Intracranial EEGs evidenced visual object processing in the human medial temporal lobe subregions.

The perirhinal cortex (PRC) and parahippocampal cortex (PHC) are core regions along the visual dual-stream. The specific functional roles of the PRC and PHC and their interactions with the downstream hippocampus cortex (HPC) are crucial for understanding visual memory. Our research used human intracranial EEGs to study the neural mechanism of the PRC, PHC, and HPC in visual object encoding. Single-regional function analyses found evidence that the PRC, PHC, and HPC are activated ∼100 ms within the broad-gamma band and that the PRC was more strongly activated than either the PHC or the HPC afte

Recording of single-unit activities with flexible micro-electrocorticographic array in rats for decoding of whole-body navigation.

Objective.Micro-electrocorticographic (μECoG) arrays are able to record neural activities from the cortical surface, without the need to penetrate the brain parenchyma. Owing in part to small electrode sizes, previous studies have demonstrated that single-unit spikes could be detected from the cortical surface, and likely from Layer I neurons of the neocortex. Here we tested the ability to useμECoG arrays to decode, in rats, body position during open field navigation, through isolated single-unit activities.Approach. μECoG arrays were chronically implanted onto primary motor cortex (M1) of Wis

Ictal Central Apnea Is Predictive of Mesial Temporal Seizure Onset: An Intracranial Investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Ictal central apnea (ICA) is a semiological sign of focal epilepsy, associated with temporal and frontal lobe seizures. In this study, using qualitative and quantitative approaches, we aimed to assess the localizational value of ICA. We also aimed to compare ICA clinical utility in relation to other seizure semiological features of focal epilepsy. METHODS: We analyzed seizures in patients with medically refractory focal epilepsy undergoing intracranial stereotactic electroencephalographic (SEEG) evaluations with simultaneous multimodal cardiorespiratory monitoring. A total of 179 s

Six-dimensional dynamic tractography atlas of language connectivity in the developing brain.

During a verbal conversation, our brain moves through a series of complex linguistic processing stages: sound decoding, semantic comprehension, retrieval of semantically coherent words, and overt production of speech outputs. Each process is thought to be supported by a network consisting of local and long-range connections bridging between major cortical areas. Both temporal and extratemporal lobe regions have functional compartments responsible for distinct language domains, including the perception and production of phonological and semantic components. This study provides quantitative evid

Connectivity Gradient in the Human Left Inferior Frontal Gyrus: Intraoperative Cortico-Cortical Evoked Potential Study.

In the dual-stream model of language processing, the exact connectivity of the ventral stream to the anterior temporal lobe remains elusive. To investigate the connectivity between the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and the lateral part of the temporal and parietal lobes, we integrated spatiotemporal profiles of cortico-cortical evoked potentials (CCEPs) recorded intraoperatively in 14 patients who had undergone surgical resection for a brain tumor or epileptic focus. Four-dimensional visualization of the combined CCEP data showed that the pars opercularis (Broca's area) is connected to the post

Suppressive control of optokinetic and vestibular nystagmus by the primate frontal eye field.

When the eyes are fixated on a spot, fixation neurons in the frontal eye field (FEF) show an increase in activity. Our previous study suggested that fixation neurons in the FEF contribute to the suppression of saccades and smooth pursuit eye movements to maintain active fixation. The present study examined the role of the FEF in the suppressive control of reflexive eye movements, optokinetic and vestibular nystagmus, in trained monkeys. Electrical stimulation in the FEF suppressed the quick and slow phases of optokinetic and vestibular nystagmus at an intensity lower than the threshold for eli

How the insula speaks to the heart: Cardiac responses to insular stimulation in humans.

Despite numerous studies suggesting the role of insular cortex in the control of autonomic activity, the exact location of cardiac motor regions remains controversial. We provide here a functional mapping of autonomic cardiac responses to intracortical stimulations of the human insula. The cardiac effects of 100 insular electrical stimulations into 47 epileptic patients were divided into tachycardia, bradycardia, and no cardiac response according to the magnitude of RR interval (RRI) reactivity. Sympathetic (low frequency, LF, and low to high frequency powers ratio, LF/HF ratio) and parasympat

Brain Mechanisms of Arithmetic: A Crucial Role for Ventral Temporal Cortex.

Elementary arithmetic requires a complex interplay between several brain regions. The classical view, arising from fMRI, is that the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and the superior parietal lobe (SPL) are the main hubs for arithmetic calculations. However, recent studies using intracranial electroencephalography have discovered a specific site, within the posterior inferior temporal cortex (pITG), that activates during visual perception of numerals, with widespread adjacent responses when numerals are used in calculation. Here, we reexamined the contribution of the IPS, SPL, and pITG to arithmetic

The 5-HT7 receptor antagonist SB-269970 alleviates seizure activity and downregulates hippocampal c-Fos expression in pentylenetetrazole-induced kindled rats.

