BACKGROUND: Penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) in children is associated with specific age-related problems. In contrast to adults, children can be examined less easily and they are not readily complaining about symptoms. Thus, the rate of intra- and postoperative complications is higher than in adults. In addition, amblyopia is a major issue before the age of seven years potentially resulting in irreversible reduction of visual acuity.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Potential indications for surgery are classified as follows: (i) congenital cloudiness (e.g., congenital hereditary endothelial dystrophy--C

The clinical and detailed angiographical findings taken during the follow-up of 182 patients with tumors of the iris and the ciliary body reported. On the basis of different angiographic staining patterns, these tumors were divided into three groups. Group I: Clinically, as a rule darkly pigmented, slightly or nonprominent tumors, which do not take up fluorescein at all, i.e. no staining of the tumor of its surroundings during the whole angiogram. 107 patients with such a tumor type did not show any clinical or angiographical changes during several years of follow-up. Those tumors which were e

PURPOSE: To evaluate the use of ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in examining the status of anterior-segment structures in eyes with corneal opacification.
METHODS: Evaluation with UBM was performed between 1 and 2 weeks before surgery in 21 patients (21 eyes) with corneal opacities who were scheduled for penetrating keratoplasty. UBM findings were correlated with the findings noted during penetrating keratoplasty. The efficacy of UBM evaluation was calculated in terms of positive and negative predictive values (PPVs and NPVs) for the presence or absence of each finding.
RESULTS: Seventeen eye

The author considered the following important points:(1) Anterior capsular synechia to a corneal incision (made by a keratome) after the evacuation of a traumatic cataract. This might be detached early by the use of a blunt-ended knife following a perforation of the cornea with a sharp-pointed knife, much like a tenotome.(2) The involuntary prolapse of capsule with a cataract incision.(a) The danger of this was demonstrated as the cause of glaucoma, especially if it be found necessary to divide opaque capsular membrane after the extraction.(b) The danger of sympathetic ophthalmia.Prolapse migh

BACKGROUND: With the advent of targeted therapies, the survival prognosis for metastatic tumors has extended, and it has become necessary to diagnose and consider treatment that takes into account Quality of Life for metastatic tumors of the eye. The reports of checking tumor marker in the aqueous humor for diagnosis of metastatic intraocular tumors are few. Here, we report a case of masquerade syndrome with secondary glaucoma in which a high carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level in the aqueous humor could assist diagnosis, and continuing targeted therapy and trabeculectomy were effective.

INTRODUCTION: John Thomas Woolhouse (1666-1733/1734), who practiced in Paris, was part of a family with 5 generations of English oculists. Some historians have derided him as a "charlatan" and have criticized him for adhering to the old notion that a cataract was a membrane anterior to the lens.
METHODS: We reviewed treatises and digital records related to Woolhouse and his family and the handwritten notes of his 1721 lecture series at the Royal Society of Medicine.
RESULTS: We have identified 5 generations of oculists in Woolhouse's family, by the names of Atwood, Stepkins, Ivy, and Beaumon

BACKGROUND: Transplantation of autologous iris pigment epithelium (IPE) into the subretinal space has been suggested as one approach for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration, as well as for other conditions in which loss of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) occurs. Surgical removal of choroidal neovascular membranes is associated with traumatic loss of the RPE cell layer, disruption of the integrity of the photoreceptor-RPE complex, and limited visual outcome.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether IPE cells can substitute for RPE cells to be transplanted to the subretinal space of patient
