An Amphibious Whale from the Middle Eocene of Peru Reveals Early South Pacific Dispersal of Quadrupedal Cetaceans.

Cetaceans originated in south Asia more than 50 million years ago (mya), from a small quadrupedal artiodactyl ancestor [1-3]. Amphibious whales gradually dispersed westward along North Africa and arrived in North America before 41.2 mya [4]. However, fossil evidence on when, through which pathway, and under which locomotion abilities these early whales reached the New World is fragmentary and contentious [5-7]. Peregocetus pacificus gen. et sp. nov. is a new protocetid cetacean discovered in middle Eocene (42.6 mya) marine deposits of coastal Peru, which constitutes the first indisputable quad

Giardia and Cryptosporidium in cetaceans on the European Atlantic coast.

The occurrence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium was investigated in cetacean specimens stranded on the northwestern coast of Spain (European Atlantic coast) by analysis of 65 samples of large intestine from eight species. The parasites were identified by direct immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) and by PCR amplification of the β-giardin gene, the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region and the SSU-rDNA gene of Giardia and the SSU-rDNA gene of Cryptosporidium. Giardia and Cryptosporidium were detected in 7 (10.8 %) and 9 samples (13.8 %), respectively. In two samples, co-infection with both parasites was obse

Genetic architecture in a marine hybrid zone: comparing outlier detection and genomic clines analysis in the bivalve Macoma balthica.

The role of natural selection in speciation has received increasing attention and support in recent years. Different types of approaches have been developed that can detect genomic regions influenced by selection. Here, we address the question whether two highly different methods--F(ST) outlier analysis and admixture analysis--detect largely the same set of non-neutral genomic elements or, instead, complementary sets. We study genetic architecture in a natural secondary contact zone where extensive admixture occurs. The marine bivalves Macoma balthica rubra and M. b. balthica descend from two

Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of hexavalent chromium in human and North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) lung cells.

Humans and cetaceans are exposed to a wide range of contaminants. In this study, we compared the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of a metal pollutant, hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], which has been shown to cause damage in lung cells from both humans and North Atlantic right whales. Our results show that Cr induces increased cell death and chromosome damage in lung cells from both species with increasing intracellular Cr ion levels. Soluble Cr(VI) induced less of a cytotoxic and genotoxic effect based on administered dose in right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) cells than in human (Homo sapiens) ce

Shewanella and Photobacterium spp. in oysters and seawater from the Delaware Bay.

Shewanella algae, S. putrefaciens, and Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae are indigenous marine bacteria and human pathogens causing cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis, abscesses, septicemia, and death. Infections are rare and are most often associated with the immunocompromised host. A study was performed on the microbiological flora of oysters and seawater from commercial oyster harvesting sites in the Delaware Bay, New Jersey. From 276 water and shellfish samples tested, 1,421 bacterial isolates were picked for biochemical identification and 170 (12.0%) of the isolates were presumptivel

Molecular identification and developmental expression of UV and green opsin mRNAs in the pineal organ of the Atlantic halibut.

The pineal organ is the only differentiated photoreceptor organ present in embryos and early larvae of the Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus). We investigated the molecular identity of opsins in the pineal organ, and their expression during different life stages. Using RT-PCR we identified two 681-bp gene sequences, named HPO1 and HPO4, in cDNA from adult pineal and whole embryos. The predicted amino acid sequences showed highest identity to the transmembrane regions of teleostean RH2 green cone opsins (HPO1, 72-91%) and SWS-1 UV cone opsins (HPO4, 71-83%). In situ hybridization reve

Extraction of (129)I and (127)I via combustion from organic rich samples using (125)I as a quantitative tracer.

