Effects of Breeding for Short-Tailedness in Sheep on Parameters of Reproduction and Lamb Development.

BACKGROUND: Sheep's tail docking is a widespread practice, which is banned or critically discussed in some countries to improve animal welfare. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine the influence of breeding for short-tailedness (ST) or long-tailedness (LT) in sheep on the development of reproduction parameters and lamb performance. METHOD: One hundred forty-nine ewes were mated with four rams according to tail length. Pregnancy and pregnancy loss rates were calculated. During pregnancy, the progesterone levels (P4) of the ewes were measured. The weight and length of the 254 lambs were recorde

The influence of host genotype and gut microbial interactions on feed efficiency traits in pigs.

Feed efficiency and growth performance are economically important traits in pigs. Precious studies have been revealed that both genetics and gut microbes could influence host phenotypes, however, the mechanisms by which they affect pig growth and feed efficiency remain poorly understood. In this study, 361 crossbred Duroc × (Landrace × Yorkshire) commercial pigs were genotyped using GeneSeek Porcine SNP50K BeadChip, and the microbiotas from fecal samples were acquired using microbial 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology to investigate the impact of host genetics and gut microorganisms on growth

In vitro fertilization and hybridization potential of the Indian white shrimp (Penaeus indicus).

Managing the reproduction of shrimp farmed in captivity is essential for selective breeding and interspecies hybridization. Procedures have not been developed for conducting in vitro fertilization in penaeid shrimp. In this study, the feasibility of in vitro fertilization (IVF) of the pre-ovulatory oocyte of Penaeus indicus was examined. Additionally, the processes of fertilization and possibility of hybridizing P. indicus with P. monodon with utilization of IVF procedures was also evaluated. The IVF was conducted by dissecting ovaries with fully developed follicles, and mixing these (~0.1 mil

Development of a 38 K single nucleotide polymorphism array and application in genomic selection for resistance against Vibrio harveyi in Chinese tongue sole, Cynoglossus semilaevis.

Based on 1572 re-sequenced Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis), we investigated the accuracy of four genomic methods at predicting genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs) of Vibrio harveyi resistance in C. semilaevis when SNPs varying from 500 to 500 k. All methods outperformed the pedigree-based best linear unbiased prediction when SNPs reached 50 k or more. Then, we developed an SNP array "Solechip No.1" for C. semilaevis breeding using the Affymetrix Axiom technology. This array contains 38,295 SNPs with an average of 10.5 kb inter-spacing between two adjacent SNPs. We selected 4

Canine hip dysplasia in German Shepherd Dog-Greyhound crossbreeds.

Nineteen German Shepherd Dog-Greyhound crossbreeds in 7 litters were evaluated by pathoanatomic and/or radiographic examination of their pelves when 12 to 24 months old (mean, 19 months). The prevalence of hip dysplasia in the crossbreeds was 42% (8/19). The prevalence of hip dysplasia in purebred German Shepherd Dog half-siblings in 16 litters produced by parents of the crossbreeds when mated to other German Shepherd Dogs was 35% (16/46). When numerical values were assigned to the pathoanatootmic and radiographic evaluations of the pelves, it was found that the severity of dysplastic changes

Why do burying beetles bury? Competition and the fitness benefits of parental care.

Parental care increases the fitness of current offspring at a cost to their parents, compromising parental resources for future reproduction. Given this inherent conflict and cost, complex parental care is relatively uncommon. Reliance on a rare and critical resource for reproduction that necessitates intense competition and defence could be a key reason for the evolution of costly and diverse parental care behaviors. Burying beetles (genus Nicrophorus) rely on carrion for reproduction, and have a suite of parental care behaviors, including the burying of small carcasses within underground bre

Does habitat modification impact morphology, performance, and inflammatory responses in an amphibian with limited dispersal capacity (Lisssotriton helveticus)?

The environment of an organism exerts selective pressures that affect mobility, feeding, reproduction as well as predator-prey and conspecific interactions. Land use changes induced by human activities modify these selective pressures and may result in the adaptation of organisms. Amphibians are ectotherms that typically show a biphasic life cycle with an aquatic and terrestrial phase, which makes them particularly sensitive to environmental change. We studied the impact of habitat modifications on palmate newt populations in the Ile de France region across four types of habitats: urban, mixed

Validation of KASP markers associated with cassava mosaic disease resistance, storage root dry matter and provitamin A carotenoid contents in Ugandan cassava germplasm.

INTRODUCTION: The intrinsic high heterozygosity of cassava makes conventional breeding ineffective for rapid genetic improvement. However, recent advances in next generation sequencing technologies have enabled the use of high-density markers for genome-wide association studies, aimed at identifying single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) linked to major traits such as cassava mosaic disease (CMD) resistance, dry matter content (DMC) and total carotenoids content (TCC). A number of these trait-linked SNPs have been converted to Kompetitive allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (KASP) marker

Responses towards eyefluke (Diplostomum pseudospathaceum) in different genetic lineages of rainbow trout.

