Transcranial direct current stimulation accelerates recovery of function, induces neurogenesis and recruits oligodendrocyte precursors in a rat model of stroke.

BACKGROUND: Clinical data suggest that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may be used to facilitate rehabilitation after stroke. However, data are inconsistent and the neurobiological mechanisms underlying tDCS remain poorly explored, impeding its implementation into clinical routine. In the healthy rat brain, tDCS affects neural stem cells (NSC) and microglia. We here investigated whether tDCS applied after stroke also beneficially affects these cells, which are known to be involved in regeneration and repair. METHODS: Focal cerebral ischemia was induced in rats by transient occl

The Predictive Value of Motor-Evoked Potentials and the Silent Period on Patient Outcome after Acute Cerebral Infarction.

BACKGROUND: The predictive value of neurophysiologic assessment on patients' outcome after acute cerebral infarction is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) and the silent period (SP) on clinical outcome. METHODS: A total of 202 patients with acute cerebral infarction were prospectively recruited. MEP and SP were recorded from the abductor pollicis brevis of the affected side within 10 days after stroke onset. Patient outcome was measured as the dependency rate. RESULTS: Cortical MEP was induced in 78 patients wher

Altered Resting-State Brain Activity and Connectivity in Depressed Parkinson's Disease.

Depressive symptoms are common in Parkinson's disease (PD), but the neurophysiological mechanisms of depression in PD are poorly understood. The current study attempted to examine disrupted spontaneous local brain activities and functional connectivities that underlie the depression in PD. We recruited a total of 20 depressed PD patients (DPD), 40 non-depressed PD patients (NDPD) and 43 matched healthy controls (HC). All the subjects underwent neuropsychological tests and resting-state fMRI scanning. The between-group differences in the amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) of BOLD si

Quantitative sensory testing of persistent pain after video-assisted thoracic surgery lobectomy.

BACKGROUND: Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy may potentially reduce the risk of post-thoracotomy pain syndrome (PTPS). However, it may still carry a risk of intraoperative nerve damage and thereby development of PTPS. Thus, our aim was to present a detailed long-term neurophysiological characterization of PTPS after VATS. METHODS: Quantitative sensory testing, using thermal and mechanical stimuli, was performed in 13 PTPS patients and 35 pain-free patients recruited 33 months after VATS lobectomy. RESULTS: When comparing the operated side with the control side in PTPS patient

Subcutaneous Dextrose Injection Above Muscle Insertions of 4/5 Muscles Restores 5/5 Power in Patients With Distant Cerebrovascular Accidents, Multiple Sclerosis, or Radiculopathy: Five Case Reports.

In 2011, a patient with dense distal sensory loss from diabetic neuropathy and 4/5 ankle dorsiflexion power was treated with subcutaneous injection of D5W in the region of the interdigital nerves. Upon injection completion and coming to stand, the patient remarked, "I can feel the floor and move my toes more." Great toe and ankle dorsiflexion could not be overcome by manual testing after injection. Further empirical observations by three authors trialing the method (KCM, BM, KDR) have suggested frequent gains from 4/5 strength (active movement against gravity and resistance) to 5/5 strength (n

Railway drivers' physiological responses to typical hazardous scenarios: differences between professional drivers and student drivers.

Unexpected object intrusions on railways present significant safety hazards that can lead to accidents, injuries, and operational disruptions. Railway drivers serve as the critical final line of defense in accident prevention, it is very necessary to study railway drivers' physiological responses to unexpected object intrusions. Existing studies primarily addresses behavioral responses, with few considering drivers' physiological cognition responses. This study recruited both professional railway drivers and student participants to investigate drivers' physiological responses to different haza

Alpha-band fronto-limbic hyperconnectivity in adolescents with major depression and suicidal ideation.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) are at high risk for suicide, but the neurophysiological correlates of suicidal ideation remain unclear. Resting-state EEG functional connectivity offers a promising approach to investigating brain network alterations associated with suicide risk. METHODS: We recruited first-episode, treatment-naïve adolescents with MDD with suicidal ideation (SI-MDD, n = 30), without suicidal ideation (NSI-MDD, n = 38), and healthy controls (HC, n = 33). Resting-state EEG was used to construct source-level functional connectivity networks based on t

Neurodevelopmental Vulnerability in Alzheimer's Disease and Frontotemporal Dementia.

BACKGROUND: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) may influence the course of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). However, prior studies have focused on specific pairs of NDDs and variants of AD/FTD. Adopting a dimensional approach to NDDs and considering the heterogeneity of AD/FTD, we investigated the association between a neurodevelopmental vulnerability (DV) and the clinical presentation and age at onset of AD/FTD. METHODS: We prospectively and consecutively recruited 84 AD/FTD participants and 41 matched controls. AD/FTD participants were classified into typical (am

Effect of Physical Exercise on Esports Performance in First-Person Shooter Gamers: A Six-Week Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Esports has gained recognition as an official sport by multiple countries and organizations, featuring in international events like the Asian Games. Despite its growing prominence as a competitive sport, research on esports performance remains limited. Recent studies suggest that physical exercise, particularly high-intensity interval training (HIIT), can enhance cognitive functions and gaming performance. However, these studies have primarily focused on immediate or warm-up effects, leaving a gap in understanding the longer-term impact of such training interventions on esports per

Effects of Acute Lateral Ankle Sprain on Spinal Reflex Excitability and Time-to-Boundary Postural Control in Single-Leg Stance.

Background/Objectives: Acute lateral ankle sprain (ALAS) affects balance, often assessed by changes in traditional center of pressure (COP) parameters. Spatiotemporal measures of COP and time-to-boundary (TTB) analysis may offer improved sensitivity in detecting postural deviations associated with ALAS. However, the neurophysiological mechanism underlying these changes remains unknown. This study aimed to explore the effects of ALAS on spinal reflex excitability in the fibularis longus (FL) during single-leg balance and TTB parameters following ALAS. Methods: Fourteen participants with and wit
