Evidence for the involvement of the monoaminergic system, but not the opioid system in the antidepressant-like activity of ellagic acid in mice.

Dietary flavonoids possess a multiplicity of neuroprotective actions in various central nervous pathophysiological conditions including depression. Ellagic acid is a polyphenolic compound that occurs in plants such as raspberries, nuts and eucalyptus species. The present study was designed to investigate the antidepressant-like effect of ellagic acid in mice using forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST). The involvement of the monoaminergic and opioid systems in the antidepressant-like activity of ellagic acid was also studied. Our results showed that ellagic acid when admini

Gitelman's syndrome with persistent hypokalemia - don't forget licorice, alcohol, lemon juice, iced tea and salt depletion: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic hypokalemia is the main finding in patients with Gitelman's syndrome. Exogenous factors can trigger deterioration of the patient's condition and provoke clinical symptoms. We discuss the pathophysiology of and therapy for Gitelman's syndrome, with a focus on dietary factors which may aggravate the disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 31-year-old, previously apparently healthy Caucasian Swiss man who presented to our hospital with gait disturbance of subacute onset and a potassium level of 1.5 mmol/L. A detailed medical history revealed that he had been c

A history of mass spectrometry in Australia.

An interest in mass spectrometry in Australia can be traced back to the 1920s with an early correspondence with Francis Aston who first visited these shores a decade earlier. The region has a rich tradition in both the development of the field and its application, from early measurements of ionization and appearance potentials by Jim Morrison at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) around 1950 to the design and construction of instrumentation including the first use of a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer for tandem mass spectrometry, the first suite of programs to simula

Navigating Guaiacyl and Syringyl Lignin Structural Complexity in Intact Plant Cell Walls Through 13C Chemical Shift Mapping by Two-Dimensional Solid-State NMR.

Lignin is a structurally complex and heterogeneous biopolymer whose in situ architecture remains difficult to resolve because of extensive spectral overlap and structural perturbations introduced during isolation and dissolution. These challenges have limited direct interrogation of native lignin within intact plant cell walls and underscore the need for analytical approaches capable of resolving lignin structure in its native context. Here, we present a framework that assists systematic 13C solid-state NMR identification of guaiacyl- and syringyl-based lignin motifs, including their associate

Olfactory training improves cognition and modifies brain networks in type 2 diabetes patients with mild cognitive impairment: A 16-week randomised controlled trial.

AIMS: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) related cognitive impairment links to comorbid and modifiable olfactory dysfunction; however, the efficacy of olfactory training (OT) to mitigate cognitive decline specifically in these patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) remains unestablished. This study aimed to determine whether OT alleviates cognitive decline in this population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this 16-week, open-label trial, 60 T2D participants with MCI were randomly assigned (1:1) to OT or routine care (control). The OT group performed twice-daily 6-minute exposure to six odorants (rose, e

In vitro activity of Western Australian honeys and Manuka honey against clinically important yeasts.

With the steady rise in antifungal resistance amongst clinically important yeasts, antifungal drug discovery remains of the utmost importance. To determine the potential of some honeys as alternative antifungal agents, we quantified the antifungal activity of 12 Western Australian honey samples, two Manuka honey samples and an artificial honey against 10 yeast isolates including clinical and reference strains. Results showed that the tested honeys varied in activity, and yeasts species also differed in susceptibility, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) determined by broth microdilut

1.8-cineole prevents platelet activation and aggregation by activating the cAMP pathway via the adenosine A2A receptor.

AIMS: Dysregulated platelet aggregation is a fatal condition in many bacterial- and virus-induced diseases. However, classical antithrombotics cannot completely prevent immunothrombosis, due to the unaddressed mechanisms towards inflammation. Thus, targeting platelet hyperactivation together with inflammation might provide new treatment options in diseases, characterized by immunothrombosis, such as COVID-19 and sepsis. The aim of this study was to investigate the antiaggregatory effect and mode of action of 1.8-cineole, a monoterpene derived from the essential oil of eucalyptus leaves, known

The Effect of Some Wild Grown Plant Extracts and Essential Oils on Pectobacterium betavasculorum: The Causative Agent of Bacterial Soft Rot and Vascular Wilt of Sugar Beet.

The bacterial soft rot and vascular wilt of sugar beet are the major diseases of sugar crops globally induced by Pectobacterium betavasculorum and P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc). The control of this bacterial disease is a severe problem, and only a few copper-based chemical bactericides are available for this disease. Because of the limitations of chemicals to control plant bacterial pathogens, the essential oils and extracts have been considered one of the best alternative strategies for their control. In this study, twenty-seven essential oils and twenty-nine plant extracts were ext

Natural Immunomodulators Treat the Cytokine Storm in SARS-CoV-2.

