The Effectiveness of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Treating Apraxia.

Apraxia can be detected when engaging in mental motor envisioning exercises. The nonverbal skills of manufacturing, representation, strategizing, arithmetic, visual sensitivity, and motor skills are all related to apraxia. Limb apraxia also negatively affects communication gestures and linguistic skills. The impairment of brain regions related to motion patterns is the primary cause of apraxia. People with apraxia may struggle to complete a variety of tasks because they are unable to focus on various movements. Apraxia can result from injury to the premotor cortex since it has a role in the le

Staff perspectives on barriers and enablers to implementing alternative source plasma eligibility criteria for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Canadian Blood Services introduced new eligibility criteria that allows some sexually active gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) to donate source plasma, marking a significant change from time-based deferral criteria. We aimed to identify potential barriers and enablers to implementing the new criteria from the perspective of donor center staff. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted Theoretical Domains Framework-informed interviews with staff from two source plasma donation centers in Canada. RESULTS: We completed 28 interviews between June 2020 and April

Loss of white matter connections after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and its relationship to social cognition.

Adults with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) often suffer poor social cognition. Social cognition is complex, requiring verbal, non-verbal, auditory, visual and affective input and integration. While damage to focal temporal and frontal areas has been implicated in disorders of social cognition after TBI, the role of white matter pathology has not been examined. In this study 17 adults with chronic, severe TBI and 17 control participants underwent structural MRI scans and Diffusion Tensor Imaging. The Awareness of Social Inference Test (TASIT) was used to assess their ability to understand

Gesture impairments in schizophrenia are linked to increased movement and prolonged motor planning and execution.

Schizophrenia patients present with a variety of impaired nonverbal communication skills. Performance of hand gestures is frequently impaired and associated with ratings of motor abnormalities. However, the impact of motor abnormalities to gesture performance remains unclear. To test the association between quantitative measures of motor behavior and qualitative ratings of gesture performance, we quantified movement parameters semi-automatically in videotaped recordings of gesture assessment. Thirty-one patients with schizophrenia (77.4%), schizophreniform (19.4%) or schizoaffective disorder (

Neural correlates of text-based emoticons: a preliminary fMRI study.

INTRODUCTION: Like nonverbal cues in oral interactions, text-based emoticons, which are textual portrayals of a writer's facial expressions, are commonly used in electronic device-mediated communication. Little is known, however, about how text-based emoticons are processed in the human brain. With this study, we investigated whether the text-based emoticons are processed as face expressions using fMRI. METHODS: During fMRI scan, subjects were asked to respond by pressing a button, indicating whether text-based emoticons represented positive or negative emotions. Voxel-wise analyses were perf

The facial nerve in the presence of a head and neck neoplasm: assessment and outcome after surgical management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The face is the mirror of personality. Facial expression is the most important part of verbal and nonverbal communication. Patients with head and neck neoplasm and facial palsy are more stigmatized by the latter than by the tumor itself. Facial nerve reconstruction in such a patient is a great challenge. This review gives an overview of the assessment of facial palsy, surgical reconstruction, and postoperative treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: MRI, CT, and electromyography are indispensable tools in the assessment of preoperative facial palsy in patients with head and neck neopla

The significance of ear plugging in localization-related epilepsy.

PURPOSE: The localizing value of ear plugging in the treatment of auditory onset partial seizures, to our knowledge, has not been previously described. We propose that ear plugging is a clinical response to a sensory seizure manifested as an auditory hallucination and a tool for identifying the seizure focus in the auditory cortex on the superior temporal gyrus. METHODS: We report on three children who had prior epilepsy surgery for recurrent symptomatic localization-related epilepsy and who, subsequent to their surgery, displayed stereotyped unilateral or bilateral ear plugging at the onset

The utility of telepsychology in health care: A qualitative exploration of psychologists' experiences from Oman.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, telepsychology has become a growing area of interest, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. The literature supports its role in overcoming barriers and enhancing access to mental care; however, its usage in maintaining therapy is yet to be explored in Oman. This study explored psychologists' experiences providing telepsychology, with a primary focus on the utility of this approach. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This qualitative study involved five psychologists who practice telepsychology in their daily clinics. Semistructured interviews were conducted to explore the experi

Acute psychogenic mutism following total hip arthroplasty under general anesthesia in an elderly patient: a case report.

