Brain abscess in a patient with psoriatic arthritis treated with adalimumab: A case report.

RATIONALE: In patients receiving biological therapies, serious infections are a major concern. Infections associated with anti-tumor necrosis factor antibody therapy include tuberculosis, viral, fungal, and bacterial infections. Likewise, severe infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract, lung, skin and soft tissue, urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, joint, and bone have also been reported previously. However, infections involving the central nervous system are rare, especially an intracranial infection caused by odontogenic infection. To date, only few cases have been reported of

Effects of oral exposure to titanium dioxide nanoparticles on gut microbiota and gut-associated metabolism in vivo.

The antibacterial activity of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) has been extensively documented and applied to food packaging or environmental protection. Ingestion of TiO2 NPs via dietary and environmental exposure may pose potential health risks by interacting with gut microbiota. We conducted an animal experiment to investigate the effects of oral exposure to TiO2 NPs on gut microbiota and gut-associated metabolism in Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats were administered with TiO2 NPs (29 ± 9 nm) orally at population-related exposure doses (0, 2, 10, 50 mg kg-1) daily for 30 days. Changes in

Characterization of antibiotic resistance genes in the species of the rumen microbiota.

Infections caused by multidrug resistant bacteria represent a therapeutic challenge both in clinical settings and in livestock production, but the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes among the species of bacteria that colonize the gastrointestinal tract of ruminants is not well characterized. Here, we investigate the resistome of 435 ruminal microbial genomes in silico and confirm representative phenotypes in vitro. We find a high abundance of genes encoding tetracycline resistance and evidence that the tet(W) gene is under positive selective pressure. Our findings reveal that tet(W) is

TCDD modulation of gut microbiome correlated with liver and immune toxicity in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced hyperglycemic mice.

An increasing body of evidence has shown the important role of the gut microbiome in mediating toxicity following environmental contaminant exposure. The goal of this study was to determine if the adverse metabolic effects of chronic 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) exposure would be sufficient to exacerbate hyperglycemia, and to further determine if these outcomes were attributable to the gut microbiota alteration. Adult male CD-1 mice were exposed to TCDD (6μg/kg body weight biweekly) by gavage and injected (i.p.) with STZ (4×50mg/kg body weight) to induced hyperglycemia. 16S rRNA

Long-read metagenomics reveals stable resistome and microbiome in treated Italian slaughterhouse wastewater: a preliminary study.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a major threat to global health, and food production environments are increasingly recognized as potential reservoirs and dissemination points for resistant bacteria and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Slaughterhouse wastewater contains complex microbial communities originating from multiple animal sources and processing activities, yet the effectiveness of current treatment processes in mitigating microbiological and resistome-associated risks remains poorly understood. In this study, we applied high-throughput long-read metagenomic sequencing to ch

Segment-Specific Gut Microbiome and Bile Acid Profiles in Grazing and Stall-Fed Yaks.

The yak is an iconic ruminant of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, yet segment-specific variation in its intestinal microbial functional potential and bile acid profiles under different feeding systems remains insufficiently characterized. Six healthy adult male yaks with similar body weights (320 ± 30 kg) were assigned to grazing (G) or stall-feeding (S) systems, with three animals per group, for a 90-day trial comprising a 10-day adaptation period and an 80-day formal experimental period. The individual yak was considered the experimental unit, and intestinal segments sampled from the same animal w

The Pretreatment Gut Microbiome Is Associated With Lack of Response to Methotrexate in New-Onset Rheumatoid Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Although oral methotrexate (MTX) remains the anchor drug for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), up to 50% of patients do not achieve a clinically adequate outcome. In addition, there is a lack of prognostic tools for treatment response prior to drug initiation. This study was undertaken to investigate whether interindividual differences in the human gut microbiome can aid in the prediction of MTX efficacy in new-onset RA. METHODS: We performed 16S ribosomal RNA gene and shotgun metagenomic sequencing on the baseline gut microbiomes of drug-naive patients with new-onset RA (n = 26). Results

Bacteremia caused by Anaerococcus SPP: Is this an underdiagnosed infection?

The objectives of this study were to report 10 episodes of clinically significant bacteremia caused by species of the genus Anaerococcus isolated between July 2018 and February 2021 from the microbiology laboratory of a tertiary hospital in Granada (Spain). None of the isolates were identified by MALDI-TOF MS, and the definitive species identification was performed by 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. No reference spectra of the Anaerococcus species were present in the MALDI-TOF MS database. Eight isolates were finally identified as A. octavius, one isolate as A. tetradius and the other as A. urinoma

The survival and cecal microbiota profile of broilers subjected to acute heat stress are contingent upon their body weight.

Heat stress (HS) is a growing challenge in poultry farming, driven by rising temperatures, which alters the gut and its microbiota. It is also assumed that body weight might be strongly correlated with a bird's ability to tolerate HS. However, there is no clear evidence of the potential interaction between HS exposure, body weight, and their effects on the host's microbiota in the short term. Hence, this study evaluated the effects of acute HS on the cecal bacterial community in chickens, relative to host body weight, and explored potential links between the microbiota and HS resistance. Comparative analysis of morphology and gut microbiome underlying trophic niche differentiation in three stomatopod species.

Given that predatory strategies and trophic niche in stomatopods vary with raptorial appendage differentiation, a comparative analysis was conducted on three species (Odontodactylus japonicus, Lysiosquilla sulcirostris, and Oratosquilla oratoria) exhibiting distinct habitats and morphologies. The study measured their raptorial appendage morphology, digestive tract morphology, and gut microbiota. The results revealed significant differences in the raptorial appendages and digestive tract morphology among the three stomatopod species. O. japonicus has the significantly largest merus length, meru

Diet-vaccine interactions: SQM Iron and Salmonella vaccination shape poultry gut microbiota.

UNLABELLED: Vaccines to prevent Salmonella are rapidly gaining traction in the poultry industry. Yet how these interventions interact with other management strategies to influence the broader gut microbial community, rather than Salmonella per se, remains poorly understood. Understanding these effects is critical because shifts in the microbiome can alter nutrient metabolism, immune function, and pathogen dynamics in ways that could either enhance or suppress management strategies aimed at improving bird health and food safety. Here, we examine how a live-attenuated Salmonella vaccine (AviPro

A group B streptococcal type VII-secreted LXG toxin mediates interbacterial competition and colonization of the murine female genital tract.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) asymptomatically colonizes the vagina but can opportunistically ascend to the uterus and be transmitted vertically during pregnancy, resulting in neonatal pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis. GBS is a leading etiologic agent of neonatal infection and understanding the mechanisms by which GBS persists within the polymicrobial female genital mucosa has the potential to mitigate subsequent transmission and disease. Type VIIb secretion systems (T7SSb) are encoded by Bacillota and often mediate interbacterial competition using LXG toxins that contain conserved N-termin

The microbiome of the "sterile" pustules in palmoplantar pustulosis.

The skin microbiome influences skin pathophysiology. Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic skin disease characterized by infectious-like pustules on the palms and soles. These pustules are thought to be sterile because bacterial cultures obtained from the pustules are negative. However, culture methods are limited in their ability to identify all bacteria on the skin. We hypothesized that the "sterile" pustules of PPP do not lack bacteria, but rather contain a microbiome. To test this hypothesis, we identified bacteria in "sterile" pustules using non-culture methods. We conducted Sanger a
