Clathrate Ba8Au16P30: the "gold standard" for lattice thermal conductivity.

A novel clathrate phase, Ba8Au16P30, was synthesized from its elements. High-resolution powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to establish the crystal structure of the new compound. Ba8Au16P30 crystallizes in an orthorhombic superstructure of clathrate-I featuring a complete separation of gold and phosphorus atoms over different crystallographic positions, similar to the Cu-containing analogue, Ba8Cu16P30. Barium cations are trapped inside the large polyhedral cages of the gold-phosphorus tetrahedral framework. X-ray diffraction indicated that one out of 15 cr

Structure and dynamic organization of centromeres/prekinetochores in the nucleus of mammalian cells.

Although considerable research has been focused on understanding the structure and molecular organization of the centromere-kinetochore complex of mitotic chromosomes, few reports have dealt with the centromere (prekinetochore) in the interphase nucleus. In the present study, we utilized anti-centromere antibodies from the serum of patients with the autoimmune disease, scleroderma CREST (calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dismotility, sclerodactyly, telangiectasia), as probes to investigate the structure and morphogenesis of the centromere in interphase nuclei of three cell lines usi

Interface-Dependent Transport and Resistive Switching in TiO2 and TiO2:Co Nanotubes for Resistive Memories.

In this work, TiO2 and TiO2:Co nanotubes were fabricated via electrochemical anodization, using Ti (99.99% purity) and Ti/Co foils as the anode and cathode. Cobalt was deposited onto the Ti foils using the DC magnetron sputtering technique under a working pressure of 2.5 × 10-2 Torr. The resulting nanotubes exhibited wall nodes and an average length of 308.6 ± 13.07 nm for TiO2 and 92.63 ± 2.846 nm for TiO2:Co. The synthesized structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), identifying anatase as the predominant phase, accompanied by an amorphous halo. Two types of MSM devices were f

Counterion-Mediated Humidity Modulation of Electronic Transport in Pristine MWCNT/TOCNF Composites.

Humidity-driven electrical responses in carbon-cellulose composites are commonly attributed to matrix swelling. However, in TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose (TOCNF), water uptake also releases Na+ counterions from carboxylate residues, enabling interfacial polarization via image-charge interactions that can modulate junction-limited electronic transport. Here, we formulate aqueous inks in which TOCNF disperses pristine (nonfunctionalized) multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) without covalent modification, yielding homogeneous, spray-processable composite films. Using DC electrical measurements und

An organic array of quantum corrals modulated by the gold herringbone electronic superlattice.

The periodic herringbone reconstruction on the surface of Au(111) consists of alternating face-centered-cubic (fcc) and hexagonal-closed-packed (hcp) sites separated by dislocation lines and elbows. This well-known arrangement acts as an electronic superlattice for surface-state electrons, creating a mini-gapped band structure with a modulated electronic density. This rich and fascinating geometrical and electronic landscape has countless times served as a platform for molecular self-assembly and on-surface synthesis of carbon-based nanoarchitectures as well as a template for 2D material growt

Reversing the Natural Drug Resistance of Gram-Negative Bacteria to Fusidic Acid via Forming Drug-Phospholipid Complex.

Drug resistance substantially compromises antibiotic therapy and poses a serious threat to public health. Fusidic acid (FA) is commonly used to treat staphylococcal infections, such as pneumonia, osteomyelitis and skin infections. However, Gram-negative bacteria have natural resistance to FA, which is almost restrained in cell membranes due to the strong interactions between FA and phospholipids. Herein, we aim to utilize the strong FA-phospholipid interaction to pre-form a complex of FA with the exogenous phospholipid. The FA, in the form of an FA-phospholipid complex (FA-PC), no longer inter

LiaSR two-component system modulates the oxidative stress response in Streptococcusmutans.

Many commensal bacteria of the human oral microbiome can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS will inhibit the colonization of Streptococcusmutans (S.mutans), a major pathogenic bacteria in dental caries. The LiaSR two-component system in S.mutans can sense and respond to environmental oxidative stress. However, the molecular details of the LiaSR two-component system and oxidative stress response have been unclear. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of the LiaSR two-component system and the mediated oxidative stress response in S.mutans. We performed the H2O2

pH-sensing hybrid hydrogels for non-invasive metabolism monitoring in tumor spheroids.

The constant increase in cancer incidence and mortality pushes biomedical research towards the development of in vitro 3D systems able to faithfully reproduce and effectively probe the tumor microenvironment. Cancer cells interact with this complex and dynamic architecture, leading to peculiar tumor-associated phenomena, such as acidic pH conditions, rigid extracellular matrix, altered vasculature, hypoxic condition. Acidification of extracellular pH, in particular, is a well-known feature of solid tumors, correlated to cancer initiation, progression, and resistance to therapies. Monitoring lo

Graphene-Binding Peptide in Fusion with SARS-CoV-2 Antigen for Electrochemical Immunosensor Construction.