Recently, the world has been dealing with a destructive global pandemic Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection, since 2020; there were millions of infections and hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide. With sequencing generations of the virus, around 60% are expected to become infected during the pandemic. Unfortunately, no drug or vaccine has been approved because no real evidence from clinical trials in treatment was reached. According to current thinking, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) mortality is caused by a cytokine storm syndrome in patients with

Mechanistic insights into Candida biofilm eradication potential of eucalyptol.

AIM: Candida-associated fungal infections are prevalent in hospitalized and immune-compromised patients. Their biofilm architecture and high rate of antifungal resistance make treatment challenging. Eucalyptol (EPTL), a monoterpene majorly present in the essential oil of eucalyptus is well known for curing respiratory infections. Hence, the present study investigated the anti-biofilm efficacy of EPTL against the laboratory strains and clinical isolates of Candida to delineate its mode of action. METHODS: The effect of EPTL on the viability, biofilm formation, and mature biofilm of Candida str

Antimicrobial activity of a traditionally used complex essential oil distillate (Olbas(®) Tropfen) in comparison to its individual essential oil ingredients.

Plant extracts and essential oils have been widely studied and used as antimicrobial agents in the last decades. In our study we investigated the antimicrobial activities of Olbas(®) Tropfen (in the following named Olbas), a traditionally used complex essential oil distillate, in comparison to its individual essential oil ingredients. Olbas (10 g) consists of three major components such as peppermint oil (5.3 g), eucalyptus oil (2.1 g), and cajuput oil (2.1 g) and of two minor constituents like juniper berry oil (0.3 g) and wintergreen oil (0.2 g). The composition of Olbas and the five individ

Formulation, optimization, and preclinical assessment of a QbD-engineered transethosomal pregabalin patch for neuropathic pain.

Neuropathic pain is a major clinical challenge since it has complex pathophysiology and multifactorial etiology. Pregabalin is an anticonvulsant drug that binds with the α2δ subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels, decreases their influx, and eventually lowers the release of excitatory neurotransmitters. The conventional oral Pregabalin exhibits lower therapeutic efficacy because of its variable absorption, CNS side effects, and frequent dosing. This present study suggests a new transdermal formulation containing transethosomes loaded with pregabalin to provide sustained drug release, enhanc

Three amendments reduced the bioavailability of heavily contaminated soil with arsenic and cadmium and increased the relative feeding value of Lolium perenne L.

Soils heavily contaminated with arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) are fully utilized and create economic value by growing forages with high standard limits for heavy metals. In this study, 0.5 %, 1 % and 2 % of applied amounts of lime + ferrous sulfate (LF) and 0.25 %, 0.5 % and 1 % of applied amounts of Fe-modified biochar (MB) and Fe-modified eucalyptus sawdust (MC) were added to As and Cd cocontaminated soil planted with ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). The results showed that the amendment-induced changes in soil pH and cation exchange capacity (CEC) contributed to the reduction in soil available

Effects of 1,8-cineole on neuropathic pain mediated by P2X2 receptor in the spinal cord dorsal horn.

As an intractable health threat, neuropathic pain is now a key problem in clinical therapy, which can be caused by lesions affecting the peripheral nervous systems. 1,8-cineole is a natural monoterpene cyclic ether present in eucalyptus and has been reported to exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Research has shown that 1,8-cineole inhibits P2X3 receptor-mediated neuropathic pains in dorsal root ganglion. The P2X2 and P2X3 receptors participate in the transmission of algesia and nociception information by primary sensory neurons. In the present study, We thus investigated in the

Physiological stress levels in wild koala sub-populations facing anthropogenic induced environmental trauma and disease.

Australian small mammals such as koalas must cope with immense pressure from anthropogenic induced stressors or trauma such as bushfires, vehicle collision impacts and habitat disturbance and land clearance. In addition, they must cope with diseases such as chlamydia. To date, there is no published literature on physiological stress levels in wild koala populations compared with identified environmental stressors. This study investigated physiological stress levels within sub-populations of wild koalas encountering environmental trauma and disease from New South Wales (NSW), Queensland (QLD) a

The efficacy of Australian essential oils for the treatment of head lice infestation in children: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The increase in resistance of head lice to neurotoxic pediculicides and public concern over their safety has led to an increase in alternative treatments, many of which are poorly researched or even untested. METHODS: A multicentre, randomised, assessor-blind, parallel-group trial (Trial 1) was conducted to compare the safety and efficacy of a head lice treatment containing Australian eucalyptus oil and Leptospermum petersonii (EO/LP solution; applied thrice with 7-day intervals between applications) with a neurotoxic treatment containing pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide (P/PB mo
