Detection and pathological effects of intestinal parasites in Spotted Scat Scatophagus argus: Filisoma spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. as infective agents and their roles in fish inflammatory response.

OBJECTIVE: The Spotted Scat Scatophagus argus, particularly in aquaculture, is commonly affected by intestinal parasitic infections that impact its health and growth. Filisoma spp., an acanthocephalan parasite, and Cryptosporidium spp. cause intestinal inflammation in various marine fish; however, infections with Cryptosporidium spp. or co-infection with these parasites have not been identified in Spotted Scat. METHODS: Host-parasite interactions in fish, including the inflammatory responses of the intestine, were investigated in 32 cultured Spotted Scat from Songkhla, Thailand. The study use

Acute phase response and oxidative stress in coccidiosis: A review in domestic animals.

Coccidiosis is a highly significant disease in domestic animals due to its global distribution and economic impact. The occurrence of oxidative stress (OS) and the acute phase response (APR) play crucial roles in the development of coccidiosis, thereby contributing to the pathogenicity of coccidia. A range of triggers including parasitic infection, can induce the APR. This response encompasses a set of hormonal and metabolic changes to restore body stability and improve the body's healing capabilities. Ovine coccidiosis has the potential to cause OS, which can be prevented and treated through

Differential diagnosis of Eimeria species in farmed Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica).

Similarly to poultry industry, coccidiosis may cause significant economic losses also in the commercial quail industry, an emerging sector undergoing uneven development around the world. Although scant and mostly dated, the available literature reports detailed morphological and morphometric features of both oocysts and sporocysts of the Eimeria species hitherto recognized in Japanese quails, i.e. E. tsunodai, E. uzura, E. bateri, and E. fluminensis. Mixed infections are very common in the field and require an accurate differential diagnosis of diverse species of coccidia, identifying the high

A novel serine/threonine protein phosphatase type 5 from second-generation merozoite of Eimeria tenella is associated with diclazuril-induced apoptosis.

Screening the anticoccidial drug targets is very important for developing novel drugs and revealing the molecular basis of drug resistance in coccidia. Due to high effectivity and safety, diclazuril was used widely in the poultry industry. To assess the roles of the serine/threonine protein phosphatase type 5 of second-generation merozoites in Eimeria tenella (EtPP5) in the anticoccidial activity of diclazuril against chicken coccidiosis, EtPP5 was cloned using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and rapid amplification of cDNA ends. Ultrastructural changes in second-generation mer

Apicomplexan parasites in urban corvids: Presence of Toxoplasma gondii DNA and first detection of Lankesterella and Isospora DNA in the brain of Eurasian magpies, Pica pica.

Corvids, including crows, magpies, ravens and jays, are among the most abundant and adaptable bird species in urban and peri-urban environments, where their proximity to humans and domestic animals may facilitate the circulation of parasites. This study aimed at analyzing the presence of DNA of Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum and other coccidia with neurotropism in corvids. A total of 279 brain samples collected at two peri-urban locations in Hungary were examined using molecular methods. The majority of sampled individuals were Eurasian magpies (Pica pica; n = 273). In addition, Eurasian

Isospora habiae n. sp. (Chromista: Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from Red-crowned Ant-tanagers Habia rubica (Vieillot, 1817) (Aves: Passeriformes: Cardinalidae) in South America.

The Red-crowned Ant-tanager Habia rubica (Vieillot, 1817) is a forest-dependent passerine that inhabits the understory of humid forests and is widely distributed throughout Central and South America, extending northward into Mexico. Wild birds may host a broad diversity of parasites, among which coccidia constitute one of the most species-rich and taxonomically complex groups. Within this context, the present study reports a new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 parasitizing Red-crowned Ant-tanagers captured in Itatiaia National Park, a protected area of high ecological vulnerability in sout

Immunomodulatory effects of Eimeria maxima surface antigen (EmSAG) as an IFN-γ inhibitory molecule on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and T cell subsets in chickens.

Eimeria maxima (E. maxima) infection inhibits the expression of IFN-γ, a cytokine that is essential for the Th1 immune response and plays a key role in combating this parasite. In our preliminary investigations, we identified the E. maxima surface antigen (EmSAG) as an inhibitory molecule of IFN-γ. EmSAG was screened and characterised from an E. maxima sporozoite cDNA expression library. The present study aimed to evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of EmSAG on chicken peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and various T cell subsets. We analysed cell proliferation, nitric oxide (NO) rel

Experimental model for the reproduction of necrotic enteritis in turkeys using different Clostridium perfringens strains.

Necrotic enteritis (NE) is a disease affecting poultry caused by virulence factors, primarily toxins, produced by Clostridium perfringens (Cp). Although NE is well documented in turkey flocks, only one study describes its pathogenesis suggesting a protocol for the induction of the disease. The aim of this study was to set up a challenge model for the experimental reproduction of NE in turkeys, in line with clinical signs currently observed in the field. To this purpose, the disease was induced based on the administration of some well-known predisposing factors for chicken (sudden switch to a h

RNG2 tethers the conoid to the apical polar ring in Toxoplasma gondii to enable parasite motility and invasion.

The conoid is a dynamic, tubulin-based structure conserved across the Apicomplexa that undergoes extrusion during egress, gliding motility, and invasion in Toxoplasma gondii. This organelle traverses the apical polar ring (APR) in response to calcium waves and plays a critical role in controlling parasite motility. While the actomyosin-dependent extrusion of the conoid is beginning to be elucidated, the mechanism by which it remains apically anchored to the APR is still unclear. RNG2, a protein localized to both the conoid and the APR, has emerged as a strong candidate for mediating this conne

Organellar genome dynamics of exogenous stages of Eimeria tenella.

BACKGROUND: Coccidia are a group of intracellular protozoal parasites within the phylum Apicomplexa. Eimeria tenella, one of the species that cause intestinal coccidiosis in poultry, can cause significant mortality and morbidity. Diploid oocysts of Eimeria species are shed in the feces of an infected host and must sporulate to achieve infectivity. This process results in eight haploid infectious units, called sporozoites, held within a single oocyst. Each Eimeria spp. parasite possesses a single apicoplast and a single mitochondrion, both of which carry multiple copies of their respective orga
