Ethnobotanical knowledge on botanical repellents employed in the African region against mosquito vectors - A review.

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) represent a huge threat for millions of humans and animals worldwide, since they act as vectors for important parasites and pathogens, including malaria, filariasis and important arboviruses, such as dengue, West Nile and Zika virus. No vaccines or other specific treatments are available against the arboviruses transmitted by mosquitoes, and avoidance of mosquito bites remains the best strategy. African regions are usually hit most whose inhabitants are poor, and the use of repellent plants is the only efficient protection against vectors they have. Ethnobotanic

Roles of human CYP2A6 and 2B6 and rat CYP2C11 and 2B1 in the 10-hydroxylation of (-)-verbenone by liver microsomes.

(-)-Verbenone, a monoterpene bicyclic ketone, is a component of the essential oil from rosemary species such as Rosmarinus officinalis L., Verbena triphylla, and Eucalyptus globulus and is used for an herb tea, a spice, and a perfume. In this study, (-)-verbenone was found to be converted to 10-hydroxyverbenone by rat and human liver microsomal cytochrome p450 (p450) enzymes. The product formation was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection at 251 nm. There was a good correlation between activities of coumarin 7-hydroxylation and (-)-verbenone 10-hydroxylation ca

The impact of cleaner processing on nutrient availability in the bleached kraft industry.

The pulp and paper industry has invested heavily over recent years in cleaner processing, to reduce losses and minimise its impact on the environment. Over the past fifteen years, a New Zealand integrated bleached kraft mill has undergone a comprehensive programme of upgrades to increase production, reduce water consumption and streamline its biological treatment process. Whilst the overall discharge of contaminants from the site decreased, the treatment system performance did not show a concurrent improvement as may have been expected. Reduced BOD removal, low dissolved oxygen levels, and poo

Enzymatic Potential and Antifungal Susceptibility Profile of Aspergillus terreus Against Essential Oils.

Aspergillus terreus is a pathogen as well as an industrial organism. Current study deals with in vitro evaluation of A. terreus as a potential candidate for starch-based industries and susceptibility of toxigenic isolates to plant essential oils. Conventionally identified A. terreus soil isolates (n=25) were screened for mycotoxin production by TLC. Non- toxigenic isolates were selected for starch hydrolysis using starch agar. Toxigenic A. terreus were selected for antifungal activity of plant-derived essential oils (Nigella sativa, Elettaria cardamomum, Eucalyptus globulus, Cinnamomum verum C

Leaf Hydraulic Conductance Mediates the Effect of Precipitation on Leaf Nutrients in Subtropical Forests.

Precipitation will increase in some regions and decrease in others. These changes can alter plant nutrient status, and consequently, impact the terrestrial carbon cycle. However, the ecological and physiological mechanisms underlying plant nutrient responses to changes in precipitation remain poorly understood. Here, we propose that both soil nutrients and plant hydraulic traits mediate precipitation effects on leaf nutrients. To test this hypothesis, we measured leaf nutrient and hydraulic traits alongside soil properties across 12 Eucalyptus urophylla plantations along a mean annual precipit

Respiratory health outcomes following co-exposure to subchronic high temperature, episodic wildfire smoke exposure, and high-cholesterol diet.

BACKGROUND: Increased ambient temperature alongside concomitant heatwaves and wildfire smoke imperil human health. We examined whether long-term episodic exposure to wildfire smoke induced greater respiratory injury/inflammation in male rats subchronically housed at elevated temperature or consuming unhealthy, cholesterol-rich diets. Respiratory effects of wildfire eucalyptus smoke exposure (WFES; ∼7mg/m3 particulate matter) were assessed 2h and 24h post-exposure in rats housed at 22 °C (room temperature; RT) consuming normal diet (ND) and exposed to filtered air (FA) or WFES for 1h. METHODS:

Changes in Skin Test Aeroallergen Sensitization in Mexico Over the Past 14 Years and According to Climate.

