Exposure of native bees foraging in an agricultural landscape to current-use pesticides.

The awareness of insects as pollinators and indicators of environmental quality has grown in recent years, partially in response to declines in honey bee (Apis mellifera) populations. While most pesticide research has focused on honey bees, there has been less work on native bee populations. To determine the exposure of native bees to pesticides, bees were collected from an existing research area in northeastern Colorado in both grasslands (2013-2014) and wheat fields (2014). Traps were deployed bi-monthly during the summer at each land cover type and all bees, regardless of species, were comp

Spatial-seasonal distribution and ecological risk assessment of multiple herbicides (chloroacetamides, triazines, chlorophenoxy acids, bentazone) and their transformation products in the Yangtze River, China.

Herbicides such as chloroacetamides, chlorophenoxy acids, triazines, and bentazone are widely used in agriculture, contaminating aquatic ecosystems. However, their distribution and ecological risks in the Yangtze River are not clear. Thus, we analyzed 144 surface water samples (72 each in dry and wet season, respectively) collected from 72 sites along the Yangtze River mainstream, targeting 37 compounds, including these herbicides and their transformation products. Most compounds (31/37) were detected in > 90% of the samples. The dominant compounds were acetochlor oxanilic acid (median: 30.5 n

Metabolic reprogramming and organelle quality control: The "silent" drivers of Sertoli cell dysfunction under environmental stressors.

Sertoli cells (SCs) are the metabolic and structural "nurse" cells of the seminiferous epithelium. Classical testicular toxicology has largely focused on endpoints such as germ cell apoptosis, testicular atrophy and overt Sertoli cell death. These outcomes undoubtedly capture severe injury, but they are the last step in a longer pathogenic sequence. A growing body of work indicates that environmental toxicants and systemic metabolic stress reprogram SC energy metabolism and disrupt organelle quality control at sub-lethal levels long before cell death becomes evident. In this early phase, SCs l

Assessing pesticide pollution in the Río de la Plata: A multi-tiered approach to ecological risk evaluation.

Agricultural intensification across the Argentine Pampas is reshaping the contaminant load delivered to the Río de la Plata. This study presents a basin-scale appraisal of pesticide occurrence and ecological risk along the Argentine margin, integrating monitoring at 22 surface-water sites with two sediment campaigns and targeted risk characterization. Eighty pesticides were analyzed; 34 were detected in water above detection limits. Occurrence was dominated by herbicides (glyphosate, atrazine and metabolites), alongside frequent fungicides and insecticides. In sediments, glyphosate and AMPA we

Mercury and pesticides occurrence in white storks (Ciconia ciconia) feathers from areas with different land use.

White storks (Ciconia ciconia) are effective biomonitors of environmental pollution due to their wide distribution, opportunistic foraging behaviour, and tolerance of human-modified habitats. In this study, we measured Hg and 24 pesticides in the feathers of C. ciconia from multiple sites in north-western Spain with heterogeneous land use patterns. Our objectives were: (i) to quantify pollutant levels in feather samples; (ii) to assess internal variation in Hg accumulation between feather structures (rachis versus barbs); and (iii) to examine relationships between pollutant levels and surround

Reducing toxicity and antimicrobial activity of a pesticide mixture via photo-Fenton in different aqueous matrices using iron complexes.

This is the first study to investigate ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS)/photo-Fenton process to polish real wastewater containing pesticides for possible water reuse. To this end, simultaneous degradation of pesticides ametrine, atrazine, imidacloprid and tebuthiuron was evaluated in distilled water (DW) and in sewage treatment plant (STP) effluent at initial pH 6.0. Several operational parameters (Fe3+-EDDS concentration, Fe3+-EDDS molar ratio, EDDS addition patterns and radiation source) were evaluated. 80-98% removal of target pesticides were obtained in DW using 30 μmol L-1 of F

Limited representation of drinking-water contaminants in pregnancy-birth cohorts.

