Ascaris lumbricoides aggregation in relation to child growth status, delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity, and plant anthelmintic use in Madagascar.

The relationships between Ascaris lumbricoides worm burden, growth status, general delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity (DCH) response, and plant anthelmintic use were investigated in a 12-mo prospective survey of 663 children, 4-10 yr old, living in the Ranomafana rainforest, Madagascar. Initial fecal examinations revealed prevalences of 93% for A. lumbricoides, 55% for Trichuris trichuria, and 27% for hookworm. After anthelmintic treatment and a 12-mo reinfection period, 428 of the children participated in worm expulsion studies using pyrantel pamoate, revealing an overdispersed A. lumbricoide

Studies of hypersensitivity reactions to foods in infants and children.

In order to extend previous investigations of adverse reactions to foods performed at this institution, 68 children, aged 5 mo to 15 yr, were studied. All subjects reported a history of adverse reaction to ingestion of one or more of the 14 foods under study. Sixteen of 43 subjects, 3 yr of age or older, had 22 adverse reactions during 94 food challenges with one or more of the 14 foods. All reactions confirmed were to peanut or other nuts, milk, egg, and soy. Skin testing with 1:20 weight/volume concentrations of food extracts applied by the puncture technique produced a net wheal reaction 3

T cell proliferation restricted by HLA class II molecules in patients with hen's egg allergy.

We investigated the synergistic effect of anti-HLA class II monoclonal antibodies on proliferative responses to ovalbumin (OA) of T cell line (TCL) cells from five hen's-egg-sensitive patients. Among the five patients, the proliferation of the TCL cells from two patients with AD who have a low immune reaction was restored by the anti-HLA-DQ monoclonal antibodies, and the proliferation of the TCL cells from the other three patients was inhibited by the anti-HLA-DP monoclonal antibodies. These results suggest that a component of the T cell repertoire reactive with OA in hen's-egg-sensitive patie

Diagnosis and management of skin disorders caused by food allergy.

A major aetiologic role for foods has been demonstrated in urticaria, atopic eczema and dermatitis herpetiformis. In some patients with urticaria, whealing occurs within minutes of the ingestion of a particular food. In most, but not necessarily all cases, this appears to be a consequence of IgE-mediated cutaneous mast cell degranulation, i.e. a classical type I hypersensitivity response. In other patients with recurrent urticaria, the whealing may be provoked by foods by a much slower and more insidious reaction. This type of reaction has been established in the case of several common food ad

[Effect of Hymenolepis nana infection on immunological responses of mice to sRBC].

In an attempt to investigate the effect of Hymenolepis nana infection on immunological responses to sRBC in ICR strain of mice, cellular and humoral immune responses were chronologically monitored after sensitization with sRBC. Mice weighing about 20 g were allocated into artificial and natural infection groups. The shell-free eggs of H. nana were inoculated into mice on the day 0 (initial) and day 10 in the former group, and praziquantel (25 mg/kg/day) was administered for 3 days to the one half of the mice at the 15th day after the first inoculation and to all of the mice in natural infectio

The relevance of anti-food antibodies for the diagnosis of food allergy.

All individuals are exposed to large amounts of potentially immunogenic food proteins. Most people respond by producing IgG, IgA, or IgM antibodies. The presence of such antibodies in serum is a normal, but not necessarily physiologic phenomenon. In certain groups of individuals, such as young infants, persons with a selective IgA deficiency and patients with inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders, especially high levels of such antibodies are commonly found despite complete tolerance to intake of the food in question. Obviously the finding of IgG, IgA or IgM antibodies to food proteins in se

Immunochemistry of food antigens.

The complex mixture of molecules called food contains many types of molecules, some of which cause allergic or pseudo-allergic reactions in some humans. The identification of the antigenic molecules in the various foods and the type of allergic reaction they elicit is important for the satisfactory diagnosis in the individual patient and in the control of modified foods. The study of food antigens by crossed immunoelectrophoresis allows investigations of individual antigens without the interference of other antigens which are present simultaneously. We studied cow's milk electrophoresed into a

Postprandial effect of gastrointestinal hormones and gastric activity in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Altered gut regulation, including motor and secretory mechanisms, is characteristic of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The severity of postprandial symptoms in IBS patients is associated with discomfort and pain; gas-related symptoms such as bloating and abdominal distension; and abnormal colonic motility. The aim of this study was to assess the postprandial response, i.e., gut peptide secretion and gastric myoelectric activity, in patients with constipation-predominant IBS. The study was conducted on 42 IBS patients (14 males, 28 females, mean age 45.1 ± 15.3 years) and 42 healthy participant

Antigenic cross-reactivity between Schistosoma mansoni and peanut: a role for cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants (CCDs) and implications for the hygiene hypothesis.

