Integrated omics reveal the effects of vitamin D deficiency on gut microbiota and plasma metabolism in experimental autoimmune uveitis.

Vitamin D deficiency (VD-deficiency) has been implicated in various autoimmune diseases, including uveitis, yet its mechanistic role remains unclear. Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbial dysbiosis and metabolic disturbances may serve as critical intermediates linking VD-deficiency and autoimmune disease pathogenesis. Here, using an experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) model induced in B10RIII mice, we demonstrate that VD-deficiency exacerbates EAU severity, accompanied by enhanced Th1 and Th17 responses, suppressed regulatory T cells, and disruption of both intestinal and blood–retin

[Fuchs heterochromic cyclitis: current concepts].

The clinical features of Fuchs' heterochromic cyclitis (F.H.C.) were described thoroughly by him in 1906. Supplementary data was then supplied by Amsler and Verrey with respect to the vascular characteristics of this disease. Fuchs' disease is not a frequent affection and accounts for no more than 1-2% of the total cases of uveitis. The diagnosis is very difficult to establish at an early stage of the disease. Incomplete or atypical forms are frequent and differential diagnosis is difficult from other cases of cyclitis and/or intermediate uveitis. Furthermore, heterochromia is recognized with

Toxoplasmosis and behavioural changes.

Nearly one-third of the planet's population is affected by Toxoplasma gondii infection. In ophthalmology, toxoplasmosis is even considered to be the most common cause of posterior uveitis of infectious origin. Humans are only an intermediate host and T. gondii needs to infect cats for its sexual reproduction. All the elements increasing the risk of predation by the definitive host are then favourable to the parasite. Numerous experimental animal model studies have shown that T. gondii infection is associated with predatory risk behaviours such as an attraction of infected mice to cat urine. In

[Intravitreal implants: drug carriers and carriers of hope?].

Immunosuppressive agents are used for the therapy of noninfectious uveitis if intraocular quiescence and freedom from recurrences are not achievable with oral steroids at a low dosage. Partially, severe side effects are tolerated to preserve visual acuity even if the disease is limited to the eyes. Because of this a therapy would be desirable which is highly effective, limited to the eyes and with few side effects. For this fluocinolone acetonide and dexamethasone drug delivery systems were developed. Dexamethasone implants were already approved for the therapy of retinal vein occlusions and a

Bilateral rubeosis iridis and rubeotic glaucoma due to peripheral occlusive vasculitis associated with multiple sclerosis.

UNLABELLED: Multiple sclerosis is associated with iridocyclitis, intermediate uveitis, retinal periphlebitis, and optic neuritis. The periphlebitis is known to be rarely sight-threatening as a result of the sequelae of retinal neovascularization. CASE: This is a rare case of bilateral rubeosis iridis and rubeotic glaucoma in the setting of a branch retinal vein occlusion, widespread peripheral periphlebitis, and angiographic peripheral closure associated with "clinically definite" multiple sclerosis. DISCUSSION: The case illustrates the extreme end of the spectrum of peripheral retinal ische

A rare large-vessel involvement in a patient with a clinical diagnosis of granulomatosis with polyangiitis: A case report.

A previously healthy 22-year-old female presented with complaints of fatigue, joint pain, headache, fever, and night sweats for several months. She also reported a reddish painful left eye and a rash on her legs 2 months ago. On examination, her blood pressure was elevated at 160/100 mmHg and her lower limb pulses were hardly palpable. On investigation, she had anterior and intermediate uveitis, nasal septal ulcer, proteinuria, positive cytoplasmic anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (C-ANCA), and a computed tomography angiography showed multiple abdominal aortic aneurysms and occlusion of

Retinal vasoproliferative tumors in ocular conditions of childhood.

BACKGROUND: Retinal vasoproliferative tumor (RVPT) is a vascular mass with exudative retinopathy and minimally dilated feeder vessels. This type of tumor can occur as a primary or secondary condition. Our purpose was to describe secondary vasoproliferative tumors from ocular conditions in childhood. METHODS: The clinical records and fundus photographs of patients with secondary RVPTs were reviewed and a detailed literature search was conducted to identify reported cases of secondary RVPTs. This information was used to compile a list of ocular and nonocular childhood conditions associated with

Assessment and classification of choroidal vasculitis in posterior uveitis using indocyanine green angiography.

BACKGROUND: By allowing one to detect fluorescence beyond the retinal pigment epithelium, indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) has made it possible to analyse the choroidal vessels. Our aim was to characterize choroidal vasculitis in posterior uveitis using ICGA. METHODS: Charts of active posterior uveitis patients with a specific diagnosis seen in the different centers participating in the study who had undergone dual fluorescein and ICG angiography were reviewed. The type of inflammatory involvement of the choroidal circulation at entry and the treatment response on follow-up angiograms wer