Water contamination and noise have been consistently the least assessed environmental/lifestyle exposures in pregnancy-birth cohorts (PBC). Water quality surveillance data collected during the past decade within urban drinking-water distribution systems call for re-evaluation of water and health issues in the developed world. The objectives of this scientific commentary were to (i) highlight the extent of appraisal of water contamination in exposure assessment studies of PBC, worldwide, and (ii) propose recommendations to increase awareness of emerging water-related risks through their improve

Molecular multi-effect screening of environmental pollutants using the MolDarT.

Molecular effect detection is a useful approach for ecotoxicological screening of chemicals. We show here the application of the molecular DarT (MolDarT), where the expression of selected target genes is detected in short-term (120 h) exposed developing zebrafish (Danio rerio), thus allowing subacute multi-effect compound screening. The genes metallothionein 2 (mt2), cytochrome P450 1A1 (cyp1a1), and recombination activation gene 1 (rag1) are used as endpoints that describe detoxification/metal toxicity (mt2), detoxification/PAH toxicity (cyp1a1), and acquired immune system disruption (rag1).

Modeling response of species to microcontaminants: comparative ecotoxicology by (sub)lethal body burdens as a function of species size and partition ratio of chemicals.

A model was designed and calibrated with accumulation data to calculate the internal concentrations of microcontaminants in organisms as a function of a few constants and variables. The main factors are the exposure time, the external exposure concentration, the partition ratio of the compound, and the size of the taxon concerned. The model was applied to calculate the lethal and sublethal body burdens of several priority compounds and some major taxa. Estimations were generally confirmed at the order of magnitude level by measured residues and applied doses if available. According to the esti

Allelochemical Potential of Smilax fluminensis Steud. (Smilacaceae) Leaves: Investigation of the Effects on Germination, Seedling Development and Cellular Alterations.

Agrochemicals are used worldwide in food production, but their use varies between countries due to the damage observed to nature and human health. Allelopathy is the primary pathway of chemical communication in plants, interfering with biome development through stimulation and/or inhibition mechanisms. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the biological activities of the ethanol extract (EE) and fractions of S. fluminensis leaves on monocotyledonous and eudicotyledonous models. The EE was obtained by percolation with ethanol, and the hexane (HEXF), dichloromethane (DCMF), ethyl acetate (EAF),

The development and excretion of Toxoplasma gondii oocyst manipulate the gut microbiota in its definitive host.

BACKGROUND: Oocysts serve as the primary source of Toxoplasma infection. Therefore, understanding oocyst development and exploring effective strategies to prevent oocyst excretion are crucial for controlling toxoplasmosis. METHODS: In this study, shotgun metagenomics was employed to characterize the functional and compositional changes in the gut microbiota of cats during oocyst development. The Spearman correlation test was utilized to analyze the correlation between differential Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways and carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) in key bacteria

Impact of different sterilisation techniques on sorption and NER formation of test chemicals in soil.

Standard OECD tests are used to generate data on biodegradation (OECD 307) and sorption (OECD 106) of test chemicals in soil. In such tests, data on abiotic degradation using sterile samples are utilised to investigate any losses due to abiotic processes. The data from sterile samples are also used to interpret results and findings of non-sterile samples, especially in the context of sorption and non-extractable residue (NER) formation. However, to ensure the comparability of the data obtained from sterile and non-sterile experiments, effects of sterilisation on the soil matrix should be minim

Removal, transformation and ecological risk assessment of pesticide in rural wastewater by field-scale horizontal flow constructed wetlands of treated effluent.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used in sewage treatment in rural areas, but there are only a few studies on field-scale CWs in treating wastewater-borne pesticides. In this study, the treatment and metabolic transformation of 29 pesticides in rural domestic sewage by 10 field-scale horizontal flow CWs (HF-CWs), each with a treatment scale of 36‒5000 m3/d and operated for 2‒10 years, in Guangzhou, Southern China was investigated. The risk of pesticides in treated effluent and main factors influencing such risk were evaluated. Results demonstrated that HF-CWs could remove pesticides in se

Temperature affects the toxicity of pesticides to cercariae of the trematode Echinostoma trivolvis.

