Optimal use of red cell volume distribution width-to-platelet ratio to exclude cirrhosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major public health issue worldwide as it may cause serious liver diseases such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Ruling out cirrhosis is important when treating chronic hepatitis B (CHB). The aim of this study was to compare the performance of the aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI), fibrosis score based on four factors (FIB-4), and red cell volume distribution width-to-platelet ratio (RPR) in diagnosing liver fibrosis stages and to identify new cut-off values to rule out cirrhosis. METHODS: Betw

Optic Nerve Head Volumetry by Optical Coherence Tomography in Papilledema Related to Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.

PURPOSE: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) leads to optic nerve head swelling and optic atrophy if left untreated. We wanted to assess an easy to perform volumetric algorithm to detect and quantify papilledema in comparison to retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) analysis using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS: Participants with and without IIH underwent visual acuity testing at different contrast levels and static perimetry. Spectralis-OCT measurements comprised standard imaging of the peripapillary RNFL and macular ganglion cell layer (GCL). The optic nerve head volume (ONHV

Metal/LiF/Li2O Nanocomposite for Battery Cathode Prelithiation: Trade-off between Capacity and Stability.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are currently dominating the portable electronics market and supplying power for electric vehicles and grid-level storage. However, lithium loss in the formation cycle at the anode side reduces the energy density of state-of-the-art LIBs with carbon anode materials. This situation will be even more severe for future LIBs using high-capacity Si-based anode materials. In this study, a transition metal-based nanocomposite with built-in lithium source was synthesized, featuring Fe nanodomains with a size of ∼5 nm uniformly dispersed in a hybrid Li2O and LiF matrix with

Tumour-Associated Tissue Eosinophilia in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma- A Boon or a Bane?

INTRODUCTION: The infiltration of tumour stroma by eosinophils, Tumour-Associated Tissue Eosinophilia (TATE) is known to modulate the evolution of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC). Identification of eosinophils in the inflammatory stroma has been proven to be an important factor in prognostication of malignant tumours including cancers of mouth, oesophagus, larynx, pharynx, breast, lung, intestine and genitourinary tract. AIM: Our study aimed to assess the role of TATE as a prognosticator in OSCC as visualized by Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) and congo red staining. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

CLIMBER: Climatic niche characteristics of the butterflies in Europe.

Detailed information on species' ecological niche characteristics that can be related to declines and extinctions is indispensable for a better understanding of the relationship between the occurrence and performance of wild species and their environment and, moreover, for an improved assessment of the impacts of global change. Knowledge on species characteristics such as habitat requirements is already available in the ecological literature for butterflies, but information about their climatic requirements is still lacking. Here we present a unique dataset on the climatic niche characteristic

The development of a simple scaffold of axon tracts in the brain of the embryonic zebrafish, Brachydanio rerio.

We have examined neuronal differentiation and the formation of axon tracts in the embryonic forebrain and midbrain of the zebrafish, between 1 and 2 days postfertilisation. Axons were visualised with three techniques; immunocytochemistry (using HNK-1 and antiacetylated tubulin antibodies) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labelling in whole-mounted brains, and transmission electron microscopy. Differentiation was monitored by histochemical staining for acetylcholinesterase (AChE). These independent methods demonstrated that a simple grid of tracts and commissures forms the initial axon scaffold

A Smart Service System for Spatial Intelligence and Onboard Navigation for Individuals with Visual Impairment (VIS4ION Thailand): study protocol of a randomized controlled trial of visually impaired students at the Ratchasuda College, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Blind/low vision (BLV) severely limits information about our three-dimensional world, leading to poor spatial cognition and impaired navigation. BLV engenders mobility losses, debility, illness, and premature mortality. These mobility losses have been associated with unemployment and severe compromises in quality of life. VI not only eviscerates mobility and safety but also, creates barriers to inclusive higher education. Although true in almost every high-income country, these startling facts are even more severe in low- and middle-income countries, such as Thailand. We aim to use

Development and validation of an interpretable machine learning model for pulmonary heart disease in patients with pneumoconiosis.