The development of immunosensors to detect antibodies or antigens has stood out in the face of traditional methods for diagnosing emerging diseases such as the one caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The present study reports the construction of a simplified electrochemical immunosensor using a graphene-binding peptide applied as a recognition site to detect SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. A screen-printed electrode was used for sensor preparation by adding a solution of peptide and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The peptide-rGO suspension was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spect

BACKGROUND: Noninvasive detection of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with high specificity and sensitivity can greatly facilitate identification of at-risk populations for earlier, more effective intervention. AD patients exhibit a myriad of retinal pathologies, including hallmark amyloid β-protein (Aβ) deposits. METHODS: Burden, distribution, cellular layer, and structure of retinal Aβ plaques were analyzed in flat mounts and cross sections of definite AD patients and controls (n = 37). In a proof-of-concept retinal imaging trial (n = 16), amyloid probe curcumin formulation was determined and proto

Underpinning hierarchical anisotropic structure formation in soy protein high-moisture extrudates by Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Plant-based meat alternatives are fibrous anisotropic food protein products that mimic the texture and palatability of animal-based foods. The main industrially scalable production technique for manufacturing such structured protein materials is high-moisture extrusion, which involves the thermo-mechanical processing, and subsequent cooling, of a hot protein melt in the presence of shear and temperature gradients. Yet, the complex mechanisms governing fibrous structure formation in plant-protein extrudates are poorly characterised, in turn limiting the rational design and optimisation of the e

Structural and Plasmonic Evolution in Mixed-Dimensionality Bismuth/Graphene Heterostructures.

Mixed-dimensionality heterostructures of low-dimensional bismuth (Bi) with two-dimensional (2D) graphene are of interest in a variety of application fields ranging from nanoelectronics, next-generation batteries, and (photo)catalysis to plasmonics. We here explore the evolution of the morphology and structure of low-dimensional Bi/graphene heterostructures by high-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy ((S)TEM). To this end, we deposit low-dimensional Bi nanostructures onto suspended monolayer graphene membranes via physical vapor deposition (PVD). This enables us to study intr

Antimicrobial activity and biocompatibility of alpha-silver tungstate nanoparticles.

The growing global threat posed by microorganisms resistant to conventional antimicrobials underscores the urgent need for novel agents to control infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity and biocompatibility of alpha-silver tungstate (α-Ag2WO4) nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by the ultrasonic method. The NPs were characterized, and their antimicrobial activity was assessed against Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli using the broth microdilution method, determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericida

Dual L/T calcium channel blocker exerts both antihypertensive and renoprotective effects in L-NAME-induced hypertension model.

Renal hypertension, a common form of secondary hypertension, results from kidney disease. It arises due to the narrowing of arteries connected to the kidneys, often caused by atherosclerosis. Over time, this condition can lead to kidney failure. Therapeutics for kidney protection are currently limited, prompting continual search for new renoprotective agents in the context of hypertension. Dual blockage of both L-type and T-type calcium channels has shown promise in the treatment of hypertension when compared to selective calcium channel blockers. Toddaculin has been proven to be a potent inhi

Pathological Role of High Sugar in Mitochondrial Respiratory Chain Defect-Augmented Mitochondrial Stress.

According to many research groups, high glucose induces the overproduction of superoxide anions, with reactive oxygen species (ROS) generally being considered the link between high glucose levels and the toxicity seen at cellular levels. Respiratory complex anomalies can lead to the production of ROS. Calcium [Ca2+] at physiological levels serves as a second messenger in many physiological functions. Accordingly, mitochondrial calcium [Ca2+]m overload leads to ROS production, which can be lethal to the mitochondria through various mechanisms. F1F0-ATPase (ATP synthase or complex V) is the enzy

In-Vitro Study of Indium (III) Sulfate-Containing Medium on the Viability and Adhesion Behaviors of Human Dermal Fibroblast on Engineered Surfaces.

Tissues and organs consist of cells organized in specified patterns that support their function, as exemplified by tissues such as skin, muscle, and cornea. It is, therefore, important to understand how external cues, such as engineered surfaces or chemical contaminants, can influence the organization and morphology of cells. In this work, we studied the impact of indium sulfate on human dermal fibroblast (GM5565) viability, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), morphology, and alignment behavior on tantalum/silicon oxide parallel line/trench surface structures.