Global climate change is predicted to have significant impacts on ecological interactions such as host-parasite relationships. Increased temperatures may also interact with other anthropogenic stressors, such as chemical contaminants, to exacerbate or reduce parasite transmission. However, studies on the effects of pesticides on non-target species are typically conducted at one standard temperature, despite the toxicity of many agrochemicals being temperature-dependent. Furthermore, most studies assessing the effects of temperature on pesticide toxicity have been conducted on host organisms, l

Proteome response of fish under multiple stress exposure: Effects of pesticide mixtures and temperature increase.

Aquatic systems can be subjected to multiple stressors, including pollutant cocktails and elevated temperature. Evaluating the combined effects of these stressors on organisms is a great challenge in environmental sciences. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to assess the molecular stress response of an aquatic fish species subjected to individual and combined pesticide mixtures and increased temperatures. For that, goldfish (Carassius auratus) were acclimated to two different temperatures (22 and 32°C) for 15 days. They were then exposed for 96h to a cocktail of herbicides

Performance of a constructed wetland in Grand Marais, Manitoba, Canada: Removal of nutrients, pharmaceuticals, and antibiotic resistance genes from municipal wastewater.

BACKGROUND: The discharge of complex mixtures of nutrients, organic micropollutants, and antibiotic resistance genes from treated municipal wastewater into freshwater systems are global concerns for human health and aquatic organisms. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are genes that have the ability to impart resistance to antibiotics and reduce the efficacy of antibiotics in the systems in which they are found. In the rural community of Grand Marais, Manitoba, Canada, wastewater is treated passively in a sewage lagoon prior to passage through a treatment wetland and subsequent release into s

Anovestibular fistula with imperforate anus in two adults.

Intersex (specifically, testicular oocytes) has been observed in male smallmouth bass (SMB; Micropterus dolomieu) and other centrarchids in the South Branch of the Potomac River, U.S.A., and forks of the Shenandoah River, U.S.A., during the past five years. This condition often is associated with exposure to estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals in some fish species, but such chemicals and their sources have yet to be identified in the Potomac. In an attempt to better understand the plausible causes of this condition, we investigated the reproductive health of bass sampled up- and downstre

The spatiotemporal distribution, partitioning, and prioritization of current use pesticides (CUPs) in aquatic environment of Pearl River Delta.

Current use pesticides (CUPs) are widely applied in Pearl River Delta (PRD), one of the most developed agricultural regions in China. The characteristic of CUPs contamination in aquatic environment in PRD remains fragmentary, in particular to the prioritization of CUPs. This study investigated the spatiotemporal distribution, partitioning, and prioritization of four CUPs categories, including 15 neonicotinoids and metabolites, 12 insecticides, 11 herbicides, and 3 fungicides, in aquatic environment of PRD. The results showed that 19 and 8 out of 41 target CUPs were detected in more than 50 % w

Ten years of monitoring pharmaceuticals and pesticides in the aquatic environment nearby a solid-waste treatment plant: Historical data, trends and risk assessment.

The emission of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from wastewater treatment plants has been extensively studied; however, less attention has been paid to municipal solid waste treatment plants (MSWTPs), which can also be a potential source for CECs into surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) ecosystems. In this work, the environmental impact of a MSWTP located in the province of Castelló, Spain, was studied along a period of ten years (from 2012 to 2022). A total of 173 water samples (including SW and GW) collected from the surrounding of this plant were monitored for 93 compounds (phar

Multiple antibiotic resistance and herbicide catabolic profiles of bacteria isolated from Lake Villarrica surface sediments (Chile).

Antibiotics and herbicides are contaminants of emerging concern in aquatic environments. Lake Villarrica is a relevant freshwater body in Chile and was recently designated a 'saturated nutrient zone'. Here, we investigated the occurrence of multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) and herbicide catabolic profiles among bacteria present in the surface sediments of Lake Villarrica. The occurrence of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs; blaTEM, catA and tetM) and herbicide-catabolic genes (HCGs; phnJ and atzA) was investigated by qPCR. Subsequently, the presence of culturable bacteria with multiple resi
