Heavy metals exposure and hearing loss in US adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss is common and, in young persons, can compromise social development and educational achievement. Exposure to heavy metals has been proposed as an important risk factor for hearing loss. METHODS: We evaluated the cross-sectional associations between blood lead, blood mercury, and urinary cadmium and arsenic levels and audiometrically determined hearing loss in participants aged 12 to 19 years in the 2005-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey after accounting for the complex survey design. There were 2535 individuals available for analysis of blood lead

Soil and Water Pollution in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Systematic Review of Impacts on Ecosystems and Public Health.

BACKGROUND: Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), a region of critical biodiversity and natural resources, faces escalating threats from anthropogenic soil and water pollution. While individual studies have documented contamination, a comprehensive synthesis of its impacts on ecosystems and public health across the region was lacking. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to map and qualitatively synthesize the empirical evidence on the impacts of soil and water pollution in LAC, identifying regional research trends and critical knowledge gaps. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted a

Sodium Thiosulfate: An Innovative Multi-Target Repurposed Treatment Strategy for Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease.

Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) is a chronic, multifactorial, and progressive neurodegenerative disease that associates with aging and is highly prevalent in our older population (≥65 years of age). This hypothesis generating this narrative review will examine the important role for the use of sodium thiosulfate (STS) as a possible multi-targeting treatment option for LOAD. Sulfur is widely available in our environment and is responsible for forming organosulfur compounds that are known to be associated with a wide range of biological activities in the brain. STS is known to have (i) ant

Chemical Agent Use in Terrorist Events: A Gathering Storm Requiring Enhanced Civilian Preparedness.

BACKGROUND: The use of chemical weapons in terrorist attacks, though rare, remains a significant challenge and concern due to their ability to inflict mass casualties. Chemical attacks remain a topic of interest for Disaster Medicine (DM) and Counter-Terrorism Medicine (CTM) specialists and are clearly an area in need of enhanced preparedness. This study aims to provide an epidemiological description of all terrorism-related attacks using chemical agents as a primary weapon, sustained from 1970 - 2019. These data will be useful in the development of education programs in CTM and provide an ins

Developmental arsenic exposure is associated with sex differences in the epigenetic regulation of stress genes in the adult mouse frontal cortex.

Previously, we reported sex-dependent changes to global histone modifications and impairment of executive function in adult mice exposed to moderate levels of arsenic during early development. The present study investigated the effects of developmental arsenic exposure (DAE) on gene specific histone 3 lysine 9 acetylation (H3K9ac) and tri-methylation (H3K9me3) in the frontal cortex of male and female adult C57BL/6J mice. Dams were exposed to 50ppb arsenic in drinking water prior to and throughout gestation, and until pup weaning; once weened, the pups were given tap water (< 5ppb arsenic) and

[New development of hair examination! The searching of hair for the terminal residual substance of pleasant sensation].

Formerly, hair had been analyzed mainly in the field of individual identification. Otherwise, it is known that many substances are accumulated in hair such as metals like arsenic, mercury, alkaloids like caffeine, theophylline, drugs like opiate, stimulants, other drugs and poisons. So, by qualitative and quantitative analysis of such deposits in hair. It is possible to presume one's life manner during recent several months. This is the new development of hair analysis and it is expected that it may be wide of application. The main theme of this paper is hedonics. Nobody dislike hedonic sensat

Metal and metalloid immobilization by microbiologically induced carbonates precipitation.

The industrialization and growth of human population has increased the release and accumulation of metals and metalloids in the environment. Bioaccumulation and exposure to these elements have been associated with different types of diseases and cancer, thus looking for alternatives that decrease their bioavailability in the environment is crucial. Microbiologically induced carbonates precipitation (MICP) has been proposed as a potential bioremediation method to immobilize contaminating metals and metalloids. Studies published to date have mainly used ureolytic bacteria, reporting metal(loid)s

MicroRNA response to environmental mutagens in liver.

During the recent few years, microRNAs emerged as key molecules in the regulation of mammalian cell functions. It was also shown that their altered expression can promote pathologic conditions, such as cancer and other common diseases. Because environmental exposure to biological, chemical or physical agents may be responsible for human diseases, including cancer, uncovering relationships between exposure to environmental carcinogens and expression of microRNAs may help to disclose early mechanisms of disease and it may potentially lead to the development of useful indicators of toxic exposure

Arsine poisoning.

Hocken, A. G., and Bradshaw, G. (1970).Brit. J. industr. Med.,27, 56-60. Arsine poisoning. A case of acute arsine poisoning is described, occurring in an industrial metallurgy worker. The clinical course was of associated oliguric renal failure with acute haemolytic anaemia which was self-limiting but accompanied by marked non-thrombotic phlebitis. There was minor hepatocellular damage. Skin pigmentation was disproportionate to the elevation of serum bilirubin. Transient initial pulmonary oedema was regarded as a local irritative phenomenon. All systems underwent complete recovery. Renal funct

Transplacental carcinogenicity of inorganic arsenic in the drinking water: induction of hepatic, ovarian, pulmonary, and adrenal tumors in mice.