The antigenic reactivity of constituents of Schistosoma mansoni and peanut (Arachis hypogaea) was investigated to determine whether identical antigenic epitopes possessed by both organisms provided a possible explanation for the negative correlation between chronic schistosome infection and atopy to allergens. Aqueous extracts of peanuts were probed in Western immunoblots with rabbit IgG antibodies raised against the egg, cercarial and adult worm stages of S. mansoni. Several molecules in the peanut extract were antigenically reactive with antibodies from the various rabbit anti-schistosome se

Outcome of double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge tests in 107 children with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Little is known about late phase clinical reactions during oral food challenges and the value of specific IgE in terms of sensitivity and specificity. METHODS: We therefore analysed retrospectively the clinical outcome of 387 oral provocations during double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge tests in 107 children with atopic dermatitis. RESULTS: Eighty-seven (81%) children showed a positive clinical reaction to at least one challenge. The vast majority of children (94%) showed clinical symptoms to one or two allergens. One hundred and thirty-one of 259 (51%) o

Hospital-based patterns of allergen sensitization among 19,787 patients with suspected allergic diseases in Ningbo, China.

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases encompass a range of disorders driven by hypersensitive immune responses to environmental allergens, with increasing global prevalence linked to environmental and lifestyle changes. Given regional variations in allergen sensitization patterns, localized epidemiological data are needed to inform clinical management. METHODS: This single-center, hospital-based retrospective study included 19,787 patients with suspected allergic diseases who underwent serum specific IgE (sIgE) testing between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2021 at the First Hospital Affiliated wit

Identification of a major yolk protein as an allergen in sea urchin roe.

Anaphylaxis after eating sea urchin roe has been reported. However, its major allergens have not yet been identified. The aim of this study was to identify the major allergens of sea urchin roe. Proteins of sea urchin roe were separated by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE). An immunoglobulin (Ig)E-binding protein was detected by immunoblotting using the patient's serum. An allergen isolated from 2DE-gel was identified by peptide mass fingerprinting using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrome

The prevalence of and risk factors for atopy in early childhood: a whole population birth cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: A birth cohort was followed-up to age 4 years to record the development of allergic disorders and to study the influence of genetic and environmental factors. METHODS: Information on family history and environmental factors was obtained at birth, and serum cord IgE was measured. At age 4 years, 1218 children were reviewed. RESULTS: By age 4 years, 27% of the children had symptoms of allergic disease. Period prevalence of asthma increased from 8.7% in infancy to 14.9% at 4 years. Family history of atopy was the single most important risk factor for atopy in children. Sibling atopy

Delayed gastric emptying: whom to test, how to test, and what to do.

Gastroparesis, or delayed gastric emptying, is a common cause of chronic nausea and vomiting as seen in a gastroenterology practice. Diabetic, postsurgical, and idiopathic causes remain the three most common forms of gastroparesis. In addition to nausea and vomiting, symptoms of gastroparesis may include early satiety, postprandial fullness, and abdominal pain. Physiologic changes that may explain symptoms in patients with gastroparesis, in addition to delayed gastric emptying, include impaired fundic accommodation, antral hypomotility, gastric dysrhythmias, pylorospasm, and perhaps visceral h

Recent Insights into the Epidemiology and Management of Anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly developing systemic hypersensitivity reaction that can be life-threatening if not promptly identified and treated. Its global incidence is on the rise, especially among children, though fatal outcomes remain uncommon. This review summarizes the current understanding of anaphylaxis, covering its epidemiology, triggers, acute management, and strategies for long-term prevention, with emphasis on cases caused by food, medications, and insect stings. The estimated lifetime prevalence of anaphylaxis ranges from 0.05% to 2%. In children, food is the primary trigger, w
