Anthropometry of the face in lateral facial dysplasia: the unilateral form.

The skull, face and ears of 46 patients with the unilateral form of lateral facial dysplasia were examined at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, using anthropometric methods for the purpose of contributing to the morphology of this syndrome. The classical picture of unilateral facial asymmetry with microtia was found in 13 cases (28.3%). The study showed bilaterally defective mandibular arc measurements in 28 per cent of the cases. The facial damage was associated in 15 per cent with ears normal in size but defective in location, level, and shape. The anthropometric examination revealed

From Silicosis to Systemic Sclerosis: Erasmus Syndrome in a Young Galamseyer-Case Report.

Erasmus syndrome is an uncommon condition marked by the onset of systemic sclerosis (SSc) due to extended exposure to silica. In this case, we highlight the significant health risks associated with silica exposure in artisanal mining (galamsey), leading to the development of Erasmus syndrome. We present the case of a 33-year-old male artisanal miner with a 14-year work history who presented with a 2-year history of recurrent cough, difficulty breathing, and fever. He later developed hypopigmentation and skin thickening on his face, neck, torso, and knees, along with a productive cough and low-

Free radial forearm flap lip reconstruction: a clinical series and case reports of technical refinements.

Lip reconstruction is best suited to the dictum of replacement of like tissue with like. The use of the remaining lip in the use of the lip reconstruction becomes more difficult as the size of the defect increases. The use of local tissue for subtotal lower lip loss problems like microstomia and facial and commissure distortion are real risks. The use of free tissue transfer becomes especially an attractive option when in addition to the lip there is associated loss of other aesthetic units and/or mandibular bone loss. The potential value of local perioral tissue is more likely to maintain dyn

Cutaneous laser surgery for secondary burn reconstruction: Cost benefit analysis.

Thermal disease presents a major burden to individual patient morbidity, healthcare cost as well as to over all economy. Burns also also represent a significant per-patient utlilisation of finite healthcare resources. Secondary complications in these patients, such as multiple drug resistant organisms, may have a devastating effect. Laser surgery has recently come of age as an optimal tool in the secondary reconstruction of burn injury, that is able to simultaneously address significant sheet scar tightness, hypertrophic, atrophic, and keloid complications, pruritus, microstomia, ectropion, sk

Transoral Cross-Lip (Abbé-Estlander) Flap as a Viable and Effective Reconstructive Option in Middle Lower Lip Defect Reconstruction.

The Abbé-Estlander flap surgery is a cross-lip procedure that is valuable in repairing a defect on the lower lip using a full-thickness flap, consisting of the skin, muscle and mucosa, from the upper lip. As usefulness and practicality of the flap in reconstruction of lower lip surgical defects in Asian ethnicity have not been documented, the authors present a case of successful lower lip reconstruction with a staged, Abbé-Estlander lip switching flap with commissuroplasty as an illustrative example. A 71-year-old male has presented with an ulcerating lip nodule in the middle one third of the

Relationship in hypoplasia between the masticatory muscles and the craniofacial skeleton in hemifacial microsomia, as determined by 3-D CT imaging.

The purpose of this study, based on three-dimensional (3-D) computed tomographic (CT) reconstructions, was to evaluate the relation between underdevelopment of masticatory muscles and hypoplasia of the craniofacial skeleton in hemifacial microsomia (HFM). In 25 patients with HFM and 19 control patients the volumes of the masseter, the temporal, and the medial-pterygoid and lateral-pterygoid muscles were measured on the basis of CT scans, using three-dimensional segmentation and voxel addition. The size and shape of the craniofacial structures were classified, using three-dimensional imaging ba

Novel heterozygous mutation in MYH3 causes contractures, pterygia, and spondylocarpostarsal fusion syndrome 1: A case report.

RATIONALE: Contractures, pterygia, and spondylocarpotarsal fusion syndrome (CPSFS) comprises a group of extremely rare genetic disorders characterized by congenital craniofacial and musculoskeletal abnormalities. With fewer than 500 cases reported globally, this scarcity contributes to limited clinical recognition, frequent diagnostic delays or errors, and missed opportunities for timely intervention. We present this case to enhance awareness of CPSFS and report a novel pathogenic variant in MYH3 (previously undocumented in the literature) that broadens the known mutational spectrum of MYH3 an

Mandibular distraction osteogenesis with multidirectional extraoral distraction device in hemifacial microsomia patients: three-dimensional treatment planning, prediction tracings, and case outcomes.

Distraction osteogenesis of the craniofacial skeleton with the use of several different types of distraction devices (i.e., extraoral, intraoral, unidirectional, multidirectional, and customized) have been documented. However, the details of treatment planning and the method of predicting the distraction of the mandible in patients with hemifacial microsomia have not been published previously. This paper presents a technique for (1) three-dimensional treatment planning for mandibular distraction, (2) three-dimensional prediction tracings with conventional radiographs (panoramic, lateral, and p

Original sagittal split osteotomy revisited for mandibular distraction.

INTRODUCTION: A malformed mandible and an abnormally positioned mandibular foramen make it difficult to plan an ideal osteotomy line for mandibular distraction. In addition, there have been reports of such complications as nonunion, damage and stretch injury of the inferior alveolar nerve and tooth germ damage when conventional osteotomy or corticotomy are used for mandibular distraction. The authors utilized the original sagittal split ramus osteotomy for mandibular distraction.
