The anatomical foundations of acquired reading disorders: a neuropsychological verification of the dual-route model of reading.

In this study we investigated the neural correlates of acquired reading disorders through an anatomo-correlative procedure of the lesions of 59 focal brain damaged patients suffering from acquired surface, phonological, deep, undifferentiated dyslexia and pure alexia. Two reading tasks, one of words and nonwords and one of words with unpredictable stress position, were used for this study. We found that surface dyslexia was predominantly associated with left temporal lesions, while in phonological dyslexia the lesions overlapped in the left insula and the left inferior frontal gyrus (pars oper

Phonological characteristics of novel gesture production in children with developmental language disorder: Longitudinal findings.

Children with developmental language disorder (DLD; aka specific language impairment) are characterized based on deficits in language, especially morphosyntax, in the absence of other explanatory conditions. However, deficits in speech production, as well as fine and gross motor skill, have also been observed, implicating both the linguistic and motor systems. Situated at the intersection of these domains, and providing insight into both, is manual gesture. In the current work, we asked whether children with DLD showed phonological deficits in the production of novel gestures and whether gestu

Receptive prosody in nonfluent primary progressive aphasias.

INTRODUCTION: Prosody has been little studied in the primary progressive aphasias (PPAs), a group of neurodegenerative disorders presenting with progressive language impairment. METHODS: Here we conducted a systematic investigation of different dimensions of prosody processing (acoustic, linguistic and emotional) in a cohort of 19 patients with nonfluent PPA syndromes (11 with progressive nonfluent aphasia, PNFA; five with progressive logopenic/phonological aphasia, LPA; three with progranulin-associated aphasia, GRN-PPA) compared with a group of healthy older controls. Exploring Concepts of Understanding in the Working Practice of Speech and Language Therapists in the UK: A Preliminary Survey.

BACKGROUND: All communication involves the expression and the reception of information, both of which are considered by speech and language therapists (SLTs) when assessing and planning intervention for language difficulties. Comprehension, or understanding, has to be inferred, whereas expressive behaviours are directly observable. Possibly because of the level of inference, views and assessments of a person's understanding often vary: between different practitioners, professionals, family members and carers. The aim of the research was to examine how and why such different perspectives occur

Reading fluency in Spanish patients with Parkinson's disease: A reading prosody examination.

BACKGROUND: The expressiveness during reading is essential for a fluent reading. Reading prosody has been scarcely studied in an experimental manner, owing to the difficulties in taking objective and direct measures of this reading skill. However, new technologies development has made it possible to analyse reading prosody in an experimental way. Prosodic patterns may vary, not being the same at the beginning of the reading learning process as in adulthood. They may also be altered in disorders such as dyslexia, but little is known about the prosodic characteristics and reading fluency of peop

Perhaps correlational but not causal: no effect of dyslexic readers' magnocellular system on their eye movements during reading.

During reading, dyslexic readers exhibit more and longer fixations and a higher percentage of regressions than normal readers. It is still a matter of debate, whether these divergent eye movement patterns of dyslexic readers reflect an underlying problem in word processing or whether they are - as the proponents of the magnocellular deficit hypothesis claim - associated with deficient visual perception that is causal for dyslexia. To overcome problems in the empirical linkage of the magnocellular theory with reading, a string processing task is presented that poses similar demands on visual pe

Prosodic skills in Spanish-speaking adolescents and young adults with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder of genetic origin with a cognitive-behavioural profile that distinguishes it from other syndromes. Within this profile, language difficulties are particularly marked, having been more studied in childhood than in adulthood. More generally, there is a paucity of research on the prosodic skills of individuals with DS, despite the relevance of this linguistic component for effective communication. AIMS: This study aimed to analyse, for the first time, the prosodic profile of Spanish-speaking teenagers and young adults with DS. We hy

The Impact of Scaffolding on Academic Achievement in Undergraduate Emergency Language Courses.

The COVID-19 epidemic as a global public health emergency has brought unprecedented attention to emergency languages. Emergency language proficiency is an essential component of national language proficiency, making the development of emergency language service personnel particularly important. Therefore, in this study, 225 students of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages at a Chinese university were invited to participate in a 8-week quasi-experimental design of a control group (traditional teaching) and an experimental group (scaffolded instruction) to conduct an emergency languag

Enhancing Pragmatic Communication in Healthy Aging: A Preliminary Investigation of the Long-Term Effects of the Advanced Cognitive Pragmatic Treatment.

The aging process is associated with changes in cognitive and communicative skills, including pragmatic one, the ability to appropriately use language and other expressive means in social contexts. Despite its importance for quality of life and autonomy, the decline of pragmatic ability has received little attention in aging research and intervention. This preliminary study aims to investigate the efficacy and specificity of the Advanced Cognitive Pragmatic Treatment (Advanced-CPT), a novel training program designed to improve pragmatic performance in healthy older adults by targeting differen

Development and Validation of a Measure of Undergraduate Students' English Writing Motivation in Chinese Universities.

Prior second language writing motivation research tends to view writing motivation as a unidimensional construct or fails to represent the latest theoretical insights in motivational research. This study therefore aimed to validate the English as a Foreign Language Writing Motivation Questionnaire (EFL-WMQ) designed to capture the multidimensionality of EFL writing motivation from multiple theoretical perspectives. A secondary aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between EFL-WMQ dimensions and English writing performance. Data were collected from two independent samples of un

The Contribution of Executive Functions to Spelling: A study in L1 Arabic and English as a Foreign Language.