BACKGROUND: Pneumoconiosis patients with pulmonary heart disease (PHD) face an elevated risk of mortality. Early identification of individuals at higher risk of PHD is important for timely risk stratification and clinical management. However, few risk-screening models have been specifically developed for pneumoconiosis in primary care settings, where access to advanced diagnostic resources may be limited. Therefore, this study developed and validated a machine learning model based on routinely available data to support early risk stratification and clinical decision-making in resource-limited

H3-MOSAIC: multimodal generative AI for semantic place detection from high-frequency GPS on H3 grids in mental health geomatics.

BACKGROUND: Mental-health geomatics require reliable ways to convert high-frequency GPS trajectories into meaningful place types that support indicators such as homestay, location entropy, and spatial extent of daily activities. Raw coordinates are typically noisy and carry little semantic information. We introduce H3-MOSAIC(H3-based Multimodal OSM-and-Satellite AI for Classification), a multimodal generative framework that fuses OpenStreetMap (OSM) building text and satellite imagery on H3 grids to infer place semantics from high-frequency GPS. METHODS: Raw GPS was smoothed by minute-level s

MgSO4 alleviates anxiety-like behaviours in mice after traumatic brain injury by inhibiting astrocytic TRPM7 in the amygdala.

BACKGROUND: Reports indicate anxiety as one of the most prevalent mental modifications that occur following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 7 (TRPM7) is extensively distributed throughout the nervous system. It regulates intracellular homeostasis of calcium and magnesium ions, regulates the functions of glial cells, including astrocytes in the central nervous system, influences the inflammatory cascade, and may play a significant role in anxiety pathogenesis. However, the potential of astrocytic TRPM7 in the treatment of TBI-induced anxiety remains largely

Promoter DNA Methylation Metrics and Gene Expression in Human CD3+ T Cells: Sensitivity to Analytical Choices.

Background/Objectives: Promoter DNA methylation is conventionally summarised as a regional mean. Two alternatives have been proposed to capture information the mean discards: the concurrence ratio derived from partially methylated bisulfite reads (CAMDA) and single-CpG Shannon (β-) entropy. Benchmarks of such metrics typically report one coefficient per metric on a single gene set at a single aggregation scale. We asked how far that comparison depends on analytical choices that are rarely reported. Methods: Matched whole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) and RNA-seq from one donor of human CD

ThaCoder: an explainable deep learning framework for thalassemia screening using routine complete blood count: a multi-center validation study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Thalassemia remains a global public health challenge, yet definitive diagnosis via genetic testing is often restricted by high costs and infrastructure requirements. We aimed to develop and externally evaluate an interpretable deep-learning framework using routine complete blood count (CBC) parameters for thalassemia screening. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using 2317 CBC records from the internal derivation cohort, we implemented a two-stage analytical architecture. First, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with Varimax rotation reduced nine continuous parameters to three factor

Uncertainty-aware registration for probabilistic margin assessment in renal cell carcinoma ablation.

Quantitative assessment of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) ablation margins requires reliable registration of pre- and post-ablation images. However, ablation-related tissue changes weaken local anatomical correspondence, making deformation estimates potentially non-unique. We developed an uncertainty-aware registration framework for more reliable margin estimation.
Approach: An ensemble of plausible registrations was generated by stochastically sampling key registration settings, including the registration mask, similarity metric, B-spline grid spacing, and initial alignment, with Latin hyperc

Finite-difference analysis of excitonic spectra in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides/hBN heterostructures.

CONTEXT: We theoretically study the excitonic properties in semiconductor transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers (ML-TMDs)(WSe 2 , WS 2 , MoSe 2 , MoS 2 , and MoTe 2 ) encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Excitonic binding energies and full non-hydrogenic Rydberg series (s, p, and d states) are calculated. As a first validation, the binding energies of the 1s-5s states of WSe 2 /hBN are reproduced to less than 2 meV ( < 1 % ) over the entire range of thicknesses N ∈ [ 0 , ∞ [ , and the separation Δ 12 = 127.8  meV reproduces the experimental value without ad

A framework to identify structured behavioral patterns within rodent spatial trajectories.

Animal behavior is highly structured. Yet, structured behavioral patterns-or "statistical ethograms"-are not immediately apparent from the full spatiotemporal data that behavioral scientists usually collect. Here, we introduce a framework to quantitatively characterize rodent behavior during spatial (e.g., maze) navigation, in terms of movement building blocks or motor primitives. The hypothesis that we pursue is that rodent behavior is characterized by a small number of motor primitives, which are combined over time to produce open-ended movements. We assume motor primitives to be organized i
