Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a rare complication of herpes zoster disease in which reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus infection occurs in the geniculate ganglion causing otalgia, unilateral vesicular eruption in a restricted dermatomal distribution, and peripheral facial paralysis. Dermal infections caused by human pathogenic herpes viruses are common in organ transplant recipients. For a transplant surgeon, it is imperative to remember that viral prophylaxis is essential in the follow-up of the transplant patients. Here, we presented a case of renal transplant and Ramsay Hunt syndrome w

OBJECTIVE: Mastoiditis, subperiosteal abscess and sigmoid vein thrombosis are the most common suppurative complications of acute otitis media (AOM). Luc's abscess, a subperiosteal temporal collection, is an infrequent complication with a particularly benign course.
PATIENTS: Two children, aged 5 years, presented with AOM complicated by an atypical abscess deep to the temporalis muscle, with no evidence for mastoid or zygomatic arch involvement.
INTERVENTION(S): Computed tomographic scan was performed in only 1 child. In both children, treatment included antibiotic therapy, grommet insertion,

We present the case of a 34-year-old man with a 2-year history of pain related to efforts in heavy lifting, beginning in the right ear and radiating to the neck and to the vertex. He underwent multiple negative neuroimaging examinations, until a 3-dimensional computerized tomography scan of the pharyngeal region evidenced an elongated styloid process. A diagnosis of Eagle's syndrome was made. The excision of the elongated styloid process was performed, resulting in complete and lasting pain relief. We focus on Eagle's syndrome and in particular on this atypical presentation.

Aspergillus mastoiditis and skull-base osteomyelitis are extremely rare, even in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of an 81-year-old immunocompetent man, who underwent a mastoidectomy because of unexplained, progressive otalgia in spite of a noninflamed and air-containing middle-ear space. Histopathology yielded Aspergillus fumigatus. When confronted with otitis with an unexpected clinical course a high index of suspicion is required to facilitate early diagnosis and appropriate therapy of a potential lethal Aspergillus infection, even in immunocompetent patients. This seems to be m

The rising numbers of legal cases relating to delay in the diagnosis of acoustic neuroma, combined with the increasing availability of magnetic resonance, is increasing pressure on otologists to make an early definitive diagnosis of cerebellopontine angle tumours. Unilateral or asymmetrical otologic symptoms not explained by external or middle ear disease are elicited in 16.6% of 500 consecutive attenders to an otolaryngology clinic. An agreed policy of risk stratification of patients with unexplained asymmetric otological symptoms is required if expense is to be limited and litigation minimiz

Mucosal melanoma arising in the middle ear or eustachian tube is uncommon. We present a patient with hearing loss and otalgia found to have mucosal melanoma which occurred in the eustachian tube with extension into the middle ear cavity and external ear canal. Otologic clinics was consulted and biopsy of the mass located at the external canal was performed to ascertain the pathological diagnosis. The patient refused immunotherapy and surgery instead of undergoing radiotherapy and died from hepatic metastasis 8 months later. The mucosal melanoma originated from the eustachian tube with extensio

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to estimate the impact of exposure to the World Trade Center (WTC) site on annual and persistent rates of otalgia and hearing impairment among Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) Firefighters and Emergency Medical Service Workers (EMS).
METHODS: Responders completed routine physical health questionnaires at monitoring visits. We used logistic and marginal logistic regression models to explore the association between otalgia and hearing impairment and WTC arrival time.
RESULTS: The highest-exposed group had greater odds of persistent ear sympt

INTRODUCTION: Otogenic brain abscess (OBA) is a rare complication to otitis media, but one with a potentially devastating outcome. Early diagnosis of OBA is crucial for successful treatment. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of OBA in a Danish population and to describe its clinical manifestation, management and outcome.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 93 patients were retrospectively enrolled by diagnosis codes for brain abscess from 1999 to 2010. Records were reviewed to register age, symptoms, clinical findings, co-morbidity, imaging, microbiology and treatment.

Diseases of the temporal bone causing lower cranial nerve palsies are uncommon. In the presence of bony erosion, they are highly suggestive of a malignant process. However, when there is a clear history of otitis externa in an immunocompromised or diabetic patient, a diagnosis of osteomyelitis and secondary inflammatory mass should be considered. We report 4 separate cases of infective skull base lesions causing multiple lower cranial nerve palsies in elderly patients who were not immunocompromised or diabetic, highlighting that this condition is not exclusive to this population.

BACKGROUND: Patients with carcinomas of the upper aero-digestive tract often suffer from ear pain as a tumor associated syndrome. This prospective study examines the predictive and prognostic value of this symptom.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ninety-six consecutive patients who completed a locally radiotherapy of a carcinoma of the oropharynx were prospectively evaluated and followed. Forty-nine out of 96 patients stated the symptom, either spontaneously or after questioning. The 2 groups showed no difference regarding TNM-classification, histology and total dose. Overall survival, local control an

OBJECTIVE: We present a case report and systematic review of acute mastoiditis caused by metastatic lung cancer.
CASE REPORT: A 62-year-old woman developed acute mastoiditis as a complication of otitis media. Cortical mastoidectomy revealed deposits of metastatic non-small cell lung carcinoma around the sigmoid sinus. The patient had previously received treatment for lung cancer, but was thought to be in remission.
DISCUSSION: A literature review confirmed that this is the first reported case of mastoiditis caused by metastatic lung cancer. Only four similar case reports were identified: two

It was the aim of this clinical study to demonstrate the efficacy of 1000 mg acetylsalicylic acid (ASA, CAS 50-78-2) in combination with 60 mg pseudoephedrine (PSE, CAS 90-82-4), compared with placebo, in the symptomatic treatment of nasal congestion associated with the common cold. A further aim was to demonstrate the efficacy of 500 mg ASA + 30 mg PSE and of 1000 mg paracetamol (CAS 103-90-2) + 60 mg PSE (active control) in the symptomatic treatment of nasal congestion. The study was designed as a randomized, two-center, double-blind, double-dummy, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, single-