Iodine-129 ((129)I) is a biophilic, naturally occurring radioisotope (half-life: 1.57 × 10(7) years) that has been released in large quantities by nuclear fuel reprocessing. This iodine has cycled throughout the globe and chiefly the northern hemisphere and can be found in a wide variety of environmental materials, particularly organic rich soil and organic matter. Extracting iodine reliably from solid samples has been done by a variety of methods, however, pyrohydrolysis has been the most widely used. There is a wide variation between existing pyrohydrolysis techniques and this raises questio

Four new species of Acanthobothrium van Beneden, 1849 (Cestoda: Onchoproteocephalidea) from the spotted skate, Raja straeleni Poll, off the Western Cape, South Africa.

The examination of eight spotted skates, Raja straeleni Poll, resulted in the discovery of four new species of Acanthobothrium van Beneden, 1849, namely A. microhabentes sp. n., A. microtenuis sp. n., A. crassus sp. n., and A. dolichocollum sp. n., located off the Western Cape of South Africa. With a total of over 200 valid species of Acanthobothrium recognised worldwide, the use of an integrative approach becomes imperative in the interest of simplifying interspecific comparisons between congeners. In accordance with this, the four new species were incorporated into the category classificatio

Molecular epidemiology of seal parvovirus, 1988-2014.

A novel parvovirus was discovered recently in the brain of a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) with chronic meningo-encephalitis. Phylogenetic analysis of this virus indicated that it belongs to the genus Erythroparvovirus, to which also human parvovirus B19 belongs. In the present study, the prevalence, genetic diversity and clinical relevance of seal parvovirus (SePV) infections was evaluated in both harbor and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) that lived in Northwestern European coastal waters from 1988 to 2014. To this end, serum and tissue samples collected from seals were tested for the presenc

Brucella pinnipedialis hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) strain in the mouse model with concurrent exposure to PCB 153.

Brucellosis, a worldwide zoonosis, is linked to reproductive problems in primary hosts. A high proportion of Brucella-positive hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) have been detected in the declined Northeast Atlantic stock. High concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have also been discovered in top predators in the Arctic, including the hooded seal, PCB 153 being most abundant. The aim of this study was to assess the pathogenicity of Brucella pinnipedialis hooded seal strain in the mouse model and to evaluate the outcome of Brucella spp. infection after exposure of mice to PCB 153.

Molecular surveillance of adenovirus and coronavirus in Procellariiformes, Brazil: Detection of new divergent adenoviruses.

Adenoviruses are widespread DNA viruses that infect a broad range of vertebrate hosts and are recognized for their long-term host coevolution, remarkable genetic diversity, and broad pathogenic potential. Coronaviruses circulate among wild birds due to their evolutionary potential and are relevant to animal and public health. However, the diversity and ecological role of these viruses in pelagic seabirds remain poorly understood. This study provides the first molecular survey of adenoviruses and coronaviruses in Procellariiformes from the South Atlantic. Fifty stranded individuals representing

Commercial cuttlefish exposed to noise from offshore windmill construction show short-range acoustic trauma.

The installation of marine renewable energy devices (MREDs, wind turbines and converters of wave, tidal and ocean thermal energy) has increased quickly in the last decade. There is a lack of knowledge concerning the effects of MREDs on benthic invertebrates that live in contact with the seabed. The European common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is the most abundant cephalopod in the Northeast Atlantic and one of the three most valuable resources for English Channel fisheries. A project to build an offshore wind farm in the French bay of Saint-Brieuc, near the English Channel, raised concern ab

BRUCELLA PINNIPEDIALIS IN GREY SEALS ( HALICHOERUS GRYPUS) AND HARBOR SEALS ( PHOCA VITULINA) IN THE NETHERLANDS.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease with terrestrial or marine wildlife animals as potential reservoirs for the disease in livestock and human populations. The primary aim of this study was to assess the presence of Brucella pinnipedialis in marine mammals living along the Dutch coast and to observe a possible correlation between the presence of B. pinnipedialis and accompanying pathology found in infected animals. The overall prevalence of Brucella spp. antibodies in sera from healthy wild grey seals ( Halichoerus grypus; n=11) and harbor seals ( Phoca vitulina; n=40), collected between 2007 an

The trauma signature of 2016 Hurricane Matthew and the psychosocial impact on Haiti.

