With the advance of biotechnology, biological information, rather than biological materials, is increasingly the object of principal security concern. We argue that both in theory and in practice, existing security approaches in biology are poorly suited to manage hazardous biological information, and use the cases of Mousepox, H5N1 gain of function, and Botulinum toxin H to highlight these ongoing challenges. Agglutination and immunofluorescence tests in vitro showed that the ATS used in these experiments cross-reacted with macrophages and RBC. Antibodies specific for murine major histocompatibility gene complex (MHC) class I H-2K and H-2D molecules present on cytotoxic T (Tc) cells have been shown to inhibit their function of target cell lysis. This could only be demonstrated by using a more sensitive assay for T-cell-mediated lysis, and many monoclonal antibodies of different Ig class, origin, and specificity can be shown to inhibit alloreactive as well as MHC-restricted Tc cells. Seven days after peripheral inoculation with an avirulent strain of Semliki Forest virus, the brains of CBA and nude mice exhibited a mononuclear inflammation and spongiform degeneration.
