Case Report: Successful Corneal Crosslinking in a Patient with Corneal Ectasia Associated with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

SIGNIFICANCE: Corneal ectasia can be a complication of Stevens-Johnson syndrome. When detected in a timely manner, corneal crosslinking can be a safe treatment. This is an important association to highlight that early diagnosis and treatment can prevent the need for invasive surgical procedures such as keratoplasty. PURPOSE: This study aimed to report a successful accelerated epithelium-off corneal crosslinking in a rare case of corneal ectasia secondary to Stevens-Johnson syndrome. CASE REPORT: A 25-year-old Indian man presented with a progressive visual acuity decline 5 years after an acut

In vivo confocal microscopy in ophthalmology: research trends from a bibliometric analysis.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is a pivotal imaging tool in ophthalmology, enabling the non-invasive, real-time visualisation of corneal microstructures. Its clinical importance lies in its ability to diagnose and monitor a wide range of corneal and ocular surface conditions at a cellular level, enhancing early detection and treatment outcomes. BACKGROUND: IVCM enables detailed visualisation of corneal structures and has broad applications in diagnosing and managing corneal and ocular surface diseases. Despite its widespread use, no global bibliometric analysis of IVCM

Induced pluripotent stem-cell-derived corneal epithelium for transplant surgery: a single-arm, open-label, first-in-human interventional study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The loss of corneal epithelial stem cells from the limbus at the edge of the cornea has severe consequences for vision, with the pathological manifestations of a limbal stem-cell deficiency (LSCD) difficult to treat. Here, to the best of our knowledge, we report the world's first use of corneal epithelial cell sheets derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to treat LSCD. METHODS: This non-randomised, single-arm, clinical study involved four eyes of four patients with LSCD at the Department of Ophthalmology, Osaka University Hospital. They comprised a woman aged 4

This report describes the clinical features and management in a case of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) with bilateral tarsal conjunctival keratinization. A 32-year-old male presented with VKC since childhood that had exacerbated in the eight years prior to presentation. Examination revealed partial limbal stem cell deficiency in both eyes, with keratinization of the superior tarsal conjunctiva. The corresponding areas of the cornea exhibited punctate keratopathy in both eyes. To address this, the patient underwent excision of the conjunctival keratinization in both eyes. The resultant bare

An Amplifying Cascade of Contact Lens-Related End-of-Day Hyperaemia and Dryness Symptoms.

End-of-day (EOD) symptoms of dryness are too often the cause of poor soft contact lens (SCL) tolerance and abandonment of wear. This review examines an amplifying cascade model for these symptoms, which involve thin tear layers on contact lens (CL) front surfaces being susceptible to evaporation-related short tear breakup (TBU) times. Susceptibility to faster tear loss by evaporation may be exacerbated by other forms of tear instability, such as lipid and mucin deficiencies as well as lens surface soiling. Bulbar and palpebral conjunctival hyperaemia and associated faster evaporation of warmer

Consequences of exposure to particulate matter on the ocular surface: Mechanistic insights from cellular mechanisms to epidemiological findings.

Exposure to air pollutants, especially in the case of particulate matter (PM), poses significant health risks throughout the body. The ocular surface is directly exposed to atmospheric PM making it challenging to avoid. This constant exposure makes the ocular surface a valuable model for investigating the impact of air pollutants on the eyes. This comprehensive review assembles evidence from across the spectrum, from in vitro and in vivo investigations to clinical studies and epidemiological studies, offering a thorough understanding of how PM10 and PM2.5 affect the health of the ocular surfac

Effect of erythropoietin on healing of corneal epithelial defects in rabbits.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Corneal epithelial defects may heal slowly in patients with diabetes, limbal stem cell deficiency, extensive chemical burns or anesthetized corneas. Studies have shown that erythropoietin, a glycoprotein hormone that promotes red blood cell proliferation and inhibits apoptosis of erythroid progenitors, may also exert a cytoprotective, antiapoptotic effect on nonhematopoietic cells. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of erythropoietin on the healing process of corneal epithelial erosions in rabbit eyes. METHODS: Fifteen New Zealand albino rabbits were divided into 3
