OBJECTIVE: Turner teeth are developmental defects of permanent teeth commonly associated with disturbances affecting the corresponding primary predecessors, particularly infection or trauma. Although their clinical features have been described in previous reports, detailed histopathological characterization of severe Turner teeth, especially with respect to pulp tissue alterations, remains limited. This case-control study compared severe Turner teeth with normal teeth, focusing primarily on structural and molecular alterations in pulp tissue and descriptively on periodontal tissue morphology.

According to the World Health Organization more than 60% of European countries have achieved the goal of no more than 3 DMFT at the age of 12 years. The others, including the newly independent Baltic states, still have high caries levels. Data from recent studies show that mean caries prevalence among 12-year-olds in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia was 5.8, 4.9, and 4.6, respectively. Absence of caries was recorded in 5% of Latvian and Estonian and 12% of Lithuanian 12-year-olds. Fifteen-year-old Latvians and Lithuanians averaged 8.1 and 7.0 DMFT, which, owing to the absence of radiographic exa

Osteoclasts are multinucleated cells with the specialized function of resorbing calcified tissues. These cells develop from hemopoietic cells of the monocyte-macrophage lineage with the support of osteoblasts/stromal cells. Tooth eruption is a vertical movement of teeth via creation of an eruption pathway in and through the alveolar bone. The precise cellular and molecular determinants of tooth eruption are not yet clear, and a cell culture system that can reproduce the activity of osteoclast formation during tooth eruption is expected to be a useful tool to clarify the mechanism of eruption p

Dentinogenesis Imperfecta (DI) is a rare genetic disorder that disrupts the structure and mechanical integrity of dentin, often through alterations to the collagen matrix. In cases associated with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, DI arises from COL1A1 or COL1A2 variants (DI type I). The multiscale mechanisms linking alterations of the collagenic scaffold to dentin microstructural defects remain poorly understood. In this proof-of-concept study, we employed a multimodal 3D characterization framework combining biochemical assays and advanced imaging techniques to investigate the relationship between col

BACKGROUND: From 2005 to 2015, the prevalence of dental caries in both primary and permanent dentitions was significantly increased in China. Previous studies have shown that the prevalence of permanent dental caries in school-aged children had already reached 19.7%-54.0%, 97.5% affecting first permanent molars. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and contributing factors of dental caries in 6-year-old children in four regions of China to provide information for oral health promotion programs.
METHODS: A randomized cluster sampling method was employed in the study. All 6-year-old f

The development of the tooth at gene level is beginning to be understood. This paper reviews current knowledge and the advances in research on human genes whose defect leads to dental anomalies. Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a diverse group of hereditary disorders characterized by a variety of developmental enamel defects including hypoplasia and hypomineralization, some of which have been revealed to be associated with defective amelogenin genes. The human amelogenin genes on X and Y chromosomes have been cloned and investigated extensively. Although autosomally inherited forms of AI are mo

The development of caries management materials has concentrated on the dual objectives of inhibiting cariogenic microorganisms and promoting remineralization. In this study, 2 dual-functional ionic liquid (IL) varnishes, exhibiting both antibacterial and remineralization capabilities, were synthesized as novel anticaries agents. The ionic liquids (ILs) were prepared by modifying 1-hexylimidazolium IL with 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane, followed by anion exchange with F- and a coordination reaction with Sr2+, respectively. The ILs were characterized using energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), i

INTRODUCTION: Probiotics are living micro-organisms that are likely to influence oral health by modulating the oral microbiota and offer a promising preventive approach to gum and dental disease. This approach is particularly relevant for orthodontic patients, who are more susceptible to gingival inflammation and plaque accumulation. The aim of this randomized controlled study was to compare the effects of a probiotic toothpaste versus a regular toothpaste on gingival health and plaque levels in orthodontic patients.
METHODS: Participants were recruited between 4 June 2024 and 15 July 2024, a

Streptococcus mutans is a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic bacterium, which causes dental caries after forming biofilms on the tooth surface while producing organic acids that demineralize enamel and dentin. We observed that the polyunsaturated arachidonic acid (AA) (ω-6; 20:4) had an anti-bacterial activity against S. mutans, which prompted us to investigate its mechanism of action. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of AA on S. mutans was 25 μg/ml in the presence of 5% CO2, while it was reduced to 6.25-12.5 μg/ml in the absence of CO2 supplementation. The anti-bacterial action wa

UNLABELLED: Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) has a superior ability to rapidly metabolize sucrose into exopolysaccharides (EPS, mainly glucans), which serve as a critical virulence factor related to dental caries. Despite extensive research on sucrose-dependent EPS at the molecular and macroscale levels, however, the mechanisms underlying EPS effects at the microscale level remain poorly understood. Here, by employing bacteria tracking and fluorescence staining techniques, we investigated the role of sucrose-dependent EPS during biofilm development of S. mutans at the microscale level for both

Throughout the developing world, over 200 million people drink groundwater containing fluoride concentrations surpassing the World Health Organization's maximum recommended contaminant level (WHO-MCL) of 1.5 mg F-/L, resulting in adverse health effects ranging from mottled tooth enamel to debilitating skeletal fluorosis. Existing technologies to remove fluoride from water, such as reverse osmosis and filtration with activated alumina, are expensive and are not accessible for low-income communities. Our group and others have demonstrated that minimally-processed bauxite ores can remove fluoride

Interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha) enhances the gene expression of colony-stimulating factor-one (CSF-1) in dental follicle cells. In turn, CSF-1 appears to be a critical molecule in stimulating the cellular events of eruption that require the presence of the follicle. Chronologically, the maximal transcription and translation of CSF-1 in the follicle occurs early postnatally, followed by a decline later. Thus, in this study, immunostaining for the interleukin-1 receptor type I (IL-1RI) was used to determine if it paralleled the CSF-1 localization and chronology. The results showed that IL-1RI is

Fluoride, of all inorganic substances, is among the least likely to be identified by a routine toxicological analysis. Acute poisonings with salts of hydrofluoric or fluorosilicic acid, however, although relatively uncommon, may occur. Some fluorosilicates, salts of fluorosilicic acid (e.g. Al, Zn, Pb, Mg) are used as stone consolidants, others (e.g. sodium fluorosilicate)--in the production of enamel and milk glass, or as insecticide. In this paper, two fatal cases of poisonings are presented: a suicide involving sodium fluorosilicate of a 39-year-old male who died in his flat, without hospit

Resorption is the main reason for loss of replanted teeth. The outcome examined in this study is the timing of the onset of resorption. The effect of dichotomised dry and wet time intervals as well as the presence of additional crown damage and of contamination were determined. Of 84 replanted teeth, 67.5% developed resorptions. Twenty-eight had detectable additional crown damage with a more rapid onset being seen in these cases (P=0.009). The critical limit for dry time was 15 min (P=0.038) and significant differences persisted for greater limits also. Serial analysis of the association betwe

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession is defined as the oral exposure of the root surface due to a displacement of the gingival margin apical to the cemento-enamel junction and it is regularly linked to the deterioration of dental aesthetics. Successful treatment of recession-type defects is based on the use of predictable root coverage periodontal plastic surgery (RCPPS) procedures. This review is an update of the original version that was published in 2009.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of different root coverage procedures in the treatment of single and multiple recession-type defects.
