Facilitating Community Risk Communication for Wide-Area Evacuation during Large-Scale Floods.

Large-scale floods have been occurring more frequently in Japan as a result of current global weather anomalies, yet evacuation procedures face several issues. These include low evacuation rates of citizens, wide-area evacuation by car, and residents who cannot evacuate on their own. For example, in the Kofu Basin, Yamanashi Prefecture, due to the size of the potential inundation area and a population that exceeds 300,000 people spread across 10 municipalities, a large number of residents would have to evacuate across municipal boundaries by car. The author proposed and applied a risk communic

Lightning fatalities in the Transkei sub-region of South Africa.

Lightning is a particularly unsettling product of bad weather. It kills more people than other natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes, but, because lightning usually kills people one at a time, it tends to be an underrated hazard. High risk groups are uneducated, unsheltered and rural people. This study was carried out to determine the incidence of lightning fatalities in the Transkei sub-region. It is a review of records between 1993 and 2004 from the medico-legal autopsies at Umtata General Hospital (UGH). During the study period there were 10,860 autopsies performed on

Posttraumatic stress disorder: clinical features, pathophysiology, and treatment.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PSTD), classified as an anxiety disorder, has become increasingly important because of wars overseas, natural disasters, and domestic violence. After trauma exposes the victim to actual or threatened death or serious injury, 3 dimensions of PTSD unfold: (1) reexperiencing the event with distressing recollections, dreams, flashbacks, and/or psychologic and physical distress; (2) persistent avoidance of stimuli that might invite memories or experiences of the trauma; and (3) increased arousal. Traumatic events sufficient to produce PTSD in susceptible subjects may

Services oriented architectures and rapid deployment of ad-hoc health surveillance systems: lessons from Katrina relief efforts.

During the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, a new city was born overnight within the City of Houston to provide accommodation and health services for thousands of evacuees deprived of food, rest, medical attention, and sanitation. The hurricane victims had been exposed to flood water, toxic materials, physical injury, and mental stress. This scenario was an invitation for a variety of public health hazards, primarily infectious disease outbreaks. Early detection and monitoring of morbidity and mortality among evacuees due to unattended health conditions was an urgent priority and called for d

Predicting Probable Persistent PTSD Following the Sewol Ferry Disaster: Development of an AI Algorithm Based on Psychological Assessments and Biological Markers.

OBJECTIVE: Prolonged post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) carries substantial personal and public-health costs, yet early identification of individuals at risk remains difficult. This study aimed to develop a novel artificial intelligence (AI)-based predictive algorithm using psychological, biological, and psychosocial data collected at initial assessment to enhance early identification of individuals at heightened risk for probable persistent PTSD. METHODS: This study included 88 bereaved family members of the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster, divided into probable persistent PTSD (n=67)

First experience using cultured epidermal autografts in Taiwan for burn victims of the Formosa Fun Coast Water Park explosion, as part of Japanese medical assistance.

On June 27, 2015, a flammable starch-based powder exploded at Formosa Fun Coast in Taipei, Taiwan, injuring 499 people, and more than 200 people were in critical condition with severe burns. Although a cultured epidermal autograft (CEA) was not approved or used in clinical practice, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration requested a Japanese CEA manufacturer to donate CEA for the burn victims as part of international medical assistance. The authors cooperated in this project and participated in the patient selection, wound bed management for CEA, and technical assistance for CEA use. Here, we

[Reactive anxiety crisis and chronic adjustment disorder: a unique case of work injury and suspected occupational disease].

The present study aims to describe a case of work injury and occupational disease which is unique for the type of disease diagnosed, conditions of onset and mode of management by INAIL (Italian National Institute of Insurance for Injuries at Work and Occupational Diseases). A worker, after a verbal animated dispute with some collegues and superiors, had an acute psychiatric agitation attack and went to the nearest emergency room, where he was subjected to clinical exams. No neuropsychiatric alteration was found, but the physicians diagnosed an anxiety crisis reactive to the work environment. C

Hospital evacuation: Exercise versus reality.