OBJECTIVES: Recently, studies have demonstrated that serotonin type 7 receptors (5-HT7) have conflincting effects on neuronal excitability in different brain regions. However, the effect of 5-HT7 on seizures has not been exactly elucidated yet. Therefore, our aim in this study was to investigate the effects of 5-HT7 antagonist SB-269970 on pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) induced fully kindled rats. METHODS: In the study, 32 adult male Wistar Albino rats (weighing 220-260 g) were used. Rats were injected with PTZ (35 mg/kg) intraperitoneally every other day to generate kindling model. 5-CT (0.1 mg/kg

Mild passive focal cooling prevents epileptic seizures after head injury in rats.

OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic epilepsy is prevalent, often difficult to manage, and currently cannot be prevented. Although cooling is broadly neuroprotective, cooling-induced prevention of chronic spontaneous recurrent seizures has never been demonstrated. We examined the effect of mild passive focal cooling of the perilesional neocortex on the development of neocortical epileptic seizures after head injury in the rat. METHODS: Rostral parasagittal fluid percussion injury in rats reliably induces a perilesional, neocortical epileptic focus within weeks after injury. Epileptic seizures were asses

Cortical glucose metabolism correlates negatively with delta-slowing and spike-frequency in epilepsy associated with tuberous sclerosis.

The mechanism of altered glucose metabolism seen on positron emission tomography (PET) in focal epilepsy is not fully understood. We determined the association between interictal glucose metabolism and interictal neuronal activity, using PET and electrocorticography (ECoG) measures derived from 865 intracranial electrode sites in 11 children with focal epilepsy associated with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) (age: 0.5-16 years) undergoing epilepsy surgery. A multiple linear regression analysis was applied to each patient, to determine whether the glucose uptake at each electrode site on inter

Closing the Loop With Cortical Sensing: The Development of Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation for Essential Tremor Using the Activa PC+S.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is an important tool in the treatment of pharmacologically resistant neurological movement disorders such as essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the open-loop design of current systems may be holding back the true potential of invasive neuromodulation. In the last decade we have seen an explosion of activity in the use of feedback to "close the loop" on neuromodulation in the form of adaptive DBS (aDBS) systems that can respond to the patient's therapeutic needs. In this paper we summarize the accomplishments of a 5-year study at the Univer

Separability of motor imagery of the self from interpretation of motor intentions of others at the single trial level: an EEG study.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the separability of the neural correlates of 2 types of motor imagery, self and third person (actions owned by the participant himself vs. another individual). If possible this would allow for the development of BCI interfaces to train disorders of action and intention understanding beyond simple imitation, such as autism. METHODS: We used EEG recordings from 20 healthy participants, as well as electrocorticography (ECoG) in one, based on a virtual reality setup. To test feasibility of discrimination between each type of imagery at the single trial level, t

[Supratentorial cavernoma and epileptic seizures. Are there predictors for postoperative seizure control?].

For cavernous haemangiomas, it is the aim of surgical treatment to control epilepsy and eliminate potential sources of intracerebral haematomas. In the following investigation, it was attempted to find indicators for seizure freedom after surgery. Success of therapy was assessed according to three patterns of classification. Thirty patients underwent tailored resection based on findings from preoperative investigations and intraoperative electrocorticography. Follow-up averaged 4 years. Lesionectomy, extended lesionectomy, and modified lobe resection were carried out in 13, 11, and six patient

Intracranial mapping identifies high-frequency cortical dynamics underlying visual discomfort.

High-contrast striped patterns near 3 cycles per degree are well established as a cause of visual discomfort and perceptual distortions, which in clinical populations can manifest as symptoms such as migraines or seizures. This sensitivity has been linked to cortical hyperexcitability, characterized by abnormally increased neural responses to visual input. Although gamma-band oscillations in visual cortex are known to reflect excitatory-inhibitory dynamics associated with pattern sensitivity, the contribution of higher-frequency neural activity and large-scale network interactions has received

Theta-range SEEG stimulation for intracranial mapping: extending conventional 1-Hz and 50-Hz protocols.

OBJECTIVE: Electrical brain stimulations (EBS) are central to epileptic network identification and functional mapping during stereo-electroencephalography, yet stimulation frequencies remain empirical, and standardized across patients and brain regions, producing false negatives and false positives, and potentially compromising surgical outcome. We prospectively investigated theta-range EBS (7 Hz) in the temporal lobe, a prominent physiological frequency band in this region, and compared it with conventional 1-Hz and 50-Hz protocols. METHODS: We analyzed 1,408 temporal EBS in 25 drug-resistan

Acute and persistent changes in neural oscillatory activity predict development of epilepsy following acute organophosphate intoxication in adult rats.

OBJECTIVE: Acute organophosphate (OP) intoxication affects a significant number of individuals worldwide. Those who survive OP-induced cholinergic crisis, which includes status epilepticus, often develop neurological morbidities. Here, we provide a rigorous characterization of the acute and delayed electrophysiological responses to OP intoxication with the goal of identifying early electrophysiological changes that predict later brain changes, including spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRS). METHODS: Male and female rats were implanted with electroencephalographic (EEG) and intracranial EEG el
