Differences in clinical ocular outcomes between exogenous and endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Sporothrix: a systematic review of published literature.

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is an implantation mycosis caused by Sporothrix species prevalent worldwide, which occasionally can also result in intraocular infection presenting as an exogenous or endogenous infection (disseminated sporotrichosis). Knowledge in its clinical recognition and management is limited. AIMS: To systematically review and analyse data from published literature with a view to comparing clinical outcomes between exogenous and endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Sporothrix. METHODS: Case reports of intraocular sporotrichosis, published from 1960 to 2016, were retrieved fr

Reconstruction of complex orbital exenteration defects: a single center's experience with a five-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Orbital exenteration presents a challenge to the reconstructive surgeon. Defects may be treated with split skin grafts, local advancement flaps, or free flap coverage. There are few published series showing the long-term outcomes of reconstruction. Our results, with at least a 5-year follow-up, are presented. METHODS: A retrospective review of 15 immediate reconstructions after orbital exenterations for malignancies in 12 patients at a tertiary referral center over a 5-year period, was done. All flaps were followed up for at least 5 years (mean, 75 months; range, 3-118 months). R

Clinicopathological features of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy: Report of two cases.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is an extremely rare, pigmented neoplastic entity of neural crest origin. Histological and immunohistochemical profiles indicate the presence of two components, small rounded neuroblast-like cellular areas and areas with large melanin-containing cells which consist of combination of neural, melanocytic, and epithelial cell types. Here we present two interesting cases of infants with MNTI which have different clinicopathological features. The first case is a 3-month-old female with rapidly growing MNTI involving the lacrimal sac and inferior wal

Anophthalmic socket and orbital implants. Role of CT and MR imaging.

The role of CT and MR imaging examination of orbital implants and the anophthalmic socket is expanding constantly. As the imaging techniques gain refinement and resolution, the list of potential clinical application grows. Frequent clinical-radiologic queries regarding the anophthalmic socket include neuro-radiologic findings with congenital anophthalmia or bilateral microphthalmia, the vascularization or position of an orbital implant following enucleation, or orbital recurrence of tumor following enucleation. Common clinical-radiologic questions regarding orbital implants relate to the assoc

The prevalence of anophthalmic socket syndrome and its relation to patient quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Following removal of the eye, soft tissue changes of the eyelids and orbit may develop into an anophthalmic socket (AS) syndrome, which is often attributed to orbital volume deficiency. While adequate primary orbital volume replacement is nowadays standard of care, patients may still present with facial asymmetry. The aim of this study is to provide insights into these changes and their impact on patient quality of life (QoL). METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 59 patients with longstanding ocular prosthetic wear after enucleation or evisceration surgery. The alignment, function, a
