ECOLOGICAL DETERMINANTS OF AVIAN INFLUENZA VIRUS, WEST NILE VIRUS, AND AVIAN PARAMYXOVIRUS INFECTION AND ANTIBODY STATUS IN BLUE-WINGED TEAL (ANAS DISCORS) IN THE CANADIAN PRAIRIES.

The Canadian prairies are one of the most important breeding and staging areas for migratory waterfowl in North America. Hundreds of thousands of waterfowl of numerous species from multiple flyways converge in and disperse from this region annually; therefore this region may be a key area for potential intra- and interspecific spread of infectious pathogens among migratory waterfowl in the Americas. Using Blue-winged Teal (Anas discors, BWTE), which have the most extensive migratory range among waterfowl species, we investigated ecologic risk factors for infection and antibody status to avian

Stabilizing Dog Populations and Improving Animal and Public Health Through a Participatory Approach in Indigenous Communities.

Free-roaming dog populations are a global concern for animal and human health including transmission of infectious disease (e.g. rabies, distemper and parasites), dog bite injuries/mortalities, animal welfare and adverse effects on wildlife. In Saskatchewan (SK), Canada, veterinary care is difficult to access in the remote and sparsely inhabited northern half of the province, where the population is predominately Indigenous. Even where veterinary clinics are readily available, there are important barriers such as cost, lack of transportation, unique cultural perspectives on dog husbandry and p

Increased use of acid-suppressing drugs before the occurrence of ischemic events: a potential source of confounding in recent observational studies.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine if the use of acid-suppressing drugs is increased before the occurrence of ischemic events. DESIGN: Population-based, nested case-control analysis. DATA SOURCE: Administrative databases in Saskatchewan, Canada. PATIENTS: Cases were 1612 patients (aged ≥ 40 yrs) who started a first-ever antihypertensive drug between January 1, 1994, and December 31, 2003, and were hospitalized for a first ischemic heart event of either myocardial infarction (1002 patients) or unstable angina (610 patients); five control patients were matched to each case patient by age, sex, and

Effect of influenza vaccination of children on infection rates in Hutterite communities: a randomized trial.

CONTEXT: Children and adolescents appear to play an important role in the transmission of influenza. Selectively vaccinating youngsters against influenza may interrupt virus transmission and protect those not immunized. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether vaccinating children and adolescents with inactivated influenza vaccine could prevent influenza in other community members. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A cluster randomized trial involving 947 Canadian children and adolescents aged 36 months to 15 years who received study vaccine and 2326 community members who did not receive the study vacc

In-hospital outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention in Canada: 1992/93 to 2000/01.

BACKGROUND: Despite existing research on outcomes of cardiac care in Canada, little is known about Canada-wide trends and interprovincial differences in outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). OBJECTIVES: To examine Canadian trends in rates of in-hospital mortality and same-admission coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) after PCI and to compare provincial risk-adjusted in-hospital death and same-admission CABG rates. METHODS: Hospital discharge abstract data were obtained from the Canadian Institute for Health Information and were used to identify cohorts of patients who u

Waiting times from abnormal breast screen to diagnosis in 7 Canadian provinces.

BACKGROUND: Delay to breast cancer diagnosis following an abnormal screening result is associated with anxiety and personal disruption. We assessed the patterns and timeliness of diagnostic follow-up after breast cancer screening for women with abnormal results who attended organized screening programs in 7 provinces. METHODS: Using data from the Canadian Breast Cancer Screening Database, we identified 203,141 women aged 50-69 years who underwent screening in 1996 through provincially organized breast cancer screening programs in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Nov

Neurocognitive Function and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder in Offenders with Mental Disorders.

Individuals with a history of offending behavior show high rates of mental disorder as well as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Neurocognitive impairments are common in both mental disorders and FASD and may interface with offending behavior. Understanding these impairments could effectively inform clinical considerations among this population. The purpose of this study was to characterize the life experiences and examine the neurocognitive profile of a group of adult forensic psychiatric outpatients. We also investigated potential differences between offenders with FASD and the rest of

Root surface caries prevalence and associated factors among adult patients in an acute care hospital.

There have been many studies reporting on the prevalence of root surface caries in elderly populations, but there is little consistency in these reports concerning the associated risk factors. In the present study, intraoral examinations were carried out on adult patients (age range 22 to 91 years, mean age 57.9) on the acute care wards of a teaching hospital. Of the 103 patients examined, 23.3% exhibited carious lesions on root surfaces, these lesions occurring more frequently in males than in females, and more frequently in the 60 years and older age groups. Forty-five per cent of all root l

Realist evaluation of maternity waiting home intervention models in Inhambane, Mozambique: protocol for a comparative embedded case study, the Mozambique-Canada Maternal Health Project.

INTRODUCTION: This is a study protocol that tests and refines realist theories regarding the uptake and scale-up of the linked maternity waiting home (hereafter MWH) and facility birth intervention in the Mozambican context. The theories were developed through a realist review of MWH-facility birth literature from low-income and middle-income countries. The aim of the proposed study is to contribute to a contextually refined understanding of the causal chains underlying MWH-facility birth adoption by pregnant women and their families, communities, the health system and donors. METHODS AND ANA

Results of routine patch testing of 542 patients in Saskatoon, Canada.

542 patients (330 women, 212 men) with suspected allergic contact dermatitis were patch tested to standard series allergens between January 1983 and June 1987. Positive reactions were most frequently seen with nickel (17.4%), ethylenediamine (8.7%), formaldehyde (7.4%), colophony (7.0%), potassium dichromate (6.1%) and neomycin (5.7%). Patients with dermatitis involving the legs were significantly more likely to be allergic to ethylenediamine (p = 0.01) and benzocaine (p = 0.04) than those with dermatitis not involving the legs. Neomycin allergy was not associated with dermatitis involving the

Walking Stability During Normal Walking and Its Association with Slip Intensity Among Individuals with Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Ambulatory individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) experience frequent falls suggesting impairments in their balance control. Individuals with iSCI are more stable during normal walking as compared to able-bodied (AB) individuals; however, it is not known whether this increased stability helps prevent hazardous slips. OBJECTIVE: To compare walking stability during normal walking between iSCI and AB individuals, and to study the association between stability during normal walking and the intensity of an unexpected slip perturbation. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING:

Factors associated with social casino gaming among adolescents across game types.

BACKGROUND: With the proliferation of social casino games (SCGs) online, which offer the opportunity to gamble without monetary gains and losses, comes a growing concern regarding the effects of these unregulated games on public health, particularly among adolescents. However, given the limited research pertaining to SCG use, little is currently known about the manner in which adolescents engage with this new gambling medium. The present study aims to identify the factors that characterize adolescent social casino gamers, and to determine whether these factors differ by SCG type. Moreover, the
