Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Pakistan: a decadal synthesis of biogeographical distribution, ecological determinants, and vectorial implications (2015-2025).

Leishmania parasites, which cause leishmaniasis-an extensive and growing public health concern in Pakistan-are only transmitted to humans by phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae). This systematic literature review provides an overview of existing entomological surveillance conducted from 2015 to 2025, using rigorous biogeographical and ecological methodologies to describe patterns of species distributions, habitat associations and vector dynamics across Pakistan's diverse landscapes. Our synthesis of data from 73 studies shows that 32 species have been recorded from both the Phlebotom

Eponymous Osseous Signs in Congenital Syphilis: A Narrative Historical Review.

The early origin of syphilis remains debated; bone involvement was recognized in early clinical accounts and described with increasing precision as pediatric pathology and radiography developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Many such observations entered medical usage through eponymous labels, yet these have not been examined as a coherent group. We reviewed the origins and early clinical descriptions of eponymous osseous signs of congenital syphilis between 1871 and 1928 and to outline their present-day relevance. A documentary review was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE

An imaging-based clinical prediction model to differentiate brucellar spondylitis from pyogenic spondylitis: a multicenter retrospective observational study.

PURPOSE: Differentiating between pyogenic (PS) and brucellar (BS) spondylitis is clinically challenging due to their similar clinical symptoms, with delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis common, causing trouble for surgeons in selecting appropriate treatment strategies. Currently, radiology-based diagnostic models for PS and BS are lacking. This study aimed to combine magnetic resonance (MR) and radiographic imaging to elucidate the differences between PS and BS and develop a novel diagnostic model for differential diagnosis. METHODS: We collected and analyzed the differences between MR and radio

Influence of management practice on the microbiota of a critically endangered species: a longitudinal study of kākāpō chick faeces and associated nest litter.

BACKGROUND: The critically endangered kākāpō is a flightless, nocturnal parrot endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand. Recent efforts to describe the gastrointestinal microbial community of this threatened herbivore revealed a low-diversity microbiota that is often dominated by Escherichia-Shigella bacteria. Given the importance of associated microbial communities to animal health, and increasing appreciation of their potential relevance to threatened species conservation, we sought to better understand the development of this unusual gut microbiota profile. To this end, we conducted a longitudinal a

A case of chlamydia psittaci caused severe pneumonia and meningitis diagnosed by metagenome next-generation sequencing and clinical analysis: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Psittacosis, which is also known as parrot fever, is Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) caused infectious disease. The clinical manifestations vary from asymptomatic infection to severe atypical pneumonia or even fatal meningitis. Early recognition of psittacosis is difficult because of its nonspecific clinical manifestations. Culture and gene probe techniques for C. psittaci are not available for routine clinical use, which makes the diagnosis difficult too. Although psittacosis has increasingly been recognized and reported in recent years, cure of severe pneumonia complicated with

Entomological Survey for the Detection of Sand Fly Fauna and Vector Species in the Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Endemic Area in East Mediterranean Region of Turkey, Mersin Province.

Cutaneous (CL) and visceral (VL) forms of leishmaniasis, transmitted by sand flies, are seen in all countries located in Mediterranean Basin including Turkey. In this study, we aimed to conduct an entomological survey for the detection of sand fly fauna and vector species in Mersin province, one of the important endemic areas for CL in Turkey. In total, 912 sand fly specimens were collected in 2010 and 2011 using CDC light traps. Nine Phlebotomus (Diptera: Psychodidae) and three Sergentomyia (Diptera: Psychodidae) species were detected. Of the collected Phlebotomus sand flies, P. sergenti Parr

Comparing the toepads of Australian diurnal and nocturnal raptors with nonpredatory taxa: Insights into functional morphology.

The ventral structures of the avian digits are the critical interface between a bird and the item within its grasp (e.g., prey, landing substrate, or object), and as such are vital for ensuring the hunting success and survival of predatory birds. Here, we present the first descriptive analysis of the ventral structures of the toes, toepad morphology, and toepad surface area of several diurnal (Accipitriformes and Falconiformes) and nocturnal species (Strigiformes) of Australian raptors. We compare these with nonpredatory taxa (passeriform and psittaciform) to elucidate possible functional expl

Aspects of the bionomics of Phlebotomus sergenti sandflies from an endemic area of anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in Aleppo Governorate, Syria.