Executive Functions (EFs) are known to play a role in academic performance, especially in reading and mathematics, but their role in spelling is not clear and has received scant research attention. The present study targets this gap in the literature and examines the contribution of EFs to spelling beyond phonological awareness (PA). It broadens the perspective by concomitantly examining spelling in L1 Arabic and in English as a foreign language. Measures of EFs (working memory, inhibition, and shifting), Arabic and English PA, and Arabic and English spelling were administered to a sample of 8

Assessment Practices for Developmental Dyslexia in Morocco: An Exploratory Survey of Speech-Language Pathologists and Perspectives for an Arabic-Specific Battery.

In the bilingual educational context of Morocco, where Arabic and French coexist, the assessment of developmental dyslexia poses specific methodological challenges. This exploratory study aims to document the current practices of Moroccan speech-language pathologists in the diagnosis and screening of reading disorders. A questionnaire was distributed to 45 practitioners across various regions of the country. Data analysis highlights a predominant reliance on standardized French-language tests combined with clinician-designed protocols. The near-total absence of standardized tools in Arabic is

On the Linguistic and Cognitive Factors that Predict Reading Abilities Among Arabic-Speaking University Students.

While research on the predictors of reading and reading comprehension is extensive in child and in some adult populations, particularly in alphabetic languages, few studies have examined such factors among Arabic-speaking adults. This study examined the extent to which the same linguistic and cognitive predictors contribute to reading accuracy, rate and comprehension among university students. A total of 120 young adults (aged 18–32) completed a battery of tests to examine their reading skills, phonological awareness (PA), rapid automatized naming (RAN), morphological knowledge, executive func

Spelling Errors of Dyslexic Children in Bosnian Cyrillic and Latin Script.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, two scripts are in use, which gave us the possibility to investigate the influence of visual characteristics of scripts on the manifestation of spelling errors in persons with dyslexia. The purpose of this study was to explore the nature of spelling errors made by children with dyslexia in two different scripts of the single language, Latin and Cyrillic. The most frequent spelling errors in reading in both scripts on most tasks were phonological errors. Although Bosnian is a language with rich morphological forms, children with dyslexia did not show a lack of knowled

Evaluating Phonological Short-Term Memory in Children with SLI: A Comparative Analysis of Serial Order, Item Information and Nonword Repetition Tasks.

Nonword repetition (NWR) and related verbal short-term memory (STM) tasks are widely used to characterise cognitive deficits in children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI). However, growing evidence suggests that performance on these tasks reflects not only memory processes but also the contribution of linguistic representations, raising questions about their interpretation as measures of phonological STM. The present study examined STM performance in Cantonese-speaking children with SLI (n = 18) and age-matched typically developing peers (n = 18) using three tasks: nonword repetition, se

The Impact of Arabic Diglossia on Social-Emotional Skills in the Fifth and Seventh Grades.

This study examined the impact of Arabic diglossia on children's emotional intelligence, emotional intensity, and emotions identification. The participants were 250 Israeli Arabic-speaking children in the fifth and seventh grades, all native speakers of Palestinian Arabic. Children were examined for their Trait Emotional Intelligence (EI) performance, emotional intensity perception, and identifying feelings of episodes in spoken Arabic (SpA) and standard Arabic (StA). Findings revealed an advantage in Trait Emotional Intelligence in SpA compared to StA across ages, suggesting that the spoken f

The Effects of Bilingualism on the Executive Control Abilities of the Prader-Willi Syndrome Population.

Unlike with the typically developing population, non-typically developing individuals, especially those with intellectual disabilities, have usually been recommended to learn and use only one language, despite perhaps coming from bilingual families or living in multilingual environments. This common practice, however, is not backed by empirical evidence; previous research, although limited, has systematically shown that bilingualism does not have negative effects. This study investigates how bilingualism shapes the executive control abilities of individuals with genetic disorders. Specifically

Time-Varying Neural Oscillations Underlying the Foreign-Language Effect on Risk-Taking.

Based on previous literature about foreign-language effects on decision-making, we measured neural oscillations involved in valenced feedback encoding and subsequent gambling process in native (Chinese) and foreign (English) languages. Results showed that gambling outcomes, notably positive outcomes, presented in English relative to Chinese increased alpha suppression, suggesting more attentional resources required in foreign-language processing. In the subsequent gambling process, theta synchronization decreased following positive feedback in English relative to that in Chinese, suggesting re

Reading Comprehension in the Arabic Diglossia: The SVR Between the Spoken and Literary Varieties.

This study aimed to examine the validity of the "simple view of reading" (SVR) model in the diglossic Arabic language. Using a longitudinal design, we tested whether decoding and listening comprehension (LC) in kindergarten can later predict reading comprehension (RC) in the first grade and whether the contribution of LC to RC differs between the spoken and literary varieties of Arabic. The participants were 261 kindergartners who were followed to the first grade. Our results from separate SEM analysis for the spoken and literary varieties revealed some similarity between the explained varianc

The impact of Diglossia-Effect on Reading Acquisition Among Arabic-Speaking Children: A Longitudinal Study.

Arabic is a diglossic language, where two language varieties are used: spoken Arabic (SpA) and standard Arabic (StA). The words may be "identical" (maintaining the same phonological expression in the SpA and StA) or "unique" to StA). This study examined the effect of diglossia on reading according to the lexical distance between the SpA and StA forms and whether this influence changes with age. The participants were 137 first-graders that were followed to the second grade. The findings indicated a significant effect of grade level with higher performance in the second grade.