Background. Hurricane Matthew was the most powerful tropical cyclone of the 2016 Atlantic Basin season, bringing severe impacts to multiple nations including direct landfalls in Cuba, Haiti, Bahamas, and the United States. However, Haiti experienced the greatest loss of life and population disruption. Methods. An established trauma signature (TSIG) methodology was used to examine the psychological consequences of Hurricane Matthew in relation to the distinguishing features of this event. TSIG analyses described the exposures of Haitian citizens to the unique constellation of hazards associated

Contaminant-induced immunotoxicity in harbour seals: wildlife at risk?

Persistent, lipophilic polyhalogenated aromatic hydrocarbons (PHAHs) accumulate readily in the aquatic food chain and are found in high concentrations in seals and other marine mammals. Recent mass mortalities among several marine mammal populations have been attributed to infection by morbilliviruses, but a contributing role for immunotoxic PHAHs, including the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) was not ruled out. We addressed this issue by carrying out a semi-field study in which captive harbour seals were fe

Developmental transition of visual and nonvisual photoreception and circadian clock during smoltification in the eye and brain of Atlantic salmon.

Seasonal variation in photoperiod is an important cue that regulates changes in physiology and behavior during the anadromous lifestyle of Atlantic salmon. The parr-smolt transformation or smoltification, where fish migrate from rivers to the ocean, is promoted by an increased photoperiod in the spring. Photoperiodic information is transferred through the light-brain-pituitary axis, resulting in pituitary hormones stimulating changes related to this transition. The light environment is perceived by ocular photopigments in the rods and cones that convey image formation and via nonvisual photore

American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) as wetland ecosystem carbon stock regulators.

Blue carbon refers to organic carbon sequestered by oceanic and coastal ecosystems. This stock has gained global attention as a high organic carbon repository relative to other ecosystems. Within blue carbon ecosystems, tidally influenced wetlands alone store a disproportionately higher amount of organic carbon than other blue carbon systems. North America harbors 42% of tidally influenced global wetland area, which has been identified as a critical carbon stock in the context of climate change mitigation. However, quantified associations between vertebrate biota and carbon sequestration withi

Hydrogeochemical and isotopic assessment for characterizing groundwater quality in the Mitidja plain (northern Algeria).

Coastal aquifer overexploitation represents a concerning trigger for water salinization around the world and especially in arid and semi-arid regions along with urban growth and urbanization, as well as land use human-induced changes. This study aims to assess the groundwater quality in the Mitidja alluvial aquifer (northern Algeria) along with its suitability for domestic and agricultural utilizations. A hydrogeochemical approach, based on the interpretation of groundwater physiochemical parameters (EC, pH, dry residue, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl-, SO42-, HCO3-, and NO3-) collected during the we

On the causes of geographically heterogeneous parallel evolution in sticklebacks.

The three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) is an important model system for the study of parallel evolution in the wild, having repeatedly colonized and adapted to freshwater from the sea throughout the northern hemisphere. Previous studies identified numerous genomic regions showing consistent genetic differentiation between freshwater and marine ecotypes but these had typically limited geographic sampling and mostly focused on the Eastern Pacific region. We analysed population genomic data from global samples of the three-spined stickleback marine and freshwater ecotypes to detect

Comparison of endothelial cell density of organ cultured corneas with cornea donor study.

PURPOSE: Determination of the endothelial cell density (ECD) by eye banks is paramount in donor cornea qualification. Unbiased measurement avoids wastage and grafts with an increased risk of premature failure. Internal calibration of the counting method is essential, but external validation would add an extra stage in the assessment of reliability. In this respect, data published by the multicenter Cornea Donor Study (CDS) in 2005 is a reference. The aim of the study was to compare ECD determined within a single eye bank, which uses calibrated image analysis software designed for transmitted l