Aspects of the bionomics of phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) were studied from June to November 2005 in three foci of anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) in Aleppo Governorate, Syria, where the agent Leishmania tropica (Wright) (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) is transmitted by Phlebotomus sergenti Parrot. Syria has been designated by the World Health Organization as one of four countries in the Old World where cutaneous leishmaniasis is hyperendemic, but little is known about the biology of local vector populations. Standard collections by sticky traps showed two peaks

Innovation and discovery: the application of nucleic acid-based technology to avian virus detection and characterization.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based approaches to the detection, differentiation and characterization of avian pathogens continue to be developed and refined. The PCRs, or reverse transcriptase-PCRs, may be general, designed to detect all or most variants of a pathogen, or to be serotype, genotype or pathotype specific. Progress is being made with respect to making nucleic acid approaches more suitable for use in diagnostic laboratories. Robotic workstations are now available for extraction of nucleic acid from many samples in a short time, for routine diagnosis. Following general PCR, the D

Multi locus sequence typing of Chlamydia reveals an association between Chlamydia psittaci genotypes and host species.

Chlamydia comprises a group of obligate intracellular bacterial parasites responsible for a variety of diseases in humans and animals, including several zoonoses. Chlamydia trachomatis causes diseases such as trachoma, urogenital infection and lymphogranuloma venereum with severe morbidity. Chlamydia pneumoniae is a common cause of community-acquired respiratory tract infections. Chlamydia psittaci, causing zoonotic pneumonia in humans, is usually hosted by birds, while Chlamydia abortus, causing abortion and fetal death in mammals, including humans, is mainly hosted by goats and sheep. We use

Fulminant psittacosis requiring mechanical ventilation and demonstrating serological cross-reactivity between Legionella longbeachae and Chlamydia psittaci.

Chlamydia psittaci infection typically causes a mild respiratory illness in humans. Severe respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation or intensive care therapy is an uncommon development. The aetiological agents causing severe community acquired pneumonia often remain undetermined. Serological tests may aid in diagnosis. We present two cases of fulminant psittacosis, one demonstrating early cross-reactivity with Legionella longbeachae.

Application of BALF combined with tNGS for detecting Chlamydia psittaci in resource-limited areas: lessons learned from the 2025 temporally associated case series investigation.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia psittaci (Cps) is a neglected zoonotic cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and its incidence may be underestimated in county-level hospitals lacking rapid diagnostic tools. We evaluated the potential utility of targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) for early Cps detection during a small group of temporally associated cases in rural southwestern China. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed four nonsevere Cps pneumonia patients admitted to Dafang County People's Hospital between April 19 and May 6, 2025. Epidemiological e

Dynamic evolution of base composition: causes and consequences in avian phylogenomics.

Resolving the phylogenetic relationships among birds is a classical problem in systematics, and this is particularly so when it comes to understanding the relationships among Neoaves. Previous phylogenetic inference of birds has been limited to mitochondrial genomes or a few nuclear genes. Here, we apply deep brain transcriptome sequencing of nine bird species (several passerines, hummingbirds, dove, parrot, and emu), using next-generation sequencing technology to understand features of transcriptome evolution in birds and how this affects phylogenetic inference, and combine with data from two

International trade of CITES listed bird species in China.

Commercial trade of wild birds may devastate wild bird populations. Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) controls the trade of wild species listed in its appendices to avoid these species being threatened by international trade. China used to be one of the major trading countries with significant bird trade with foreign countries; on the other hand, China is a country with unique avian fauna, many Important Bird Areas and critically endangered bird species. What is the role of the country in world wild bird trade? What kind of insights can we

Semen collection, semen analysis and artificial insemination in the kākāpō (Strigops habroptilus) to support its conservation.

The critically endangered kākāpō (Strigops habroptilus) has suffered population declines due to habitat loss, hunting, and predation. Conservation efforts, including translocation to predator-free islands, have helped increase numbers of this flightless parrot from 51 individuals in 1995-142 in 2019. However, low fertility and high embryo mortality, likely due to genetic bottlenecks continue to hinder population growth. This is further aggravated by the kākāpō's lek mating system, which allows only a minority of males to father a disproportionate number of offspring, resulting in 21% of non-re

Prevalence and Genotyping of Chlamydia psittaci from Domestic Waterfowl, Companion Birds, and Wild Birds in Taiwan.

Chlamydia psittaci, the causative agent of avian chlamydiosis, an important zoonotic disease, infects a wide range of birds. Infected birds, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic, intermittently shed the agent through respiratory and intestinal routes. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the epizootiology of C. psittaci in poultry, pet birds, and wild birds. In this study, cloacal or fecal swabs collected from domestic waterfowl, psittacine birds, Columbidae, and wild birds were used to determine the prevalence of C. psittaci in Taiwan between 2014 and 2017. The C. psittaci infection rate
