A Kudo total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) was performed in 36 elbows in 35 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Of those 35, 4 died, 6 prostheses were revised, and 2 were lost to follow-up. Twenty-four elbows with a mean follow-up of 58 months were radiologically and clinically reviewed. Sixteen were scored as excellent by use of the Mayo score and Hospital for Special Surgery 2 score. The mean increase in active motion was 25 degrees. Two humeral and four ulnar radiologic loosenings were noted. Two early dislocations were successfully treated with closed reduction and cast immobilization, two pati

Total hip replacements have been recorded in the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register since 1987, and recording of the other joint arthroplasties was started in January 1994. After 12 months 1,589 primary arthroplasties had been registered; these referred to 962 knees, 11 ankles, 76 toes, 113 shoulders, 69 elbows, 12 wrists, 335 fingers and 11 carpometacarpal 1 joints. Median age of the patients was 70 years. 80% were women. Rheumatoid arthritis was the predominant reason for joint replacement, except in the case of the knees where the dominant cause was osteoarthrosis (71%) and of shoulders, 28% o

PURPOSE: This study focused on a comparison of mid-term clinical, functional and radiographic outcomes of adults treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), radial head prosthesis (RHP) and resection (RHR).
METHODS: The retrospective evaluation concerned 47 surgically treated patients after a mean follow-up of 53 months. All patients were grouped according to the surgical procedure performed: 15 in the RHP group, 16 in the ORIF group and 16 in the RHR group. At the follow-up, outcome assessment was based on radiographs, range of motion (ROM) and functional rating scores.
RESULTS:

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that a simple overlay device can be used on radiographs to measure radial head and neck height.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty anteroposterior elbow radiographs from 30 patients with a clinical diagnosis of lateral epicondylitis were examined to measure radial head and neck height. Three methods using different points along the bicipital tuberosity as a landmark were used. Method 1 used the proximal end of the bicipital tuberosity, method 2 used the most prominent point of the bicipital tuberosity, and method 3 used a simple over

INTRODUCTION: Late hematogenic infections of joint replacements represent a serious complication. The aim of the study is to assess a patient group with late hematgenic infections of allografts and to propose preventive measures.
METHODS: The restrospective study included patients treated for infectious complications of their joint implants in the 1st Orthopaedic Clinic of the 1st LF UK and FN Motol during the 1991-2004 period. The study included 229 patients in total, of which 149 subjects were females and 80 were males. In 123 subjects their hip joint implant infection was managed, in 102 s

BACKGROUND: We reviewed a consecutive series of patients with a humeral fracture around either an anatomic or a reverse shoulder prosthesis treated with either open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) or revision shoulder arthroplasty. The purposes of the study were to (1) describe the treatment of these fractures by either method, (2) report the outcomes, and (3) assess the validity of a current classification system.
METHODS: Indications for surgery were a displaced unstable fracture, a fracture around a loose humeral stem, or a patient who was unable to tolerate conservative treatment.

BACKGROUND: The stump-socket interface is of utmost importance for prosthetic function in transhumeral amputees. Stability of this connection may be improved using a newly designed subcutaneous implant.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose was to determine the effect of the implant together with customized socket designs on the range of motion of the shoulder and the prosthetic function compared to conventional fitting.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series.
METHODS: The range of motion was measured with scaled metrics and the prosthetic function evaluated with the Southampton Hand Assessment Procedure and the Box

A review of principles and an operative guideline for repair of severely mutilating injuries to the forearm have been set forth. These concepts and their application have been illustrated in a series of clinical cases. The following key concepts have developed from these clinical experiences: 1. The surgeon must evaluate each case based upon the potential for return of sensation and function. One cannot justify the statement that a replanted arm is always superior to a prosthesis, even if its only purpose is cosmetic. 2. Care must be taken in the emergency room to evaluate the entire patient,

BACKGROUND: Population-level data from national arthroplasty registries enable the use and outcomes of arthroplasty procedures to be monitored over time. This study aimed to describe the demographics, indications, and outcomes (up to 15 years) for radial head arthroplasty (RHA) procedures in Australia, as well as the factors associated with an increased likelihood of revision.
METHODS: Individual-level deidentified data on demographics and surgery characteristics, including revision surgery, were obtained from the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry for all

