Restorative Effect of Fucoxanthin in an Ovalbumin-Induced Allergic Rhinitis Animal Model through NF-κB p65 and STAT3 Signaling.

Allergic rhinitis is a sensitivity to allergens that causes swelling or puffiness of the nasal airways. The occurrence of allergic rhinitis is mounting worldwide. We examined whether fucoxanthin restrains the development of allergic rhinitis provoked by ovalbumin (OVA). In this study, allergic rhinitis in male BALB/c mice was induced with OVA. The object was to evaluate the effect of fucoxanthin on consequently allergic mice. Allergic responses like rubbing and sneezing were scored to reveal the effect of fucoxanthin in the induced and treated groups. Mean histological scores demonstrated vari

Protective and therapeutic effects of fucoxanthin against sunburn caused by UV irradiation.

Mild exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is also harmful and hazardous to the skin and often causes a photosensitivity disorder accompanied by sunburn. To understand the action of UV on the skin we performed a microarray analysis to isolate UV-sensitive genes. We show here that UV irradiation promoted sunburn and downregulated filaggrin (Flg); fucoxanthin (FX) exerted a protective effect. In vitro analysis showed that UV irradiation of human dermal fibroblasts caused production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) without cellular toxicity. ROS production was diminished by N-acety

Effects of astaxanthin on dinitrofluorobenzene-induced contact dermatitis in mice.

Astaxanthin (AST) is known to exhibit antioxidative and antitumor properties, therefore, the present study investigated its other potential medical applications. AST was observed to exhibit anti‑allergic and anti‑inflammatory effects in a dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB)‑induced contact dermatitis (CD) mouse model and RBL‑2H3 cell lines. The topical application of AST effectively inhibited the enlargement of ear thickness and increase in weight, which occurred following repeated application of DNFB. Furthermore, topical application of different concentrations of AST inhibited inflammatory hyperplas

Astaxanthin exerts neuroprotection against experimental intracerebral hemorrhage in mice: association with anti-neuroinflammation and the Nrf2-ARE pathway.

Astaxanthin (ATX) is a dietary carotenoid that possesses potent effects of anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, and anti-cell death. ATX has neuroprotective properties in a variety of neurological diseases. However, whether ATX has a neuroprotective effect in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is still unknown. The present study was carried out to explore the protective effects of ATX and the underlying mechanisms using a collagenase-induced ICH in mice. Single dose of astaxanthin (100 mg/kg) or vehicle was administrated to mice through intraperitoneal injection at 30 min after ICH induction. Our re

Astaxanthin-loaded brain-permeable liposomes for Parkinson's disease treatment via antioxidant and anti-inflammatory responses.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cardinal motor symptoms resulting from the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Although current medications may alleviate its symptoms, Parkinson's disease remains incurable. Astaxanthin is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent; however, its high susceptibility to oxidative degradation and low aqueous solubility limit its therapeutic efficacy. This study aimed to improve the pharmaceutical properties and neuroprotective effects of astaxanthin for Parkinson's disease treatment by using lact

Astaxanthin Prevents Glucocorticoid-Induced Femoral Head Osteonecrosis by Targeting Ferroptosis through the JAK2/STAT3 Signaling Pathway.

Glucocorticoid (GC) is extensively used in clinical practice, and the osteonecrosis of the femoral head caused by them is a common issue in orthopedic surgery, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Astaxanthin (AST), a potent natural antioxidant, has an unexplored impact on GC-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (GIONFH). This study explores the effects and mechanisms of AST in counteracting dexamethasone (Dex)-induced ferroptosis and GIONFH. We developed a rat model of GIONFH using intraperitoneal Dex injections and conducted in vitro analysis by culturing osteoblasts (OBs) with

Fucoxanthin protects placenta-derived human mesenchymal stem cells against oxidative stress-induced apoptosis by modulating genes involved in DNA damage repair, ER stress response, p53-induced apoptosis.

Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) hold significant promise in regenerative medicine due to their ability to reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair. However, their therapeutic potential is often compromised by their high susceptibility to apoptosis under oxidative stress, prevalent in the microenvironment of the target tissues. Our previous study showed that fucoxanthin, a carotenoid derived from brown algae, can improve the viability of placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells (PL-MSCs) by reducing intracellular ROS levels through the activation of the PI3K/Akt/Nrf-2 signaling pathway

Novel 2-oxoethylthio-sulfonamide derivatives targeting pyocyanin/staphyloxanthin producing-pathogens: Antibiofilm, DHPS inhibition and gamma radiation effects.

A series of sulfonamide acetamide derivatives 3-14 were synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial and anti-virulence activities. The target compounds were initially screened in vitro for their antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Compounds 9, 10 and 13 showed significant antibacterial activity with bactericidal effects, compared to the standard antibiotics, ampicillin and sulfamethoxazole. These derivatives were then further tested for their antibiofilm activity against biofilm-forming S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. At su

Protective effect of astaxanthin on indomethacin-induced gastric ulcerations in mice.

Gastric ulcer disease remains one of the common medical burdens affecting millions worldwide due to its prevalent risk factors with the chronic usage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs at the top, reportedly through the stimulation of oxidative stress and triggering of inflammatory and apoptotic cascades in the gastric mucosa. Astaxanthin, a dietary keto-carotenoid derived from marine organisms is gaining a wide interest as a nutraceutical for its pronounced antioxidant properties. Here, we aim to examine the potential modulatory role of astaxanthin on indomethacin-induced gastric ulcera

Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties of a New Mixture of Vitamin C, Collagen Peptides, Resveratrol, and Astaxanthin in Tenocytes: Molecular Basis for Future Applications in Tendinopathies.

Tendinopathy is one of the most frequent musculoskeletal disorders characterized by sustained tissue inflammation and oxidative stress, accompanied by extracellular matrix remodeling. Patients suffering from this pathology frequently experience pain, swelling, stiffness, and muscle weakness. Current pharmacological interventions are based on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; however, the effectiveness of these strategies remains ambiguous. Accumulating evidence supports that oral supplementation of natural compounds can provide preventive, and possibly curative, effects. Vitamin C (Vit C),

Astaxanthin Protection against Neuronal Excitotoxicity via Glutamate Receptor Inhibition and Improvement of Mitochondrial Function.

Excitotoxicity is known to associate with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Huntington's disease, as well as aging, stroke, trauma, ischemia and epilepsy. Excessive release of glutamate, overactivation of glutamate receptors, calcium overload, mitochondrial dysfunction and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation are a few of the suggested key mechanisms. Astaxanthin (AST), a carotenoid, is known to act as an antioxidant and protect neurons from excitotoxic injuries. However, the exact molecular mechanism of
