Genotype-phenotype correlation and expansion of orodental anomalies in LTBP3-related disorders.

The latent transforming growth factor-beta-binding protein 3 (LTBP3), encoding extracellular matrix proteins, plays a role in skeletal formation. Mutations in LTBP3 have been associated with various types of skeletal dysplasia. We aimed to characterize clinical and molecular features of more patients with mutations in the gene, which may help suggest genotype-phenotype correlation. The first two East Asian patients with short stature, heart defects, and orodental anomalies having LTBP3 mutations were identified. Whole exome and Sanger sequencing revealed that the one with a novel heterozygous

Plurimalformative syndrome associating trisomy 18 and omphalocele. Case report and review of the literature.

Trisomy 18 or Edwards syndrome is a rare chromosomal anomaly, associated with mild to severe intellectual disabilities and multiple congenital anomalies. Trisomies 18 and 13 are lethal, only 5-10% of patients surviving the first year of life. Although prenatal biological and ultrasound investigations are mandatory and free and the detection rate of chromosomal abnormalities is high, the birth of children with no real chance at a normal life being thus avoided by therapeutic abortion, the parents of the here presented child did not benefit from medical examination or prenatal tests, unfortunate

Systemic sclerosis. Case report and review of literature.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a heterogeneous rheumatic disease within the scleroderma spectrum of disorders. The systemic forms of scleroderma are most appropriately designated systemic sclerosis. Typical features of the disease include thickening of the skin (scleroderma) and damage to other organs, caused by excessive accumulation of collagen. SSc also affects oral and perioral tissues, the most common clinical manifestations being facial skin and tongue rigidity. The aim of this article is to describe, through presentation of a case report, oral manifestations of SSc and their consequences o

Craniodentofacial manifestations in Hallermann-Streiff syndrome.

Hallermann-Streiff syndrome (HSS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by significant craniofacial findings. Dyscephaly, microphthalmia, cataracts, hypotrichosis, cutaneous atrophy, thin pinched nose, and a typical bird-like face are the main features of the syndrome. Additional features of the syndrome include dental anomalies, micrognathia, skeletal defects, and short stature. What follows is a case report of a 10-year-old girl with HSS with special consideration on orodental findings. Clinical, radiographic, and cephalometric analysis revealed hypoplasia of the mandible, high arched

The oral implications of caustic soda ingestion in children.

The morbidity related to caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) ingestion is well described in the literature. The majority of publications have concentrated on the effects to the trachea and gastrointestinal tract, with little reference to the oral and peri-oral areas. Accidental ingestion of sodium hydroxide-containing substances is fortunately rare; however the consequences can be devastating. Three cases of children who drank caustic substances are described. Treatment included fitting splints, injecting steroids, local surgical procedures, and the use of dynamic appliances to maintain mouth open

Systemic sclerosis: description and diagnostic role of the oral phenomena.

This study was designed to describe and evaluate the eventual prodromic role of the orofacial phenomena encountered in patients suffering from systemic sclerosis. Phenomena preceding the diagnosis and events that occured at the onset of systemic sclerosis were considered. Sclerodermic patients were monitored to implement a secondary preventive plan for controlling oral injuries caused by developing systemic sclerosis.

A de-epithelialized free groin flap for facial contour restoration.

The transfer of de-epithelialized free groin flaps to restore facial contour after tumour resection and in hemifacial microsomia is described. The flap can be transferred in one stage and remodelled at a later minor operation. This provides an acceptable alternative to the other more difficult and often less successful methods of restoring soft tissue deficiencies of the face.

[Etoposide ameliorated refractory hemophagocytic syndrome in a patient with systemic sclerosis].

We successfully treated a 33-year-old woman with etoposide who developed systemic sclerosis (SSc)-associated refractory hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS). She had been diagnosed as SSc because she had had Raynaud's phenomenon, proximal scleroderma, telangiectasia, microstomia, thickening and shortening of lingual frenulum and positive antinuclear antibody since 1994. In September 1999, she showed high fever, anemia, thrombocytopenia, elevation of serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and ferritin levels and hemophagocytosis in her bone marrow, which led to the diagnosis of HPS. Her symptoms were impro

Orofacial findings and dental treatment in an 8-year-old patient with trisomy 18: a case report.

Trisomy 18 is characterized by: psychomotor disabilities, dysmorphic features, organ malformations, including mental retardation, growth deficiency, poor motor ability, micrognathia, microcephaly, congenital heart defects, and kidney abnormalities. The oral findings typically observed in these patients are: cleft lip and a high, narrow, and sometimes cleft palate. The degree of severity of the malformations is directly related to life expectancy. Only 5% to 10% of affected infants survive beyond the first year of life. Although trisomy 18 has been widely investigated from a medical standpoint,

Anthropometry of the face in lateral facial dysplasia: the unilateral form.

The skull, face and ears of 46 patients with the unilateral form of lateral facial dysplasia were examined at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, using anthropometric methods for the purpose of contributing to the morphology of this syndrome. The classical picture of unilateral facial asymmetry with microtia was found in 13 cases (28.3%). The study showed bilaterally defective mandibular arc measurements in 28 per cent of the cases. The facial damage was associated in 15 per cent with ears normal in size but defective in location, level, and shape. The anthropometric examination revealed

From Silicosis to Systemic Sclerosis: Erasmus Syndrome in a Young Galamseyer-Case Report.

Erasmus syndrome is an uncommon condition marked by the onset of systemic sclerosis (SSc) due to extended exposure to silica. In this case, we highlight the significant health risks associated with silica exposure in artisanal mining (galamsey), leading to the development of Erasmus syndrome. We present the case of a 33-year-old male artisanal miner with a 14-year work history who presented with a 2-year history of recurrent cough, difficulty breathing, and fever. He later developed hypopigmentation and skin thickening on his face, neck, torso, and knees, along with a productive cough and low-