INTRODUCTION: The Dutch Major Incident Hospital (MIH) is a standby, highly prepared, 200-bed hospital strictly reserved to provide immediate, large-scale, and emergency care for victims of disasters and major incidents. It has long-standing experience training for various major incident scenarios, including functioning as a back-up facility for the Netherlands. In 1995, the MIH had experience with overtaking an evacuated hospital when that hospital was threatened by flooding. In November 2014, an exercise was performed to transfer an evacuating hospital to the MIH. The scenario again became re

Traumatic stress in earthquake victims in Turkey: Evaluation in terms of claustrophobia and resilience.

BACKGROUND: All traumatic events threaten an individual's sense of safety. However, a distinctive feature of disasters is that they threaten not only the safety of individuals but also that of the entire community. Trauma associated with disasters can affect people in many different ways. AIM: This study aimed to determine the levels of posttraumatic stress and the prevalence of claustrophobia among earthquake survivors following the İzmir earthquake in Turkey and to assess their psychological resilience. METHOD: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 2022 using a known-popu

Quantifying the spatiotemporal associations of flooding on mental health using telehealth call data.

Floods have increased in both frequency and severity in recent decades. National surveys within England have linked flooding to elevated anxiety, depression, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This study analyses daily telephone helpline calls related to mental health problems to assess the spatiotemporal patterns of flood risk and the 2015/2016 winter floods. Spatial analysis categorised postcode districts by flood risk (High, Medium, Low, Very Low) and proximity (Flood, <1 km, 1-5 km, 5-10 km). Interrupted time series and generalised linear models evaluated trends, adjusting for conf

Stature estimation from the scapula measurements using 3D-volume rendering technique by regression equations in the Northern Indian population.

The present study assessed the correlation between the stature and scapular measurements from both sides in order to develop population-specific regression equations to estimate the stature from measurements of the scapula in a contemporary Northern Indian population individually for the left and right sides. A total of 597 cadavers underwent postmortem multidetector computed tomography and subsequent medicolegal autopsy in our department between August 2021 and August 2022. Two hundred samples (100 males and 100 females) were randomly collected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Six l

Trauma-related predictors of deontic reasoning: a pilot study in a community sample of children.

OBJECTIVE: Deontic reasoning (i.e., reasoning about duties and obligations) is essential to navigating interpersonal relationships. Though previous research demonstrates links between deontic reasoning abilities and trauma-related factors (i.e., dissociation, exposure to multiple victimizations) in adults, studies have yet to examine deontic reasoning abilities in children exposed to trauma. Given that social and safety rules (exemplars of deontic reasoning rules) may appear arbitrary for children in the face of trauma exposure, particularly interpersonal violence perpetrated by adults (i.e.,

Why They Stayed and Why They Left-A Case Study from Ellicott City, MD after Flash Flooding.

Ellicott City, MD was devasted by flash flooding in 2016 and 2018. A lack of qualitative research has been conducted on topics related to sense of place and flash flooding, especially in the United States. In this study, we reveal reasons why some who experienced flash flooding continued to stay the flood zone and why some leave. We utilized a phenomenological approach to answer these research questions. Data were generated through in-depth interviews with 19 participants from the Historic District and adjacent neighborhoods in Ellicott City. The most common reasons participants stayed were: (

Preservation of dental evidence following exposure to high temperatures.

The success of the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) process relies upon sufficient post-mortem data being recovered to allow for a meaningful comparison with ante-mortem records of the missing person. Human bodies subjected to prolonged high temperatures, as experienced during the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria, are often reduced to fragile skeletal elements. The dental structures, however, are the most durable tissues of the body and often survive these prolonged high temperatures. Without protecting the fragile remains at the scene and during transportation to the mortuary, disrupt
