Capuchin monkeys (Sapajus [Cebus] apella) prefer larger sooner sequence payouts.

The peak-end effect, in which evaluations of experiences are disproportionately influenced by their most intense, most recent, or final moments, is seen consistently in humans but inconsistently in nonhuman primates. Understanding in what species and contexts these biases appear can help us better understand the evolution of these decision-making biases. Previous evidence in monkeys is contradictory, likely due to differences in experimental procedures. Thus, to assess whether capuchin monkeys (Sapajus [Cebus] apella) exhibit such biases, we tested 14 individuals in a manual two-item food sequ

Sensitization of the reinforcing value of high energy density foods is associated with increased zBMI gain in adolescents.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Characterizing behavioral phenotypes that predict increased zBMI gain during adolescence could identify novel intervention targets and prevent the development of obesity. The purpose of this study was to determine if sensitization of the relative reinforcing value (RRV) of high (HED) or low energy density (LED) foods predicts adolescent weight gain trajectories. A secondary aim was to test the hypothesis that relationships between sensitization of the RRV of food and weight change are moderated by delay discounting (DD). SUBJECTS/METHODS: We conducted a prospective, lon

Deficient Decision Making in Pathological Gamblers Correlates With Gray Matter Volume in Medial Orbitofrontal Cortex.

Individuals suffering from pathological gambling (PG) show impaired decision making, but it is still not clear how this impairment is related to other traits and neuroanatomical characteristics. In this study, we investigated how the influence of PG on decision making (1) is connected to different impulsivity facets and (2) how it is related to gray matter volume (GMV) in various brain regions. Twenty-eight diagnosed PG patients and 23 healthy controls completed the cups task to measure decision making. In this task, participants had to decide between safe and risky options, which varied in ex

Prescription Opioid Medication Survey: A Tool to Collect Deep Phenotypic Data on the Multifactorial Pathways to Opioid Use Disorder in Clinical and Population-Based Cohorts.

INTRODUCTION: We are in the midst of an opioid epidemic. In the USA, more than a third of the country knows someone who has died from an opioid overdose. Prescription opioids (e.g., oxycodone, hydrocodone, and fentanyl) are commonly used and misused, and it has been estimated that approximately 8-12% of individuals who misuse opioids will subsequently develop an opioid use disorder (OUD). While emphasis has been placed on understanding OUD and the associated adverse effects, there remains a critical gap in systematically characterizing the multifactorial pathways (e.g., behavioral, clinical, g

Loss Aversion and Current, Former, and Never-Smoking Status.

INTRODUCTION: Loss aversion (LA) is a bias in decision-making wherein potential losses have a greater influence on choices than equivalent gains. Such a bias may protect individuals from harm. Consistent with this idea, lower LA has been measured in individuals who endorse current cigarette smoking as well as other substance use compared to controls matched on important sociodemographic variables (age, gender, and educational attainment). The goal of the present study was to systematically replicate and extend this association between LA and smoking status by comparing those meeting criteria f

Wheel running leads to sex-specific effects on Western diet-associated glucose homeostasis and brain insulin signaling without altering food-related impulsive choice.

OBJECTIVES: There is a clear association between obesity and impulsivity. While exercise can suppress weight gain and decrease impulsive choice (IC), the relationship between impulsivity, the consumption of palatable, energy dense diets, and exercise is unclear. We examined IC before and after Western diet (WD) exposure in rats of both sexes and whether exercise would rescue any diet-mediated increases in IC. Our hypotheses were twofold: first, increased impulsivity would be associated with higher WD preference in a positive feedback loop and second, increased WD consumption would impair both

Impact of scaling up breastfeeding on reducing the global burden of non-communicable diseases in mothers and children: a population-based modelling analysis for 132 low-income and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests breastfeeding offers long-term protective effects against non-communicable diseases (NCDs) later in life in mothers and their offspring. These benefits could be substantial at the population level but have not yet been rigorously quantified. We aimed to estimate the population-level effect of scaling up exclusive breastfeeding on long-term NCD burden in mothers and their offspring in 132 low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: In this population-based modelling analysis, we developed mathematical simulation models based on the population

An investment case for the prevention and management of rheumatic heart disease in the African Union 2021-30: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Despite declines in deaths from rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in Africa over the past 30 years, it remains a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality on the continent. We present an investment case for interventions to prevent and manage RHD in the African Union (AU). METHODS: We created a cohort state-transition model to estimate key outcomes in the disease process, including cases of pharyngitis from group A streptococcus, episodes of acute rheumatic fever (ARF), cases of RHD, heart failure, and deaths. With this model, we estimated the impact of scaling up interven

Clues to maintaining calorie restriction? Psychosocial profiles of successful long-term restrictors.

To combat the obesity epidemic, interventions and treatments often recommend low-calorie dieting. Calorie restriction (CR) as a weight intervention, however, is often unsuccessful, as most people cannot sustain the behavior. Yet one small group has maintained extreme CR over years - members of the CR Society and followers of The CR Way. This study examined stable psychosocial characteristics of these individuals to identify traits that may promote success at long-term CR. In 65 participants, we measured diet, eating behaviors, and personality traits comparing calorie restrictors with two age-,

A bite by the emerald snake, Hapsidophrys smaragdinus Schlegel, 1837 (Colubridae, Colubrinae) causing atopic eczema with comments on the formal documentation of non-front-fanged snakebites.

