Study protocol for a phase III randomised controlled trial of Sailuotong (SLT) for vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease with cerebrovascular disease.

Vascular dementia (VaD) accounts for 15-20% of all dementia cases. It is a syndrome of acquired cognitive impairment with a complex pathophysiological basis. A novel herbal formulation (Sailuotong; SLT) consisting of Panax ginseng C.A Mey, Ginkgo biloba L and Crocus sativus L extracts was developed to treat VaD. Preclinical animal studies found significant improvements in memory and in pathogenic biochemical parameters. Appropriate safety of SLT was shown in acute and chronic toxicity studies, and early clinical trials of SLT demonstrated enhancements in cognition in VaD patients. A fully powe

MALDI MSI-based spatial amine metabolomics revealing the protective effect of combination therapy against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion-induced brain injury in rats.

Complex amine metabolic disorders are implicated in ischemic stroke and can further exacerbate brain damage. Therefore, ameliorating their metabolic disorder would be an effective way to improve recovery from brain damage after ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. In this work, the protective effects of Edaravone (Eda), Ginaton injection (Gin), and their combination (Eda+Gin) against cerebral I/R injury in a middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) rat model were preliminarily investigated from the perspective of spatial metabolomics. Compared to single-drug treatment, the optimized

The Antioxidative Effects of Picein and Its Neuroprotective Potential: A Review of the Literature.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are the main cause of dementia in the elderly, having no cure to date, as the currently available therapies focus on symptom remission. Most NDDs will progress despite treatment and eventually result in the death of the patient after several years of a burden on both the patient and the caregivers. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate agents that tackle the disease pathogenesis and can efficiently slow down or halt disease progression, with the hope of curing the patients and preventing further burden and mortality. Accordingly, recent research has focuse

Medicinal plants as a potential source of Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors: A review.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The prevalence and distress caused by erectile dysfunction (ED) to both male and female partners are increasing at a steady rate. ED has now become the most treated sexual disorder for men among young and old age groups due to varying physical and psychological factors. The treatment with synthetic Phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors are cost-effective but due to adverse effects such as priapism, loss of vision, heart attack and syncope, the daily life patterns of these patients are distressed and hence the need for alternative medicaments or sources are of ut

Ginkgolic acid (GA) suppresses gastric cancer growth by inducing apoptosis and suppressing STAT3/JAK2 signaling regulated by ROS.

Gastric cancer is a frequently occurring cancer with high mortality each year worldwide. Finding new and effective therapeutic strategy against human gastric cancer is still urgently required. Ginkgolic acid (GA), a botanical drug, is extracted from the seed coat of Ginkgo biloba L. with various bioactive properties, including anti-tumor. Unfortunately, if GA has antitumor effect on human gastric cancer and the underlying molecular mechanisms have yet to be investigated. In the present study, we found that GA markedly reduced the gastric cancer cell viability. Furthermore, GA treatment led to

Ginkgolic acid induces interplay between apoptosis and autophagy regulated by ROS generation in colon cancer.

Presently, developing effective anti-colon cancer drugs still remains to be important. Ginkgolic acids (GA), as a botanical drug extracted from the seed coat of Ginkgo biloba L., possess various bioactive properties. Our findings, for the first time, indicated that GA suppressed colon cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion. GA led to cell death through G0/G1 phase arrest. In addition, apoptosis was significantly induced by GA treatment. The intrinsic apoptosis pathway was included, proved by the release of cytochrome c (Cyto-c) from the mitochondria into the cytosol. GA-induced auto

Plant-based medicines for anxiety disorders, part 2: a review of clinical studies with supporting preclinical evidence.

Research in the area of herbal psychopharmacology has revealed a variety of promising medicines that may provide benefit in the treatment of general anxiety and specific anxiety disorders. However, a comprehensive review of plant-based anxiolytics has been absent to date. Thus, our aim was to provide a comprehensive narrative review of plant-based medicines that have clinical and/or preclinical evidence of anxiolytic activity. We present the article in two parts. In part one, we reviewed herbal medicines for which only preclinical investigations for anxiolytic activity have been performed. In

Determination of metabolic markers for lipid metabolism disorders and liver injury recovery via PXR/FXR-CYP7A1 regulation by Folium Ginkgo.

The therapeutic effect of Folium Ginkgo (GK) in treating hyperlipidemia is well known and has been widely investigated. However, a precise and microcosmic biological evidence is lacking to support and validate this effect. To better understand the therapeutic mechanisms of GK, the regulatory activity of the Pregnane X receptor (PXR)/ Farnesoid X receptor (FXR)- Cytochrome P450 family 7 subfamily A polypeptide 1 (CYP7A1) axis was hypothesized as a potential pathway and validated through multiple dimensions, including pharmacology, molecular biology, and metabolomics experiments. We established

Identification and management of tardive dyskinesia: A case series and literature review.

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a serious, disabling and potentially permanent, neurological hyperkinetic movement disorder that occurs after months or years of taking dopamine receptor-blocking agents. The pathophysiology of TD is complex, multifactorial and still not fully understood. Although there is no identified effective and standard treatment for TD, several agents have been tried for the management of this motor disturbance. The aim of this case series is to review the literature in regard to the identification, diagnosis and the treatment of TD with anticholinergics, anticholinergic medic

Combined effects of fenugreek-milk thistle-ginkgo and thyme-cinnamon-oregano feed additives on physicochemical and oxidative stability profiles of broiler meat.

Chicken breast meat is susceptible to lipid and protein oxidation during post-mortem processing and storage, which adversely affects its physicochemical properties, nutritional value, and market acceptability. Most existing research has concentrated on single-component plant extracts as feed additives, whereas the combined effects of multi-plant additives remain insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated the effects of two composite plant-derived feed additives (Group A: Trigonella foenum-graecum, Silybum marianum, and Ginkgo biloba; Group K: Thymus vulgaris, Cinnamomum verum, and Orig
