Postural mechanisms in moderate-to-severe cerebral palsy.

People with moderate-to-severe cerebral palsy (CP) have the greatest need for postural control research yet are usually excluded from research due to deficits in sitting ability. We use a support system that allows us to quantify and model postural mechanisms in nonambulatory children with CP. A continuous external bench tilt stimulus was used to evoke trunk postural responses in seven sitting children with CP (ages 2.5 to 13 yr) in several test sessions. Eight healthy adults were also included. Postural sway was analyzed with root mean square (RMS) sway and RMS sway velocity, along with frequ

Orthopedic Injuries in Professional Surfers: A Retrospective Study at a Single Orthopedic Center.

BACKGROUND: Literature regarding surfing injuries is scarce and most studies report a high number of minor injuries. Recent literature suggests that musculoskeletal injuries are more common than previously reported. In the mid 2000s, competitive surfing has seen an increase in aerial maneuvers, as they have become more highly rewarded by the judging panel, which may be contributing to a change in injury patterns. Our goal was to evaluate orthopedic injuries in professional surfers. HYPOTHESIS: Orthopedic injuries in professional surfers are diverse and have evolved with skill and technology.

Effect of Fatigue Protocols on Upper Extremity Neuromuscular Function and Implications for Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injury Prevention.

BACKGROUND: As the incidence of overuse injuries to the medial elbow in overhead athletes continues to rise, recent evidence suggests a link between these injuries and alterations in biomechanics produced by athlete fatigue. Previous studies have evaluated the effect of fatigue on elbow injuries using a wide array of fatigue protocols/athletic tasks, and, as a consequence, the results have been heterogeneous. PURPOSE: To determine whether there is a uniform alteration in neuromuscular function or biomechanics as the overhead athlete fatigues. Furthermore, this study sought to determine whethe

Exercise Intensity Matters in Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain Rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION: Exercise therapy (ET) is advocated as a treatment for chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNSLBP). However, therapy effect sizes remain low. In other chronic disorders, training at higher intensity has resulted in greater improvements on both general health related and disease specific outcomes compared to lower-intensity ET. Possibly, high-intensity training also improves effect sizes in CNSLBP. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of a high-intensity ET program with a similar moderate-intensity ET program on disability, pain, function, exercise capacity, and abdominal/back muscle

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with quadriceps tendon-patellar bone allograft: matched case control study.

BACKGROUND: Quadriceps tendon-patellar bone (QTPB) autograft is an excellent graft option with good clinical outcome. Use of QTPB autografts have increased because they minimize donor-site morbidity including anterior knee pain, while providing adequate mechanical strength. Although, there were many clinical results about allografts that used in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, it have never been reported about the clinical outcome of ACL reconstruction with QTPB allograft. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical outcome of ACL reconstruction with QTPB allograft a

Contractile efficiency of dystrophic mdx mouse muscle: in vivo and ex vivo assessment of adaptation to exercise of functional end points.

Progressive weakness is a typical feature of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) patients and is exacerbated in the benign mdx mouse model by in vivo treadmill exercise. We hypothesized a different threshold for functional adaptation of mdx muscles in response to the duration of the exercise protocol. In vivo weakness was confirmed by grip strength after 4, 8, and 12 wk of exercise in mdx mice. Torque measurements revealed that exercise-related weakness in mdx mice correlated with the duration of the protocol, while wild-type (WT) mice were stronger. Twitch and tetanic forces of isolated diaphra
