BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major source of morbidity and mortality all over the world. It is one of the complications arising in a hospital environment. The main aim of this study is to estimate the incidence of VTE in respiratory inpatients.
METHOD: The authors carried out a prospective study on acute respiratory disease inpatients. A medical analytical index card was used. An echo-venous Doppler of lower limbs was practiced on D1 and D10 of hospitalization. The Wells scored was used to estimate the clinical probability of the occurrence of VTE.

Infections of Rhodococcus equi, a well-known pathogen in animals which causes cavitated pneumonia similar to that caused by mycobacteria, were studied in three HIV-infected patients. BACKGROUND: Procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) measurements in pleural fluid and plasma have been proposed to facilitate differential diagnosis of pleural effusion (PE). The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of these measurements when differentiating between benign (BPE) and malignant pleural effusion (MPE).