Arsenic is a known human carcinogen, but development of rodent models of inorganic arsenic carcinogenesis has been problematic. Since gestation is often a period of high sensitivity to chemical carcinogenesis, we performed a transplacental carcinogenicity study in mice using inorganic arsenic. Groups (n = 10) of pregnant C3H mice were given drinking water containing sodium arsenite (NaAsO(2)) at 0 (control), 42.5, and 85 ppm arsenite ad libitum from day 8 to 18 of gestation. These doses were well tolerated and body weights of the dams during gestation and of the offspring subsequent to birth w

Reversal of arsenic-induced hepatic apoptosis with combined administration of DMSA and its analogues in guinea pigs: role of glutathione and linked enzymes.

Arsenicosis, due to contaminated drinking water in the Indo-Bangladesh region, is a serious health hazard in terms of morbidity and mortality. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated due to arsenic toxicity have been attributed as one of the initial signals that impart cellular toxicity, which is controlled by the internal antioxidant glutathione (GSH). In the present study, we investigated (i) the role of GSH and its linked enzymes, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase, in reversing chronic arsenic toxicity using a thiol chelating agent, meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), or

Mercury exposure leading to functional vitamin B12 deficiency and subacute combined degeneration: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: The association between neurological symptomatology and heavy metal exposure has been reported in the literature. A few cases of extrapyramidal symptomatology and subacute combined degeneration have been described as manifestations of mercury intoxication. We highlight a case of a patient presenting with Parkinsonian features (tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia), pyramidal deficits, dysarthria, paresthesia, mild cognitive decline, and emotional lability, with proven elevated mercury levels in blood and hair and elevated arsenic in urine. CASE: A 60-year-old man, with history of

Lead induced oxidative stress and its recovery following co-administration of melatonin or N-acetylcysteine during chelation with succimer in male rats.

Lead is a ubiquitous element in the environment causing oxidative burst in the exposed individuals leading to tissue damage. Antioxidants have long been known to reduce the free radical-mediated oxidative stress while, thiol chelators have been used to treat arsenic toxicity. The therapeutic efficacy of melatonin or N-acetylcysteine (NAC) was studied in the present study, both individually and in combination with a potent thiol-chelating agent, meso 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), in reducing lead concentration in blood and other soft tissues. Their ability to restore altered haematopoieti

Drug- and heavy metal--induced hyperpigmentation.

Several categories of chemical and pharmacologic agents can cause alterations in cutaneous pigmentation, although the mechanisms differ and in several instances may be unknown. Fixed drug eruptions appear to have alteration of the basement membrane zone with incontinence of epidermal pigment as the mechanism of hyperpigmentation. Heavy metals produce increased pigmentation in part from deposition of metal particles and in part from an increase in epidermal melanin production. The antimalarials may bind to melanin. The phenothiazines and minocycline produce pigmentation from deposition of the d

Eccrine porocarcinoma with carcinomatous lymphangitis in a patient with history of arsenic exposure: a case report.

Eccrine porocarcinoma is a potentially fatal form of sweat gland carcinoma, due to its propensity to metastasize through lymph vessels. The authors report the case of a 69-year-old female who presented with swelling of the right leg and an ulcerated lesion of the right great toe. The initial histologic diagnosis was invasive squamous cell carcinoma. On follow-up, the patient developed lymphangitic tumor spread in the right leg, associated with right inguinal lymphadenopathy and lesions in vulva and flank. Reevaluation of the toe lesion led to a revised diagnosis of eccrine porocarcinoma. The p

Hemangiosarcoma of the liver. Spectrum of morphologic changes and clinical findings.

Analysis of four cases of hemangiosarcoma of the liver and review of the literature indicate that these tumors are either predominantly cystic and fairly well differentiated or are more solid and poorly differentiated. Well-differentiated hemangiosarcomas may resemble peliosis hepatis or other benign conditions. The tumor was associated disseminated intravascular coagulation and fibrinolysis syndrome in one of our cases. One of our patients had received thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) but none seemed to have been exposed to arsenicals or to vinyl chloride.

Renal health and the environment: heavy metal nephrotoxicity.

We currently recognise that environmental toxins such as cadmium, lead, and arsenic play a significant role in the development of chronic renal failure. Epidemiological studies have shown a strong association between exposure to these metals and the presence of chronic kidney injury. The physiopathological mechanisms behind metal-induced kidney injury are complex, and some aspects of their metabolism and damage mechanisms remain unknown. This review aims to analyse the physiopathological mechanisms of kidney injury due to cadmium, lead and arsenic.