The mixed quality evidence about non-front-fanged snake bites has included unsupported speculation and presumption; the possible role of atopy and/or primary hypersensitivity have often been prematurely discounted. Described is a medically insignificant bite by a captive African emerald snake, Hapsidophrys smaragdinus Schlegel, 1837 (Colubridae, Colubrinae) that caused the development of moderate Type IV hypersensitivity; the 44-year-old male victim experienced persistent pruritis and an erythematous bite site maculopapular dermatitis that slowly resolved and required 6 days for full resolutio

Hyperbolic discounting: value and time processes of substance abusers and non-clinical individuals in intertemporal choice.

The single parameter hyperbolic model has been frequently used to describe value discounting as a function of time and to differentiate substance abusers and non-clinical participants with the model's parameter k. However, k says little about the mechanisms underlying the observed differences. The present study evaluates several alternative models with the purpose of identifying whether group differences stem from differences in subjective valuation, and/or time perceptions. Using three two-parameter models, plus secondary data analyses of 14 studies with 471 indifference point curves, results

A scoping review of emotion and non-cognitive measures of decision-making ability in older adults by the ARMCADA study.

INTRODUCTION: Decision-making is a complex form of cognitive function that declines with age and is highly susceptible to impairment from dementia due to Alzheimer's and related neurogenerative diseases. Emotions and other non-cognitive assets are also believed to influence decision-making ability. The Advancing Reliable Measurement in Cognitive Aging and Decision-making Ability (ARMCADA) research initiative seeks to understand how measures of emotion and non-cognitive influences of decision-making (ENC DM) have been used in research and clinical settings. The scoping review examined the recen

Effects of Psychopathy on Neurocognitive Domains of Impulsivity in Abstinent Opiate and Stimulant Users.

Background: Psychopathy and substance use disorders (SUDs) are both characterized by neurocognitive impairments reflecting higher levels of impulsivity such as reward-driven decision-making and deficient inhibitory control. Previous studies suggest that psychopathy may exacerbate decision-making deficits, but it may be unrelated to other neurocognitive impairments among substance dependent individuals (SDIs). The aim of the present study was to examine the role of psychopathy and its interpersonal-affective and impulsive-antisocial dimensions in moderating the relationships between dependence

Relationship between impulsivity, hyperactivity and working memory: a differential analysis in the rat.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a behavioural trait that comprises several distinct processes. It is a key feature of many psychopathologies such as mania, addictive disorders or attention deficit-hyperactivity disorders. To date, the aspects of impulsiveness involved in these pathologies have not yet been explicitly defined. In these disorders, sensation or drug seeking and cognitive deficits are closely related, but the nature of these relationships remains largely unknown. A new animal model of impulsiveness based on spontaneous inter-individual differences is proposed here to help clarify the r

More that ACE2? NRP1 may play a central role in the underlying pathophysiological mechanism of olfactory dysfunction in COVID-19 and its association with enhanced survival.

Three mechanisms have been proposed to account for COVID-19 associated olfactory dysfunction; obstruction of the olfactory cleft; epithelial injury and infection of the sustentacular supporting cells, which are known to express ACE2, or injury to the olfactory bulb due to axonal transport through olfactory sensory neurones. The absence of ACE2 expression by olfactory sensory neurones has led to the neurotropic potential of COVID-19 to be discounted. While an accumulating body of evidence supports olfactory epithelial injury as an important mechanism, this does not account for all the features

Lifetime Health and Economic Outcomes of Active Surveillance, Radical Prostatectomy, and Radiotherapy for Favorable-Risk Localized Prostate Cancer.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the lifetime health and economic outcomes of selecting active surveillance (AS), radical prostatectomy (RP), or radiation therapy (RT) as initial management for low- or favorable-risk localized prostate cancer. METHODS: A discrete-event simulation model was developed using evidence from published randomized trials. Health outcomes were measured in life-years and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). Costs were included from a public payer perspective in Australian dollars. Outcomes were discounted at 5% over a lifetime horizon. Probabilistic and scenario analyses quanti

Cannabidiol as a Novel Candidate Alcohol Use Disorder Pharmacotherapy: A Systematic Review.

There is substantial interest in the therapeutic potential of cannabidiol (CBD), a nonpsychoactive cannabinoid found in plants of the genus Cannabis. The goal of the current systematic review was to characterize the existing literature on this topic and to evaluate the credibility of CBD as a candidate pharmacotherapy for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Using a comprehensive search strategy, 303 unique potential articles were identified and 12 ultimately met criteria for inclusion (8 using rodent models, 3 using healthy adult volunteers, and 1 using cell culture). In both rodent and cell culture m

Applications of episodic future thinking in patients with chronic diseases: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic diseases require long-term self-management, but adherence and sustained behavior change remain major challenges in nursing practice. Episodic future thinking (EFT) is a cognitive strategy that may influence intertemporal decision-making and health-related behaviors by increasing the salience of future outcomes. However, its application, implementation, and clinical translation across chronic disease populations have not been comprehensively synthesized. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to map the use of EFT among adults with chronic diseases, characterize