INTRODUCTION: Few multicenter studies have analyzed the outcome of revision surgery of radial head arthroplasties (RHA) in the medium term follow up. The objective is twofold: to determine the factors associated with revision of RHAs and to analyze the results of revision with 2 surgical techniques: isolated removal of the RHA or revision with a new RHA (R-RHA).
HYPOTHESIS: There are associated factors of RHA revision and RHA revision results in satisfactory clinical and functional outcomes.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients were included in this multicenter retrospective study, with all surgic

Malunion in cubitus varus most often results from inadequate supracondylar fracture reduction or from secondary displacement. Treatment of cubitus varus needs an accurate preoperative planning to obtain a good functional and esthetical outcome. Planning based on conventional radiology is source of inaccuracy and clinical results are variable. Developments of computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery (CAOS) and of patient specific instruments (PSI) have made accurate three dimensional (3D) preoperative simulation possible. This original technique based on 3D-osteotomy planning and using PSI was dev

BACKGROUND: As the English-language literature on prosthetic elbow arthroplasty contains only two comparative studies of implants in contemporary use, to our knowledge, comparisons of prosthetic performance is difficult. An improved knowledge of comparative outcomes would be valuable in guiding implant selection.
METHODS: We identified three groups of consecutive patients who had undergone prosthetic elbow arthroplasty with the Souter-Strathclyde, Kudo, or Coonrad-Morrey implant for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. There were thirty-three elbows in each group. All procedures were done b

In irreparable radial head fractures, especially if primary stabilizers of the elbow are damaged, the prosthetic replacement prevents instability and stiffness. Concerns have arisen over the use of bipolar press-fit prostheses due to the frequent finding of osteolysis and the risk of instability if compared to monopolar implants. Our aim was to assess midterm clinical and radiological outcomes of bipolar implants and the influence of osteolysis on proximal pain. Seventeen patients with irreparable fractures of the radial head, treated in acute with the same prosthetic model (rHEAD recon SBI/St

BACKGROUND: The main theoretic advantage of proximal olecranon fracture intramedullary fixation is decreased soft-tissue irritation and, potentially, less subsequent hardware removal. Despite this possible benefit, questions remain as to whether intramedullary devices are capable of controlling olecranon fractures to the same extent as locking plates. This study evaluates the ability of a novel multidirectional locking nail to stabilize comminuted fractures and directly compares its biomechanical performance with that of locking olecranon plates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We implanted 8 stainles

Two patients with high-energy elbow injuries were diagnosed with minimally displaced partial fractures of the radial head that subsequently displaced and were noted to be Essex-Lopresti injuries. The true complexity and instability of the fractures were not immediately obvious. High-energy partial radial head fractures may merit closer observation and evaluation for associated forearm ligament injury.

BACKGROUND: We asked whether open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) or radial head arthroplasty (RHA), common techniques used for the confrontation of displaced or comminuted radial head fractures, are correlated with cartilage wear of the capitulum.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that neither ORIF nor RHA are correlated with capitellar cartilage wear.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: On 5 cadaveric elbow specimens, osteotomies were employed to simulate radial head comminuted fractures followed with ORIF by Herbert screws. Radial heads were also excised from other 5 cadaveric elbow specimens and were

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder of abnormal hemoglobin synthesis that is known to cause glenohumeral avascular necrosis (AVN). Little has been published on the use of shoulder arthroplasty (SA) for the treatment of glenohumeral AVN in SCD. We report on the clinical and radiographic results and postoperative complications following SA in the patient cohort.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed identifying 17 primary SAs (9 hemiarthroplasties, 7 anatomic total SAs, and 1 reverse total SA) in patients with a confirmed diagnosis of SCD and a minimum of 2-year

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate implant survivorship and clinical outcomes following radial head arthroplasty for fracture at long-term follow-ups.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on adult patients who underwent primary uncemented radial head arthroplasty for radial head or neck fractures between 2012 and 2015. Medical records were reviewed to collect information regarding demographics, injury characteristics, reoperations, and revisions requiring implant removal. A bivariate analysis was conducted to identify potential risk factors for reoperation. A Kaplan