Postoperative neuropsychiatric complications most commonly manifest as delirium or cognitive impairment; however, acute isolated mutism in the absence of frank delirium or structural brain injury-referred to in some literature as acute psychogenic mutism (APM)-represents an exceedingly rare and poorly understood postoperative phenomenon. This report presents a case of APM in a 69-year-old woman following elective total hip arthroplasty under general anesthesia. The patient developed acute selective aphonia upon emergence from anesthesia, despite preserved comprehension and nonverbal communicat

Sex Differences in Animal Models of Sodium-Valproate-Induced Autism in Postnatal BALB/c Mice: Whole-Brain Histoarchitecture and 5-HT2A Receptor Biomarker Evidence.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterised by problems with social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviour. In mice, the 14th postnatal day is believed to correspond to the third trimester of human embryonic development and is considered a vital period for central nervous system development. It has been shown that ASD affects 2 to 3 times more male than female individuals. In the present study, ASD was induced in 14 postnatal day (PND) BALB/c mice using valproic acid (VPA). VPA administration brought about substantial differences in the histoarchitecture o

The broad autism phenotype in real-life: clinical and functional correlates of autism spectrum symptoms and rumination among parents of patients with autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing literature reported higher rates of psychiatric disorders in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as of autistic-like features in social and cognitive functioning. However, little attention has been paid to the association between autistic traits (AT) and global functioning in this population. The aim of the present work was to investigate clinical and functional correlates of AT among parents of ASD children, with a specific focus on ruminative thinking. METHODS: One hundred and twenty parents of ASD children were assessed by the Structured C

Tuberculous peritonitis in a cerebral palsy patient: A challenge in diagnosis and management.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis (TBP) in a normal person, although possible, is often difficult to make because of its non-specific symptoms and signs. However, establishing a diagnosis of TBP in a patient with cerebral palsy (CP) does not seem to be possible due to impaired mental development accompanied by communication problems. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 19-year-old spastic man diagnosed with CP presented with fever and a nonverbal complaint of abdominal pain. The conditions were hard to evaluate due to his mental status. Abdominal radiography showed dilatation of both sma

Medical care of adolescents and women with Rett syndrome: an Italian study.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder, linked to MECP2 gene mutations in the majority of cases, which results in severe disability and is associated with several comorbidities. The clinical condition of RTT patients tends to stabilize over time, and prolonged survival has recently been demonstrated. However, limited information is available on the long-term course of older patients with RTT, especially among those in Southern Europe. The aim of our study is to evaluate the main clinical features and state of health of adult Italian patients with RTT and to present their evo

Clinical and genetic aspects of Angelman syndrome.

Angelman syndrome is characterized by severe developmental delay, speech impairment, gait ataxia and/or tremulousness of the limbs, and a unique behavioral phenotype that includes happy demeanor and excessive laughter. Microcephaly and seizures are common. Developmental delays are first noted at 3 to 6 months age, but the unique clinical features of the syndrome do not become manifest until after age 1 year. Management includes treatment of gastrointestinal symptoms, use of antiepileptic drugs for seizures, and provision of physical, occupational, and speech therapy with an emphasis on nonverb

Behavioral alterations in rats prenatally exposed to valproic acid: animal model of autism.

Autism is a severe behavioral disorder characterized by pervasive impairments in social interactions, deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication, and stereotyped, repetitive patterns of behaviors and interests. Recently, a new rodent model of autism was created by exposure of rat fetuses to valproic acid (VPA) on the 12.5th day of gestation (VPA rats). The model has striking anatomical, pathological, and etiological similarities to human data; however, it has not been characterized behaviorally. In order to determine if VPA rats present behavioral aberrations observed in autism, their beha

The amygdala is enlarged in children but not adolescents with autism; the hippocampus is enlarged at all ages.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in reciprocal social interaction, deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication, and a restricted repertoire of activities or interests. We performed a magnetic resonance imaging study to better define the neuropathology of autistic spectrum disorders. Here we report findings on the amygdala and the hippocampal formation. Borders of the amygdala, hippocampus, and cerebrum were defined, and their volumes were measured in male children (7.5-18.5 years of age) in four diagnostic groups: autism with mental retardation, autism wi

Autism and developmental receptive language disorder--a comparative follow-up in early adult life. I: Cognitive and language outcomes.

In this paper we compare adult outcome in a group of young men with autism and a group with developmental receptive language disorders. The two groups were first assessed in early childhood, when aged 7 to 8 years of age. Although matched at that time for nonverbal IQ (mean 92-93) and expressive language ability, the Autism group was significantly more impaired on most measures of social and communication skills and stereotyped behaviours. A later follow-up, in mid-childhood, suggested that although the groups were still quite distinct, social and behavioural problems had become more apparent

CONTEMPORARY CONCEPTS AND SURGICAL TECHNIQUES IN FACIAL REANIMATION: A SCOPING REVIEW.

Paralysis of the facial nerve represents an exceptional functional, social and cos- metic problem for the patient. Loss of function directly leads to the inability to protect the eyes, as well as oral competence, while indirectly affecting breathing and verbal communication. Patients often encounter social stigmatization and isolation, which is direct consequence of the loss of mimic function and disfiguration that is necessary for everyday nonverbal communication. Thus, the quality of life is strongly impaired, and patients are prone to developing depression. The primary goal of reanimation i
