Olfactory threshold increase in trigeminal neuralgia after balloon compression.

Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (ITN) is a well-known disease often treated with neurosurgical procedures, which may produce sensorial abnormalities, such as numbness, dysesthesia and taste complaints. We studied 12 patients that underwent this technique, in order to verify pain, gustative and olfactory thresholds abnormalities, with a follow-up of 120 days. We compared the patients with a matched control group of 12 patients. Our results found a significant difference in the olfactory threshold at the immediate post-operative period (p=0.048). We concluded that injured trigeminal fibers are p

Delineation of the healthy rabbit tongue by immunohistochemistry - A technical note.

In the oral cavity the tongue is an important muscular organ that supports the swallowing of food and liquids. It is responsible for the sense of taste, based on the many different taste buds it contains. Research in the field of tongue diseases demands for suitable preclinical models. The healthy rabbit tongue may therefore serve as baseline and reference for the pathological situation. With this consideration, we covered the fixation and histological stainings as well as the immunohistochemical labelling of the healthy rabbit tongue. In this technical note, initial choice of the fixative is

Leptin modulates behavioral responses to sweet substances by influencing peripheral taste structures.

Leptin is a hormone that regulates body weight homeostasis mainly via the hypothalamic functional leptin receptor Ob-Rb. Recently, we proposed that the taste organ is a new peripheral target for leptin. Leptin selectively inhibits mouse taste cell responses to sweet substances and thereby may act as a sweet taste modulator. The present study further investigated leptin action on the taste system by examining expression of Ob-Rb in taste cells and behavioral responses to sweet substances in leptin-deficient ob/ob, and Ob-Rb-deficient db/db mice and their normal litter mates. RT-PCR analysis sho

Sweet taste receptor deficient mice have decreased adiposity and increased bone mass.

Functional expression of sweet taste receptors (T1R2 and T1R3) has been reported in numerous metabolic tissues, including the gut, pancreas, and, more recently, in adipose tissue. It has been suggested that sweet taste receptors in these non-gustatory tissues may play a role in systemic energy balance and metabolism. Smaller adipose depots have been reported in T1R3 knockout mice on a high carbohydrate diet, and sweet taste receptors have been reported to regulate adipogenesis in vitro. To assess the potential contribution of sweet taste receptors to adipose tissue biology, we investigated the

CO2/H(+) sensing: peripheral and central chemoreception.

H(+) is maintained constant in the internal environment at a given body temperature independent of external environment according to Bernard's principle of "milieu interieur". But CO2 relates to ventilation and H(+) to kidney. Hence, the title of the chapter. In order to do this, sensors for H(+) in the internal environment are needed. The sensor-receptor is CO2/H(+) sensing. The sensor-receptor is coupled to integrate and to maintain the body's chemical environment at equilibrium. This chapter dwells on this theme of constancy of H(+) of the blood and of the other internal environments. [H(+)

Anti-inflammatory Activity of Absinthin and Derivatives in Human Bronchoepithelial Cells.

Bitter taste receptors (hTAS2R) are expressed ectopically in various tissues, raising the possibility of a pharmacological exploitation. This seems of particular relevance in airways, since hTAS2Rs are involved in the protection of the aerial tissues from infections and in bronchodilation. The bis-guaianolide absinthin (1), one of the most bitter compounds known, targets the hTAS2R46 bitter receptor. Absinthin (1), an unstable compound, readily turns into anabsinthin (2) with substantial retention of the bitter properties, and this compound was used as a starting material to explore the chemic

Morphological description of the oropharyngeal cavity of Kinosternon scorpioides scorpioides (Linnaeus, 1766), (Testudines: Kinosternidae).

The oropharyngeal cavity of turtles exhibits considerable morphological diversity associated with differences in habitat, diet, and feeding strategies. However, the structural organization of this region remains poorly characterized in many Testudines, including Kinosternon scorpioides scorpioides, therefore, we aim to characterize the morphological aspects of the oropharyngeal cavity of K. s. scorpioides reported using macroscopic descriptions, light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). LM revealed that almost the entire epithelium lining the oropharyngeal cavity of K. s. s

Gustatory sweating recurring on peritoneal dialysis but resolving during periods of hemodialysis.

