[NiFe]-hydrogenases catalyze the reversible conversion of molecular hydrogen into protons end electrons. This reaction takes place at a NiFe(CN)2 (CO) cofactor located in the large subunit of the bipartite hydrogenase module. The corresponding apo-protein carries usually a C-terminal extension that is cleaved off by a specific endopeptidase as soon as the cofactor insertion has been accomplished by the maturation machinery. This process triggers complex formation with the small, electron-transferring subunit of the hydrogenase module, revealing catalytically active enzyme. The role of the C-te

Stool samples collected from the districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Hooghly and Calcutta in West Bengal were examined for hookworm and associated parasites. It was found that maximum prevalence of hookworm was in Hooghly district (24.8%). N. americanus appeared to be more prevalent species in all the districts studied. The load ofhookworm infection appeared to be mostly in the mild range. Ascaris lumbricoides appeared to the most common accompanying infection. In the affected population, the degree of anaemia was mostly mild.

A cDNA encoding a surface-associated antigen was cloned from an Ancylostoma caninum infective larvae (L(3)) cDNA library by immunoscreening with pooled human immune sera. The sera were obtained from individuals living in an Ancylostoma duodenale hookworm-endemic region of China, who had light intensity infections and high antibody titers against A. caninum L(3). Ancylostoma caninum surface-associated antigen-1 is encoded by an 843 bp mRNA with a predicted open reading frame of 162 amino acids. Recombinant Ancylostoma caninum surface-associated antigen-1 was expressed in Escherichia coli and us

Blood and fecal samples and lifestyle interviews were obtained in August 1996 from two Cofán villages in Ecuador, Dureno and Zabalo, that are experiencing different degrees of acculturation. Dureno's territory has been divided by roads and encroached upon by oil companies and colonists, whereas Zabalo, 95 km downriver from Dureno, is located in the Cuyabeno Fauna Reserve, a protected area. This study examines how culture change affects the prevalence of parasitic infections. Fecal samples were examined for helminth eggs to determine helminthiasis in each village sample. Seventy-four samples we

A sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (s-ELISA) is developed for detecting circulatory antigens in individuals infected with Wuchereria bancrofti in an endemic area using antibody (Ig) against excretory-secretory-metabolic antigens of the microfilariae raised in rabbit (anti-mf-ESM) and labelled with alkaline phosphatase (ESM-Ig-conjugate). An optical density reading of a sample greater than 0.075 (after subtracting the background) was taken as positive in the s-ELISA. Hookworm disease is one of the most widely distributed parasitic infections in the world. It is endemic in Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. It is caused by the nematode species Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus. Adult worms typically inhabit the small intestine and are rarely found in the stomach. Hookworm infestation may be asymptomatic or present with chronic anemia due to occult gastrointestinal blood loss, depending on the worm burden. Overt upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is an exceedingly rare presentation. This case describes an 87-year-old patient with recurrent epi

Hookworm infections are classified as the most impactful of the human soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections, causing a disease burden of ∼4 million disability-adjusted life years, with a global prevalence of 406-480 million infections. Until a decade ago, epidemiological surveys largely assumed Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale as the relevant human hookworm species implicated as contributing to iron-deficiency anemia. This assumption was based on the indistinguishable morphology of the Ancylostoma spp. eggs in stool and the absence of awareness of a third zoonotic hookworm spe

To determine the role of soils in dissemination of enteric protozoan cysts and intestinal eggs and/or larvae of helminths, a study was carried out on muddy soils around springs and wells of six districts in Yaounde, Cameroon from February to July 2015. Protozoan cysts and helminth eggs and larvae were observed microscopically after concentration by standard scientific methods. Flagellated enteric protozoa cysts were detected at an average density of 245 ± 145 cysts/L for Giardia intestinalis, 308 ±190 cysts/L for Chilomastix mesnili, 105 ± 106 cysts/L for Enteromonas hominis and 96 ± 118 cysts

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) has traditionally relied on stool microscopy, which has a number of critical deficiencies. Molecular diagnostics are powerful tools to identify closely related species, but the requirement for costly equipment makes their implementation difficult in low-resource or field settings. Rapid, sensitive and cost-effective diagnostic tools are crucial for accurate estimation of STH infection intensity in MDA programmes in which the goal is to reduce morbidity following repeated rounds of chemotherapy.
RESULTS: In this study, colourimetric is

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence and intensity and examine the risk factors of soil transmitted helminth (STH; i.e., roundworm [Ascaris lumbricoides], hookworms [Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus], and whipworm [Trichuris trichiura]) infections in Nepal.
METHODS: Five hundred and ninety-four adults (256 men and 338 women) were selected via convenience sampling from five communities in Nepal. The Kato-Katz method was used to assess the prevalence and intensity of STH infection in this population.
RESULTS: Prevalence of STH infection ranged from 3.

A survey on intestinal helminths in school children was conducted in Haiti in 2002. This first nationwide study involving the entire country was stratified by department according to urban and rural zones using the cluster method. Focusing on elementary school children (n=5792; age range 3 to 20 years), it involved 26 urban and 49 rural schools randomly selected. Stools were preserved in formalin and examined by the Ritchie technique. Thirty-four per cent of stools (1981/5792) tested positive for intestinal helminths with the following parasites identified: Ascaris lumbricoides (27.3%), Trichu

Necator americanus is a nematode hookworm of the family Ancylostomatidae, subfamily Necatorinae. This nematode parasite, which is distinguished by two chitinous cutting plates in the buccal cavity and fused male copulatory spicules, is the causative agent of necatoriasis, a hookworm disease prevalent in the Americas as well as in the tropical regions of Africa, southern Asia, and Polynesia. The adult parasites attached to the villi of the small intestines will suck blood causing abdominal discomfort, diarrhea and cramps, anorexia, wight loss, and in advanced disease, hypochromic microcytic ane

A randomized, placebo-controlled trial of the efficacy of pyrantel (single dose 12.5 mg/kg bodyweight), mebendazole (single 500 mg dose) and albendazole (single 400 mg dose) in the treatment of hookworm infections (Necator americanus) was carried out in January 1998 in the Southern Region of Mali, West Africa, during the period of Ramadan (Islamic fast). Statistical analysis of the pre-intervention faecal egg counts showed that there was a significant pre-treatment chance bias, despite randomization of subjects into treatment groups, arising from the main effect of sex (heavier infections amon
