Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety and depressive symptoms in Brazilian emerging adults: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depressive disorders are highly prevalent in Brazil, with higher vulnerability among young adults. Despite the high prevalence, Brazil faces significant challenges in its mental health care system, with only a minority receiving treatment. Tailored internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) offers a promising strategy to address this treatment versus demand gap. This study examines the efficacy of individually tailored ICBT intervention with on-demand support for reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms in young adults. METHODS: This two-arm randomized cont

Diagnostic, clinical, and personality correlates of food anxiety during a food exposure in patients diagnosed with an eating disorder.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are characterized by high levels of anxiety, especially while eating. However, little is known about anxiety experienced during meals and specifically what other variables may impact such anxiety. OBJECTIVE: We sought to further quantify and understand the relationship between food anxiety, eating disorders, and related correlates (e.g., comorbid diagnoses, personality). METHODS: In the current study [N = 42 participants diagnosed with an eating disorder (n = 36 participants with anorexia nervosa)], we quantified anxiety before, during, and after a meal using dat

Observer Ratings of Leader Empathy, Openness, and Perceptiveness: The Impact of Timing on Group Climate.

The current study explored observer rated leadership empathy, perceptiveness, and openness, session number, and their associations with group climate during a 12-week group therapy randomized controlled trial (RCT) to treat perfectionism. Seventy group members from ten psychodynamic-interpersonal psychotherapy groups completed the Group Climate Questionnaire at the third and ninth treatment sessions and trained observers rated the co-leaders' empathy, perceptiveness, and openness at the second and sixth treatment sessions. Higher combined leader perceptiveness was positively associated with gr

Development of a scale for measuring orthosomnia: the Bergen Orthosomnia Scale (BOS).

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to extend the knowledge about orthosomnia, that is, excessive preoccupation with sleep, by developing a scale for its assessment. METHODS: In Study 1, an initial item pool was presented to 34 sleep experts for assessment using the Delphi method. In Study 2, relevant items were administered to 994 survey respondents (mean age = 42 years, SD = 13.2) for exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Two factors were retained, reflecting "interference" and "rigidity," each comprising six items. In Study 3, the scale was validated against multiple validated instrumen

The association between different types of childhood trauma and orthorexia nervosa: an observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is characterized by the pursuit of perfect eating, leading to severe physical, psychological, and social problems. Although not yet formally recognized as an official diagnosis, ON shares etiological factors with traditional eating disorders, such as adverse childhood experiences (CT). This study explores the association between different CT types and ON, a relationship scarcely investigated in the literature. METHODS: A sample of 175 participants (age 18-74 years, M = 44.10; SD = 12.85) completed the Italian Düsseldorf Orthorexia Scale (I-DOS) and the Child

Effects of Appearance- and Performance-Enhancing Drugs on Personality Traits.

Appearance- and performance-enhancing drugs (APEDs) are commonly used by adolescents and young adults in an effort to improve not only athletic performance but also physical and mental efficiency and sexual appearance. The rationale for using these drugs is grounded in the perceived importance of external appearance, the quest for health and youth, and the urge to boost one's sexual performances. Although APED users tend to be quite moderate overall, some specific subpopulations can display pathological use associated with high-risk behaviors. A wide and diverse range of APEDs is now easily ac

Examining the generality and specificity of gender moderation in obsessive compulsive beliefs: Stacked prediction by correspondence analysis.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we examined the degree of generality and specificity of OC beliefs are moderated by gender among individuals with OC disorders. METHODS: The diagnostic groups consisted of: (1) individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; N = 398); (2) individuals with other anxiety disorders (N = 104); and (3) undergraduate students (N = 285). To evaluate the gender moderating effect, we employed stacked prediction by correspondence analysis (CA). To conduct the analysis, we generated a two-way contingency table with rows of gender nested within the diagnostic groups and co

Obsessive Beliefs and Clinical Features in Patients with Comorbid Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are two common neuropsychiatric conditions. Obsessive beliefs, comprising the importance and control of intrusive thoughts, inflated sense of responsibility for harm, overestimations of threat, perfectionism, and intolerance of uncertainty have been suggested to influence OCD symptomatology. Although OCD patients with ADHD have been reported to have different clinical characteristics compared to patients with OCD without ADHD, it has not been previously investigated whether OCD patients with and

Attenuated neuronal and autonomic responses during error processing in anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychiatric illness with alarming mortality rates. Nevertheless, despite former and recent research results, the etiology of AN is still poorly understood. Of particular interest is that, despite exaggerated response control and increased perfectionism scores, patients with AN seem not to perform better that those unaffected in tasks that require inhibitory control. One reason might be aberrant processing of errors. The objective of our study was thus to obtain further insight into the pathopsychology of AN. We were particularly interested in neu

Which passengers are on your bus? A taxonomy of the barriers adolescents with chronic pain face in achieving functional recovery.

