A lipolytic activity was located in the sardine digestive glands (pyloric caeca), from which a sardine digestive lipase (SaDL) was purified. Pure SaDL has a molecular mass of 43 kDa as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis. The enzyme was found to be more active on short-chain triacylglycerols than on long-chain ones. SaDL does not present the interfacial activation phenomenon. Control experiments were performed under the same experimental conditions, with dromedary and turkey pancreatic lipases and showed a positive interfacial activation phenomenon.

Thymus capitatus is a widely utilized medicinal plant in Palestine. The main goal of this study was to assess the phytochemical content of T. capitatus essential oils (EOs) from three Palestinian regions using hydro-distillation. Furthermore, the EO extracted from the plant was subjected to biological tests. GC-MS spectrometry was used to identify and quantify the elements in the EOs examined. The DPPH assay and the β-carotene-linoleic acid assay were utilized to determine the levels of antioxidant activity. The plant's anti-lipase activity was carried out using a pancreatic lipase inhibition

Animal African Trypanosomiasis (AAT) is a debilitating livestock disease prevalent across sub-Saharan Africa, a main cause of which is the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma congolense. In comparison to the well-studied T. brucei, there is a major paucity of knowledge regarding the biology of T. congolense. Here, we use a combination of omics technologies and novel genetic tools to characterise core metabolism in T. congolense mammalian-infective bloodstream-form parasites, and test whether metabolic differences compared to T. brucei impact upon sensitivity to metabolic inhibition. Like the bloods

Obesity is a global pandemic that has been associated with the development of breast, endometrial, large intestine, renal, esophageal, and pancreatic cancer. Obesity is also involved in the development of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Recently, an increase in the incidence of obesity-related cancers has been reported. Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most common hematological malignancy, after lymphoma. The aim of this review is to examine the epidemiological data on obesity and MM, assess the effect of obesity on MM outcomes, evaluate the possible mechanisms through

Artemisia jordanica (AJ) is one of the folkloric medicinal plants and grows in the arid condition used by Palestinian Bedouins in the Al-Naqab desert for the treatment of diabetes and gastrointestinal infections. The current investigation aimed, for the first time, to characterize the (AJ) essential oil (EO) components and evaluate EO's antioxidant, anti-obesity, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic activities. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) technique was utilized to characterize the chemical ingredients of (AJ) EO, while validated biochemical approac

The prevalence of obesity has reached epidemic dimension in industrialized countries and it is known that obesity is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Commonly, obesity is defined by the Body Mass Index (BMI). However, BMI fails to consider body fat distribution. The relationship between the risk of metabolic-cardiovascular diseases and body fat distribution indices such as the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and the waist circumference, rather than measures of the degree of body fatness as expressed by BMI, has long been recognized. Recently, clinical and epid

This review evaluates the benefits and potential health risks of the currently used drugs that are approved for the pharmacological treatment of obesity. Analysis of several long term clinical trials indicates that all of these drugs are efficient in reducing excess bodyweight, and that the majority of them allow the maintenance of the reduced bodyweight for at least 1 year. However, the loss of bodyweight attributable to these drugs is in general rather modest, approaching only 0.2 kg per week during the first 6 months of treatment, and at least a partial regain of bodyweight occurs when thes

BACKGROUND: Obesity [defined as a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m(2)] represents a considerable public health problem and is associated with a significant range of comorbidities and an increased mortality risk. The primary aim of the management of obesity is to achieve weight reduction in the interests of health. For obese patients who cannot achieve or maintain a healthy weight by non-pharmacological means, drug therapy is recommended in combination with non-pharmacological interventions such as dietary modifications and exercise.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness and cost-ef

INTRODUCTION: Oxyntomodulin (OXM) is a gut hormone released from intestinal L cell. Synthetic OXM and its analog reduce food intake and body weight in both rodents and human beings by being administered intravenously. However, people find intravenous administration difficult because of its side effects and inconvenience. The aim of this study is to develop a novel oral delivery system for OXM and its analog using genetically engineered Bifidobacterium as the carrier.
METHODS: An OXM gene expression vector pBBADs-OXM for the Bifidobacterium genus was constructed. Human OXM sequence was fused w

A variety of treatments--behavior-modification programs, reduced-calorie diets, and pharmacotherapy--are available to treat obesity and can be effective in producing the 5% to 10% weight loss now recommended as a primary goal of therapy. The mechanisms of action of medication and behavior modification are different and complementary. Behavior therapy helps obese individuals to adopt a diet reduced in calories and fat and to increase daily physical activity; pharmacotherapy assists by modifying internal cues that control eating. Recent clinical studies indicate that combining these approaches i

BACKGROUND: Obesity affects over 40% of US adults, with severe obesity on the rise. Despite recognition of obesity as a chronic disease, it remains underdiagnosed and undertreated. Access to evidence-based obesity treatment is limited, leading to increased obesity severity and related complications. Barriers to obesity treatment include socioeconomic disparities, limited clinician training, stigma, and restrictive or absent reimbursement policies. FDA-approved obesity medications offer significant health benefits, prompting the need for updated, evidence-based guidance.
METHODS: The Obesity S

Obesity is a prevalent metabolic disorder characterized by excessive lipid accumulation. This study aimed to investigate the anti-obesity effects and underlying mechanisms of two triterpenoid saponin-rich extracts, designated disaccharide saponin-rich extract (DTS) and trisaccharide/tetrasaccharide saponin-rich extract (TTS), prepared from adzuki bean (Vigna angularis). In vitro, both DTS and TTS extracts significantly inhibited lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes without cytotoxicity, with TTS reducing lipid droplets to 21.45% of the model group at 200 μg/mL. In vivo, C57BL/6J mice were f

Obesity is considered the most concerning and blatantly visible--yet most neglected--public health problem by the WHO. The steadily increasing number of overweight and obese people has reached 2.3 billion and 700 million worldwide, respectively. Obesity is a complex condition, one that presents serious health risks with respect to type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and hypertension, therefore controlling the global obesity epidemic decreases not only health problems, but also expenditure. The underlying cause of obesity is a metabolic disorder of genetic, central nervous system or endocr

BACKGROUND: Diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (DMPM) is a rare and aggressive malignancy with limited therapeutic options and poor clinical outcomes. While metabolic reprogramming, including altered lipid metabolism, is a recognized hallmark of cancer, its contribution to DMPM progression and treatment response remains poorly understood.
METHODS: Gene expression profiling was performed on tumor samples from 45 DMPM patients treated with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS+HIPEC), comparing patients who developed recurrence within 30 months (N = 13)

This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity effects of bioactive compounds derived from Corchorus olitorius L., using a combined in vitro, in vivo, and in silico approach. The in vitro phase involved polyphenol extraction and antioxidant activity assays. The in vivo phase used a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity model in Wistar rats divided into four groups: standard diet (STD), high-fat diet (HFD), STD with C. olitorius extract (STD + C. olitorius), and HFD with C. olitorius extract (HFD + C. olitorius). Rats received a daily oral administration of C. o
