers only. A list is attached listing the dermatology departments with photodiagnostic units in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Photo patch tests (Standard battery of the SFPD) were made on 45 patients who were suspected of exogenous photosensitization during 1996. Certain suspected topicals or drugs completed the battery. The results obtained are analysed and compared with those in the literature.

Mequitazine is a phenothiazine derivative antihistamine. We experienced 2 cases of mequitazine-induced photosensitivity reaction in patients who took mequitazine for their dermatologic problems. Case no. 1 showed features of photoallergy such as 1-month incubation period, decreased MED to UVA, strong positive photopatch test result, cross reaction to chlorpromazine, and angry back phenomenon found in allergic contact dermatitis. In addition, an immediate erythematous macule was observed on the photopatch test site of mequitazine directly after UV exposure which was similar to the immediate ery

Polymorphic light eruption (PLE) is a common skin disorder provoked by exposure to UVR. Its clinical symptoms resemble those of a contact allergic reaction. PLE is generally considered a T-cell-mediated autoimmune reaction toward a yet unidentified antigen formed in UVR-exposed skin. Predisposition to such an immune reaction may result from aberrant epitope formation, increased immune reactivity to a universal epitope, or diminished propensity to UVR-induced immunosuppression or to the induction of tolerance. In a study comprising a total of 24 PLE patients and 24 healthy sex- and age-matched
