Urodynamic findings in children with cerebral palsy.

AIM: More than one-third of children with cerebral palsy are expected to present with dysfunctional voiding symptoms. The voiding dysfunction symptoms of the cerebral palsy patients in the present study were documented. METHODS: Of the study group, 16 were girls and 20 were boys (mean age: 8.2 years). Children with cerebral palsy were evaluated with urodynamics consisting of flow rate, filling and voiding cystometry, and electromyography findings of the external urethral sphincter to determine lower urinary tract functions. Treatment protocols were based on the urodynamic findings. Anticholin

Modified ileal neobladder for continent urinary diversion: experience and results.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the surgical technique we currently use for the construction of an orthotopic ileal neobladder. We report our experience and functional results of the first 35 cases. METHODS: Since 1993, 35 men have been treated with an ileal neobladder substitute after cystoprostatectomy for bladder cancer. According to the technique we call "a modified S-ileal neobladder," we place emphasis, first, on the complete detubularization of a smaller segment of bowel and its folding in an S configuration without creating a nipple mechanism, and second, on an oblique intramural ureteral rei

Clinical outcomes of non-surgical management of detrusor leak point pressures above 40 cm water in adults with congenital neurogenic bladder.

AIMS: Neurogenic bladders (NGB) with detrusor leak point pressures >40 cm H2 O (dLPP > 40) have been associated with deterioration of renal function in children with myelomeningocele. For these children, careful pressure management preserves renal function. However, similar evidence is lacking in adult congenital urology (ACU) patients with NGB. We describe renal functional outcomes of non-surgical management of adults with dLPP > 40 or premicturition detrusor pressure (PMDP) >40 cm H2 O, consisting of close follow-up with urodynamic studies (UDS) and renal ultrasound (RUS), paired with adjust

Patients With Spina Bifida and Their Caregivers' Feelings About Intermittent Bladder Catheterization in Brazil and Germany: A Correlational Study.

UNLABELLED: A major complication for individuals with spina bifida (SB) is managing their neurogenic bladder. For many, this process evokes negative feelings associated with guilt, dependence, and lack of self-worth. PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to compare feelings that hinder the performing of intermittent bladder catheterization reported by individuals with SB and their families in two countries of different sociocultural characteristics: Brazil and Germany. DESIGN AND METHODS: Quantitative and comparative study with convenience sampling. The sample comprised 200 SB patients and their

Using Mitrofanoff's principle and Monti's technique as a surgical option for bladder augmentation with a continent stoma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Hydronephrosis, reflux and renal failure are serious complications that occur in patients with neurogenic bladder associated with myelomeningocele. When the bladder compliance is lost, it is imperative to carry out surgery aimed at reducing bladder storage pressure. An ileocystoplasty, and for patients not suitable for intermittent catheterization, using the Mitrofanoff principle to form a continent stoma and the subsequent closure of the bladder neck, can be used. We report here, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, an association between two previously described tec

Latent classes analysis and associated factors of knowledge of intermittent catheterization in neurogenic bladder management among medical staff.

Previous studies have demonstrated that intermittent catheterization (IC) is an effective management strategy for neurogenic bladder (NB), but the knowledge of medical staff in this field remains under-researched. This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the profile of medical staff's knowledge regarding IC in NB management and its associated factors. In August 2023, we conducted a convenience sampling survey involving 207 eligible medical staff from high-prevalence departments of NB at a tertiary general hospital in Nanchong, Southwest China. Data analysis was performed using latent class

Emergence of antimicrobial-resistant uropathogens isolated from pediatric patients with cystitis on daily clean intermittent catheterization.

One of the major complications of clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is urinary tract infection (UTI). Recent reports showed that community-acquired UTIs caused by antimicrobial-resistant pathogens were gradually presenting in adults. However, there have been few reports about UTIs caused by antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in pediatric patients. Therefore, we retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of 45 children with CIC due to neurogenic bladder dysfunction from January 2010 to March 2013. Sixty-two episodes of cystitis occurred in 27 patients. Seventy bacterial strains were isola

Effect of Procedure Setting on Urinary Retention After Bulkamid Injection.

IMPORTANCE: Urethral Bulkamid is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved nonsurgical treatment for stress urinary incontinence and stress-predominant mixed urinary incontinence due to intrinsic sphincter deficiency. This procedure is commonly performed in the operating room (OR). An office Bulkamid procedure offers an alternative with benefits, including reduced cost, increased accessibility, and avoidance of anesthesia. Urinary retention is a known complication of Bulkamid. Data comparing retention rates between OR and office settings remains limited. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to com

Non-Surgical Management of Urinary Incontinence.

Urinary incontinence management varies depending on the type of incontinence and severity of symptoms. Types of incontinence include stress (SUI), urge or overactive bladder (OAB), mixed, neurogenic, and overflow incontinence. First-line treatment for OAB and SUI is nonpharmacologic management. Behavioral therapy is first-line treatment for urge incontinence. Vaginal mechanical devices (cones, pessaries, and urethral plugs), pelvic floor muscle training, and electroacupuncture are recommended as first-line treatment for women with SUI. Biofeedback and electric muscle stimulation can be adjunct

Reoperative Anorectal Procedures in Patients with Anorectal Malformations - Is Bladder Function Affected?

BACKGROUND: Anorectal malformations (ARM) are associated with neurogenic bladder. The traditional surgical ARM repair is a posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP), which is believed to have a minimal effect on bladder dynamics. However, little is known about the effects of reoperative PSARP (rPSARP) on bladder function. We hypothesized that a high rate of bladder dysfunction existed in this cohort. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of ARM patients undergoing rPSARP at a single institution from 2008 to 2015. Only patients with Urology follow-up were included in our analysis. Data

[Injection of botulinum toxin (BTX-A) in children with bladder dysfunction due to detrusor overactivity].

INTRODUCTION: bladder dysfunction causes urinary incontinence and kidney damage in children. When treatment with anticholinergics and intermittent bladder catheterization fails, the alternative therapy is bladder augmentation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: between 2005 and 2009, a prospective study was carried out with Botox(®) injected into the detrusor of children suffering from high-pressure bladder despite anticholinergic treatment. We assessed their urodynamic, clinical and radiological evolution prior to and at 4 weeks, 6 months and 1 year after the injection (10 u/kg of weight up to 300 u). Re