Gustatory sweating is a rare disorder characterized by profuse sweating on the forehead, face, scalp, and neck occurring soon after ingesting food, which has been reported in diabetic patients. The mechanism is thought to be triggered by taste buds and not gastric stimulation. We report a case where gustatory sweating repeatedly developed on peritoneal dialysis that resolved on periods of hemodialysis. A 32-year-old woman with diabetic end-stage renal disease developed gustatory sweating shortly after beginning continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis despite excellent clearances. After 5 mon

Comparative morphological studies on the stereo structure of the lingual papillae of selected primates using scanning electron microscopy.

A scanning electron microscope was used to observe the lingual papillae and their connective tissue cores (CTCs) in five primates (tupai, tamarin, crab-eating monkey, mandrill, and human). There were some slender protrusions rising from the top of the filiform papilla in all five types of primate. After removing the epithelium the filiform CTC from the tupai, tamarin and crab-eating monkey displayed a U-shaped arrangement of rod-shaped protrusions. The filiform CTC from the crab-eating monkey also had a columnar base. The human filiform CTC consisted of a primary columnar base, numerous short

Monoclonal antibody 2C5: a marker for a subpopulation of small neurones in rat dorsal root ganglia.

Monoclonal antibody 2C5 labels a subset of dorsal root ganglion neurones in the rat. The cell sizes of these neurones fall within the range for the small dark cell population and the antibody labels between a half and two-thirds of the neurones in this size range. A subpopulation of small neurones was also labelled in the trigeminal and vagal ganglia. Other sites of immunoreactivity in the central nervous system are the region of the substantia gelatinosa of the spinal cord, fibres in Lissauer's tract, the tractus solitarius and the tuberculum olfactorium. These sites are consistent with the a

Gross morphology and histology of the alimentary tract of the convict cichlid Amatitlania nigrofasciata.

The primary objectives of this study were to document the macroscopic and histological structure of the alimentary tract (AT) of the convict cichlid Amatitlania nigrofasciata, because there are no data available for this omnivorous freshwater fish of the family Cichlidae. The morphology of the AT of A. nigrofasciata resembles that of related species. While having morphological criteria of the AT typical of most omnivorous fishes, such as a blind sac stomach and medium length intestine, A. nigrofasciata also has some structural peculiarities: the oesophagus is lined by a uniform stratified squa

Dental application potential of mesenchymal stromal cells and embryonic stem cells.

In the past decade, research on the potential applications of stem cells in dentistry has made great progress. There are at least five different types of multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) originating from exfoliated primary teeth, including dental pulp, apica papilla, periodontal ligament, and dental follicle. It has been reported that dental tissue-derived MSCs are able to generate dentine-pulp-like complexes as well as differentiate into periodontal and craniofacial progenitor cells. Similar to these dental tissue-derived MSCs, bone marrowderived MSCs are also capable of developin

Expression of blood group-related glycoconjugates in the junctional and other oral epithelia of rodents.

BACKGROUND: The junctional epithelium (JE) attaches the gingiva to the non-vital tooth surface and has other unusual properties which protect the underlying periodontal tissues. The JE differs from other gingival and oral epithelia in its unusual expression of cytokeratins typical of both stratifying and of simple epithelia, a phenotypic pattern possibly related to its specialized functions. METHODS: The patterns of differentiation of rodent gingival and other epithelia were examined using monoclonal antibodies against various glycoconjugates which are expressed on epithelial cell surfaces an

Effect of Stimulus Duration on the Electrogustometric Threshold.

OBJECTIVE: Electrogustometry (EGM)-the psychophysical measurement of human taste function by the application of weak electric currents to taste bud fields-has proved useful in clinical and research settings. Although EGM detection thresholds have been reported to be sensitive to stimulus duration, studies differ on this point and have not been definitive. Most have employed too few subjects, electrogustometers incapable of presenting very low currents, and non-forced-choice tests that confound sensitivity with the response criterion. METHODS: Anodal single-staircase EGM detection thresholds w

Bivariate genome-wide association analysis strengthens the role of bitter receptor clusters on chromosomes 7 and 12 in human bitter taste.

BACKGROUND: Human perception of bitter substances is partially genetically determined. Previously we discovered a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) within the cluster of bitter taste receptor genes on chromosome 12 that accounts for 5.8% of the variance in the perceived intensity rating of quinine, and we strengthened the classic association between TAS2R38 genotype and the bitterness of propylthiouracil (PROP). Here we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using a 40% larger sample (n = 1999) together with a bivariate approach to detect previously unidentified common variants wi