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment (IIPT) is effective in facilitating functional recovery in adolescents with chronic pain, engagement with IIPT is suboptimal among adolescents. A key aspect of IIPT is to support functional recovery via (re)engagement with age-appropriate daily activities. The aim of this study was to gain a comprehensive insight into adolescents' perceptions of the barriers they need to overcome to engage with age-appropriate activities in order to achieve functional recovery. METHODS: Forty-one adolescents who were starting an IIPT

Long-term outcomes in treated males with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa-A prospective, gender-matched study.

OBJECTIVE: We report on the long-term outcome of males compared to females treated for anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN). METHODS: A total of 119 males with AN and 60 males with BN were reassessed 5.8 ± 4.6 and 7.5 ± 5.9 years (respectively) after treatment and compared to matched female patients. RESULTS: At follow-up, males with AN had a higher body weight than females. For AN, remission rates (40% males vs. 41% females) did not differ at follow-up. And at follow-up, more males (34%) than females (19%) had an eating disorder not otherwise specified (ED-NOS; p < .01). At follow-

Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy for bulimia nervosa: a controlled study.

The object of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an Internet-based therapy (IBT) for bulimia nervosa (BN) as compared to a waiting list (WL). Sixty-two female BN patients, diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria, were assigned to either the IBT or a WL. The control participants (WL) were matched to the IBT group in terms of age, duration of the disorder, number of previous treatments, and severity of the disorder. Assessment measures included the EDI, SCL-90-R, BITE, the TCI-R, and other clinical and psychopathological indices, which were administrated before and after the treatment

The Beliefs about Emotions Scale: validity, reliability and sensitivity to change.

OBJECTIVE: Beliefs about the unacceptability of experiencing or expressing negative emotions have been noted in individuals with a range of problems, including chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), irritable bowel syndrome, somatization disorder, depression, eating disorders, social phobia, posttraumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder. These beliefs are likely to have implications for emotion regulation and processing, and are addressed explicitly or implicitly within many therapies including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), and Acce

Dual psychiatric diagnosis and substance abuse in pathological gamblers: a preliminary gender comparison study.

BACKGROUND: Pathological Gambling (PG) is a highly prevalent and disabling impulse control disorder. Recent studies have consistently shown that PG patients have responded well to treatment with SSRI's, mood stabilizers, and opioid antagonists. These findings have supported the observation that PG is strongly associated with both mood and anxiety disorders as well as substance abuse. The aim of the study is to evaluate the comorbid psychiatric diagnoses in our sample. METHODS: Thirty-six female, and forty-two male PG's were enrolled in our study. Laxative abuse among women with eating disorders: an indication of psychopathology?

OBJECTIVE: The results of the scant research on laxative abuse among women with eating disorders suggest that laxative abuse is a diagnostic indicator of greater psychopathology. We further investigated the relationship of history of laxative abuse to eating and related attitudes, impulsivity, and personality pathology. METHOD: Women assessed in an outpatient clinical setting and diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, binge-eating/purging type (n = 51) or bulimia nervosa, purging type (n = 280) completed measures of laxative abuse, eating and related attitudes, and personality psychopathology at in

From Clinic to Real Life: Speech-Language Therapists' Perspectives on Extratherapy Generalization in Children With Cleft Palate.

PURPOSE: Extratherapy generalization, defined as the transfer of sounds learned in the training environment to spontaneous speech outside the clinical setting, is a crucial yet underexplored facet of speech therapy in children with a cleft palate with or without a cleft lip (CP ± L). This study aimed to explore how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) experience and structure treatment activities to achieve extratherapy generalization in this population. METHOD: Fourteen SLPs, aged between 29 and 49 years, were included. They all worked in a first-line health care setting and had their own pri
