Differences in quality-of-life dimensions of Adult Strabismus Quality of Life and Amblyopia & Strabismus Questionnaires.

PURPOSE: The Adult Strabismus Quality of Life Questionnaire (AS-20) and the Amblyopia & Strabismus Questionnaire (A&SQ) both measure health-related quality of life in strabismus patients. We evaluated to what extent these instruments cover similar domains by identifying the underlying quality-of-life factors of the combined questionnaires. METHODS: Participants were adults from a historic cohort with available orthoptic childhood data documenting strabismus and/or amblyopia. They had previously completed the A&SQ and were now asked to complete the AS-20. Factor analysis was performed on the c

The Mallett Fixation Disparity Test: influence of test instructions and relationship with symptoms.

Fixation disparity is a minute ocular misalignment under conditions of binocular single vision and is typically detected in primary eye care practices in the UK using the Mallett Unit Fixation Disparity Test. This instrument creates natural viewing conditions, when the patient's binocular system is fused using both central and peripheral fusion locks. This allows the examiner to determine the minimum prism power that eliminates the fixation disparity: the associated phoria or aligning prism. The spherical power that eliminates the fixation disparity, the aligning sphere, can also be determined

Is inferior oblique botulinum toxin injection an effective surgical simulator prior to inferior oblique myectomy? A 30-year retrospective review.

PurposeBotulinum toxin A (BTX) injected into the inferior oblique muscle temporarily simulates the post-operative effect of an inferior oblique myectomy (IOM). This can aid in surgical planning, especially given the irreversible nature of IOM. This study evaluates the efficacy of BTX as a pre-operative simulator and compares its effects to those of IOM. To our knowledge, this is the largest reported series of patients undergoing pre-operative BTX simulations, prior to IOM. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on all patients receiving inferior oblique BTX between 1 January 1994 and 1

Vertical rectus muscle transposition and botulinum toxin for complete sixth nerve palsy.

BACKGROUND: Effective surgical treatment of complete unrecovered sixth nerve palsy must include the transfer of abducting power to the temporal aspect of the globe with release of medial rectus contracture nasally. We describe our experience in the treatment of five such patients who underwent full vertical rectus transposition combined with botulinum toxin chemodenervation of the ipsilateral medial rectus muscle. METHODS: The five patients all had primarily unilateral complete unrecovered sixth nerve palsy. They all underwent a complete preoperative and postoperative eye examination and an o

Surgical and Non-surgical Interventions for Intermittent Exotropia: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Intermittent exotropia is one of the most common forms of childhood-onset strabismus, characterized by an outward deviation of the eye that occurs intermittently. Treatment can be surgical, non-surgical, or a combination of both. Non-surgical treatments include occlusion therapy, the use of minus lenses to stimulate convergence, and orthoptic therapy consisting of fusion exercises. Surgery is recommended to normalize binocular function when the patient experiences an increased frequency of strabismus. Given the lack of a universal gold-standard treatment, the decision whether to perform surger

Psychosocial interventions for improving quality of life outcomes in adults undergoing strabismus surgery.

BACKGROUND: Strabismus, also known as squint, can have a debilitating effect on a person's self-esteem, quality of life and mood, as well as increase their feelings of social anxiety and avoidance behaviour. Strabismus surgery can improve both the alignment of a person's eyes and, in appropriate cases, relieve symptoms such as double vision. However, evidence indicates that not all patients experience a meaningful improvement in their quality of life postsurgery. Pre-surgical psychosocial interventions have been found to improve patient reported outcomes in other long-term conditions. OBJECTI
