What can the psychoneuroimmunology of yoga teach us about depression's psychopathology?

Depression, the most prevailing mental health condition, remains untreated in over 30% of patients. This cluster presents with sub-clinical inflammation. Investigations trialling anti-inflammatory medications had mixed results. The lack of results may result from inflammation's complexity and targeting only a few of depression's abnormal pathways. Mind-body therapies' biological and neuro-imaging studies offer valuable insights into depression psychopathology. Interestingly, mind-body therapies, like yoga, reverse the aberrant pathways in depression. These aberrant pathways include decreased c

Dynamic Brain Activation and Connectivity in Elite Golfers During Distinct Golf Swing Phases: An fMRI Study.

Background/Purpose: Skilled motor performance depends on the action-observation networks (AONs), which supports the internal simulation of perceived movements. While expertise effects are well-documented in sports, neuroimaging evidence in golf is scarce, particularly on temporal dynamics across swing phases. This study examines how golf expertise modulates AON activation and functional connectivity during temporally distinct swing phases (pre-hitting vs. hitting) and assesses implications for predictive-coding models of motor skill. Methods: Fifty-seven participants (elite golfers: n = 28; co

Quantitative EEG Metrics for Determining HD-tDCS Induced Alteration of Brain Activity in Stroke Rehabilitation.

High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) is a promising approach for stroke rehabilitation, which may induce functional changes in the cortical sensorimotor areas to facilitate movement recovery. However, it lacks an objective measure that can indicate the effect of HD-tDCS on alteration of brain activity. Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) has shown promising results as an indicator of post-stroke functional recovery. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether qEEG metrics could serve as quantitative measures to assess alteration in brain activity induced

Brain stimulation in obesity.

Obesity is taking up epidemic proportions worldwide with significant impacts on the health of both the affected individual and on society as a whole. Treatment approaches consist of behavioural and pharmacological approaches, however, these are often found to be ineffective. In severe obesity, bariatric surgery is frequently performed. Unfortunately, 40% of patients show substantial weight gain over the long term or display the associated metabolic syndrome, making the development of novel therapies necessary. This review summarizes some of the current conceptual models, in particularly the 'f

Confuse your illusion: feedback to early visual cortex contributes to perceptual completion.

A striking example of the constructive nature of visual perception is how the human visual system completes contours of occluded objects. To date, it is unclear whether perceptual completion emerges during early stages of visual processing or whether higher-level mechanisms are necessary. To answer this question, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation to disrupt signaling in V1/V2 and in the lateral occipital (LO) area at different moments in time while participants performed a discrimination task involving a Kanizsa-type illusory figure. Results show that both V1/V2 and higher-level visual

Single-Session Video and Electromyography Feedback in Overhead Athletes With Scapular Dyskinesis and Impingement Syndrome.

CONTEXT: Subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) is associated with scapular dyskinesis, or imbalanced scapular muscle activity. Evidence has shown that feedback can improve scapular control in patients with SIS. However, it is unknown whether real-time video feedback or electromyography (EMG) biofeedback is optimal for improving scapular kinematics and muscle activity during a functional task. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of video and EMG feedback sessions on absolute muscle activity (upper trapezius [UT], lower trapezius [LT], serratus anterior), muscle balance ratios (UT/LT, UT/serratu

Electrophysiological correlates of reinforcement learning in young people with Tourette syndrome with and without co-occurring ADHD symptoms.

Altered reinforcement learning is implicated in the causes of Tourette syndrome (TS) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). TS and ADHD frequently co-occur but how this affects reinforcement learning has not been investigated. We examined the ability of young people with TS (n=18), TS+ADHD (N=17), ADHD (n=13) and typically developing controls (n=20) to learn and reverse stimulus-response (S-R) associations based on positive and negative reinforcement feedback. We used a 2 (TS-yes, TS-no)×2 (ADHD-yes, ADHD-no) factorial design to assess the effects of TS, ADHD, and their interacti

Upregulation of reward mesolimbic activity and immune response to vaccination: a randomized controlled trial.

Growing evidence points to a close neurophysiological link between brain and body. Recent rodent studies have shown that the dopaminergic mesolimbic pathway, which underlies expectations of positive outcomes, also modulates immune function. However, it remains unknown whether a similar brain-immune link exists in humans and whether it involves conscious positive expectations. In a preregistered, double-blind randomized controlled trial, we used fMRI neurofeedback (NF) to train healthy participants to increase reward mesolimbic activity through self-chosen mental strategies, followed by an immu

Adversarial robust EEG-based brain-computer interfaces using a hierarchical convolutional neural network.

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) based on electroencephalography (EEG) are widely used in motor rehabilitation, assistive communication, and neurofeedback due to their non-invasive nature and ability to decode movement-related neural activity. Recent advances in deep learning, particularly convolutional neural networks, have improved the accuracy of motor imagery (MI) and motor execution (ME) classification. However, EEG-based BCIs remain vulnerable to adversarial attacks, in which small, imperceptible perturbations can alter classifier predictions, posing risks in safety-critical applications

Markers of the maternal oxytocin system and mother-infant bonding during the first postpartum year.

BACKGROUND: The oxytocinergic system is central to early mother-infant bonding, yet, its epigenetic and hormonal dynamics during the postpartum period are not well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate genetic, epigenetic, and endogenous markers of the oxytocinergic system in relation to mother-infant bonding during the first year postpartum. METHOD: A sample of 66 mothers (mean age = 32.0 years, SD = 3.6 years) with bonding problems (N = 36) undergoing a neurofeedback intervention and control mothers (N = 30) participated in this longitudinal randomized clinical trial. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy in non-invasive neuromodulation.

Non-invasive cerebral neuromodulation technologies are essential for the reorganization of cerebral neural networks, which have been widely applied in the field of central neurological diseases, such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, and mental disorders. Although significant advances have been made in neuromodulation technologies, the identification of optimal neurostimulation parameters including the cortical target, duration, and inhibition or excitation pattern is still limited due to the lack of guidance for neural circuits. Moreover, the neural mechanism underlying neuromodulation for impr

Investigating Focal Connectivity Deficits in Alzheimer's Disease Using Directional Brain Networks Derived from Resting-State fMRI.

Connectivity analysis of resting-state fMRI has been widely used to identify biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) based on brain network aberrations. However, it is not straightforward to interpret such connectivity results since our understanding of brain functioning relies on regional properties (activations and morphometric changes) more than connections. Further, from an interventional standpoint, it is easier to modulate the activity of regions (using brain stimulation, neurofeedback, etc.) rather than connections. Therefore, we employed a novel approach for identifying focal directed c

Biofeedback for Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder in children: A pilot study of a multimodal approach of respiratory biofeedback to improve functional impact.

Defined as a complex syndrome combining attentional and behavioral difficulties, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a widespread condition affecting approximately 5.3% of children worldwide. Treatments mainly include psychotherapy and amphetamine derivative-based pharmacotherapy. Respiratory biofeedback may represent an additional, promising non-pharmacological approach for ADHD, in addition to neurofeedback, biofeedback's actual main application protocol based on cerebral activity. However, to date, there are few studies regarding other physiological rhythms, such as breathing