INTRODUCTION: Aeroallergen exposure has an intra- and extra-domiciliary component and varies according to climatological zones. Mexico is a large country with a great variety of climates. A previous study (2009) evaluated skin prick test results (SPT) in different regions. In this study, we compare previous sensitization patterns from 14y ago with current ones and compare them between different climatological zones. METHODS: Mexican allergists were asked to share their last 100 SPT results in patients with respiratory allergy. Clinics were grouped in (semi)humid vs (semi)dry zones. Results we

Efficacy of menthol on cell viability of lung cancer cell line (A549): bioinformatics study and effect on the expression of the tumor suppressor gene p53.

Lung cancer is among the most common cancers in the world and is currently considered an epidemic on a global scale. Its rate is steadily increasing among men and women. The p53 gene is the most recognized tumor suppressor gene that is mutated in over 50% of human cancers. One of the methods to prevent cancer is the use of plant-based antioxidants. Menthol is a ten-carbon alcohol that is extracted from the pure essential oil of some plants, such as mint, oregano, and eucalyptus, and has food and medicinal uses. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of menthol on lung cancer cells,

In vitro characterization of potential botanicals to reduce infection and improve the rate of wound healing in humans and canines.

Wounds in both humans and canines are injuries that result in damage to the body's tissues. Wounds can range from minor superficial scratches to severe and deep injuries. Complications of wounds, both in humans and canines, can range from mild to severe. Proper wound care and timely treatment are essential to prevent complications and promote healing. One of the most common and concerning complications of wounds is infection. When the skin is broken, bacteria and other pathogens can enter the wound leading to an infection. In severe cases, infections can spread, causing systemic issues and eve

Volatile Organic Compound Monitoring during Extreme Wildfires: Assessing the Potential of Sensors Based on LbL and Sputtering Films.

A new theory suggests that flammable gases generated by heated vegetation, in particular the volatile organic compounds (VOC) common to Mediterranean plants, may, under certain topographic and wind conditions, accumulate in locations where, after the arrival of the ignition source, they rapidly burst into flames as explosions. Hence, there is a need for the development of a system that can monitor the development of these compounds. In this work, a sensor's array is proposed as a method for monitoring the amount of eucalyptol and α-pinene, the major VOC compounds of the Eucalyptus and Pine tre

The development of an oral health charting system for koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus).

The koala is one of Australia's most highly specialized folivores with a diet exclusively of eucalyptus leaves to provide all nutritive needs and therefore requires to be free of oral disease as they are dependent on good dentition for optimal health and quality of life. We developed an oral examination methodology based on protocols for companion animals and human dentistry to chart the oral health of koalas. Thirty free-ranging koalas from South-East Queensland, Australia were examined for general body and oral health. Inspection of the oral cavity was conducted for the presence or absence o

Correlation Between Cryptococcus Infection and the Nasal Mycobiota in a Population of Free-Ranging Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) in New South Wales, Australia.

Cryptococcosis is a fungal disease in humans and animals, caused by the Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii species complexes. Clinical cryptococcosis primarily manifests as upper respiratory tract disease; however, dissemination to other organs, particularly the brain, can occur. Nasal colonisation and subclinical cryptococcosis are common in koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) due to their shared environmental niche with Cryptococcus: Eucalyptus trees. However, for reasons that remain unclear, the prevalence of clinical disease is low in koalas. Interactions between respiratory patho

Antioxidant Activity as an Indicator of the Efficiency of Plant Extract-Mediated Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles.

The green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using a diverse range of plant species has been extensively reported. Despite the success achieved by biogenic synthesis, there are problems with the control and prediction of the properties of ZnO NPs, due to phytochemical diversity between plant species. In this sense, the main objective of our work was to investigate the effect of the antioxidant activity (AA) of plant extracts on the physicochemical characteristics of ZnO NPs (production yield, chemical composition, polydispersity index (PDI), surface charge (ζ-potential) and averag
