Click and chirp evoked auditory brainstem responses in infants whose mothers had COVID-19 during pregnancy.

AIM: Recent studies have reported that COVID-19 and its complications during pregnancy are not a risk for hearing loss. However, there is limited research on examining auditory brainstem response (ABR) latencies in infants whose mothers had COVID-19 during pregnancy. Hence, in this study, ABRs were recorded using condensation and rarefaction click polarities, as well as for CE-Chirp® stimuli, in infants whose mothers had COVID-19 during pregnancy and those whose mothers did not. METHODS: In total, 27 infants whose mothers had COVID-19 during pregnancy and 32 infants whose mothers did not repo

Results of an Interdisciplinary Day Care Approach for Chronic Tinnitus Treatment: A Prospective Study Introducing the Jena Interdisciplinary Treatment for Tinnitus.

Objective: Considering the heterogeneity of the symptoms shown by patients suffering from chronic tinnitus, there are surprisingly few interdisciplinary treatments available, and mostly available only for inpatients. In order to provide an interdisciplinary treatment, we developed a day care concept in which each patient was treated by an ENT doctor, a cognitive behavioral therapist, a specialist for medical rehabilitation and an audiologist (Jena Interdisciplinary Treatment for Tinnitus, JITT). The aim of this study was to observe the changes of tinnitus related distress due to interdisciplin

Otitis media with effusion.

The clinical practice guideline on otitis media with effusion (OME) provides evidence-based recommendations on diagnosing and managing OME in children. This is an update of the 1994 clinical practice guideline "Otitis Media With Effusion in Young Children," which was developed by the Agency for Healthcare Policy and Research (now the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality). In contrast to the earlier guideline, which was limited to children 1 to 3 years old with no craniofacial or neurologic abnormalities or sensory deficits, the updated guideline applies to children aged 2 months through

Pupillometry Reflects Listening Effort as a Function of Talker in the AzBio Sentences.

BACKGROUND: Pupillometry, or the quantification of pupil size, reflects a variety of processes involved in listening effort and is sensitive to many cognitive demands even when word recognition abilities are high. However, it is uncommon for studies to use clinical tests to examine listening effort, which increases barriers for audiologists seeking to apply this information to their clinical practice. The AzBio sentences present a unique opportunity to use a clinical test to categorize a common concern reported by patients: certain talkers are more difficult to understand than others. PURPOSE

A randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of trans-tympanic injections of a sodium thiosulfate gel to prevent cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in patients with head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND: Cisplatin-induced hearing loss is frequent and severe. Antioxidants such as sodium thiosulfate (STS) can neutralize the effects of cisplatin. The objective of the trial was to test the efficacy of trans-tympanic injections of a STS gel to prevent cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. METHODS: Eligible participants were newly diagnosed patients with stage III or IV squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth, oropharynx, hypopharynx, or larynx and scheduled to be treated by concurrent chemoradiation (CCR). Patients with asymmetric hearing were not eligible. The planed treatment included cisplati

Longitudinal hearing loss in Wolfram syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Wolfram syndrome (WFS) is a rare autosomal recessive disease with clinical manifestations of diabetes mellitus (DM), diabetes insipidus (DI), optic nerve atrophy (OA) and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Although SNHL is a key symptom of WFS, there is limited information on its natural history using standardized measures. Such information is important for clinical care and determining its use as an outcome measure in clinical trials. METHODS: Standardized audiologic measures, including pure-tone testing, tympanometry, speech perception, and the unaided Speech Intelligibility Ind

Self-Reported Hearing Aid Requirements among U.S. Military Personnel and the Association with Probable Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Auditory problems are ubiquitous among U.S. military personnel. Hearing aids are an effective treatment for both hearing loss and tinnitus, two of the most common diagnoses among veterans awarded disability compensation, but the prevalence of hearing aid requirements in the U.S. military is unknown. Another military health problem is posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an anxiety disorder characterized by exposure to a traumatic event. While some studies have found an association between auditory problems and PTSD, no research has examined the relationship between hearing aid req

Auditory System Injury on the Battlefield-Solutions for Point-of-Injury and Prolonged Casualty Care: A DOTmLPF-P Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: "Good hearing" (DoDI 6030.03 6.5&6.6) is a combat multiplier, critical to service members' lethality and survivability on the battlefield. Exposure to an explosive blast or high-intensity continuous noise is common in operational settings with the potential to compromise both hearing and vestibular health and jeopardize safety and high-level mission performance. The Joint Trauma System Acoustic Trauma Clinical Practice Guideline was published in 2018, providing recommendations for the assessment and treatment of aural blast injuries and acoustic trauma in the forward deployed env

Systematic Evaluation of the T30 Neurostimulator Treatment for Tinnitus: A Double-Blind Randomised Placebo-Controlled Trial with Open-Label Extension.

Tinnitus is often triggered by cochlear damage and has been linked with aberrant patterns of neuronal activity. Acoustic Coordinated Reset (CR®) Neuromodulation is a sound therapy hypothesised to reduce tinnitus symptoms by desynchronising pathological brain activity using a portable acoustic device (the T30 neurostimulator). We report results of a pivotal trial to test the efficacy of this intervention. This two-centre, double-blind randomised controlled trial with long-term open-label extension, was undertaken between February 2012 and February 2014 in the UK. Participants were 100 adults wi

OPRA-RS: A Hearing-Aid Fitting Method Based on Automatic Speech Recognition and Random Search.

Hearing-aid (HA) prescription rules (such as NAL-NL2, DSL-v5, and CAM2) are used by HA audiologists to define initial HA settings (e.g., insertion gains, IGs) for patients. This initial fitting is later individually adjusted for each patient to improve clinical outcomes in terms of speech intelligibility and listening comfort. During this fine-tuning stage, speech-intelligibility tests are often carried out with the patient to assess the benefits associated with different HA settings. As these tests tend to be time-consuming and performance on them depends on the patient's level of fatigue and