Marker-assisted selective breeding of fish with higher levels of resistance towards specific pathogens may improve fish health, but the impact of host genotype on susceptibility to multiple pathogen infections is still poorly investigated. This study examined the resistance in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss towards infection with the eye fluke Diplostomum pseudospathaceum. We used genetically selected rainbow trout, carrying SNPs associated with resistance towards the parasitic ciliate Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, and exposed the fish to eye fluke cercariae. We showed that fish partly resi

From selection signatures in cattle to functional validation in mice: HSPA12B negatively regulates adipose browning and thermogenesis.

Local cattle breeds have been domesticated and adapted to various climatic environments through natural and artificial selection. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying cold adaptation remain unknown. Adipose tissue browning may play a crucial role in this adaptation. Our analysis of 777K SNP genotyping data from 25 local Chinese cattle breeds revealed that the HSPA12B (heat shock protein A12B) gene underwent positive selection in Chinese northern cold-adapted breeds and Tibetan Plateau breeds. The results of the Western blot experiment showed that HSPA12B was highly expressed in adipose

Combining ability of banana triploid hybrid progenitors and genomic prediction of cross performance for agro-morphological traits.

Breeding disease-resistant cultivars that meet commercial criteria is essential to sustain banana production threatened by major diseases. Edible bananas are seedless triploid hybrids that represent end-breeding products. Hence, the crucial step in banana breeding is to improve and combine the parents. Currently, little information is available on parental combining abilities and on the inheritance of major traits to effectively guide banana breeding strategies. In this study, a breeding population of 2,723 triploid individuals resulting from multiparental diploid-tetraploid crosses was charac

Characterizing the vaginal microbiota of high and low producing Poll Merino and White Suffolk ewes.

There is a substantial, and growing, body of research focused on manipulating gastrointestinal microbes to affect health and production. However, the maternal vaginal microbiota and its effects on neonatal inoculation and lifetime production have received little attention. We aimed to characterize the vaginal microbes of domesticated sheep to determine whether they differ across sheep breeds with differing meat and wool growth potentials and to determine a link between vaginal microbes and high and low producing animals. A flock of White Suffolk (n = 136) and Poll Merino (n = 210) ewes were so

Postcopulatory sexual selection influences baculum evolution in primates and carnivores.

The extreme morphological variability of the baculum across mammals is thought to be the result of sexual selection (particularly, high levels of postcopulatory selection). However, the evolutionary trajectory of the mammalian baculum is little studied and evidence for the adaptive function of the baculum has so far been elusive. Here, we use Markov chain Monte Carlo methods implemented in a Bayesian phylogenetic framework to reconstruct baculum evolution across the mammalian class and investigate the rate of baculum length evolution within the primate order. We then test the effects of testes

Excess backfat deposition and restricted feeding in gestating sows: An overview of mechanisms compromising their health and performance, and regulatory effects of functional dietary fibers.

Statistical analysis of the relationship between pre-parturition backfat thickness and reproductive performance using a large dataset of 693 sows (gilts) revealed that both high and low backfat as detrimental to the optimal reproductive performance of sows. Further analysis indicated that the health and reproductive performance of sows are compromised by problems such as excess backfat deposition due to ad libitum feeding and reduced satiety due to restricted feeding. Despite the consensus that dietary fiber (DF) supplementation of sows during gestation improves their health and performance, t

Genetic control underlying dynamics of blueberry bioactive compounds during postharvest can drive breeding for functional fruits.

Blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) are widely recognized as a superfruit due to their high content health-promoting bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and phenolic acids. While these metabolites provide significant health benefits, their postharvest stability and implications for shelf life are not well characterized, a fact that is essential to delivery nutritious foods to consumers. To understand it, this study aimed to investigate the variability and changes of 32 flavonoid and phenolic acid metabolites evaluated in a diverse blueberry panel of 165 genotypes advanced selections after 1 and

Marker-assisted backcross breeding to develop wheat lines with stable yellow rust resistance without yield penalties.

Wheat production faces severe yield threats globally and regionally in India from rust diseases caused by Puccinia species. Genetic resistance breeding is the most sustainable approach to mitigate these losses, but traditional phenotypic selection is often constrained by environmental fluctuations and rapid pathogen evolution. Here we utilized marker-assisted backcross breeding (MABB) to introgress broad-spectrum yellow rust resistance genes, Yr10 and Yr15, from the donor genetic stock PBW703 into the elite, high-yielding wheat cultivar DBW88 to develop two high-yielding rust-resistant genotyp

Advances and Applications of Genome Editing in Precision Crop Breeding.

Genome editing is becoming an important tool for crop improvement by enabling precise modification of genetic variation. CRISPR-Cas technologies have expanded beyond nuclease-induced mutations to include base and prime editing, transcriptional and epigenetic regulation, multiplex editing, organelle editing and targeted DNA insertion. These advances support the development of agronomically valuable alleles and extend crop improvement beyond conventional selection, recombination and random mutagenesis. Applications now include plant architecture, yield-related traits, resistance to biotic and ab
